Gun Turn-In Follow Up

A reader asks a question:
  • SCC,
You missed one really huge problem with this gun turnin.

What occurs when a gun is ballistically tested and it was used in a homicide or aggravated battery?

How does this affect the chain of evidence?

What protocols are in place to trace the weapon back to the source of origin or to the offender?

What is the timeframe to test 6,700 weapons?

What if a weapon is destroyed prior to a criminal trial and the defense asserts their right to independent ballistic testing?
Actually, we don't think we missed this one. We think we addressed it at the gun turn-in last year, but maybe we saw it in the comment sections - kind of like this one. Anyone from E&RPS want to address this? Or one of our Range readers? Are they going to attempt to trace origins? Are they going to do test fires on every functional weapon? Are they going to return stolen guns to rightful owners if stolen from outside of Chicago?

We already know that they're going to melt down the $18,000 museum pieces.

They won't do shit with them because it would cost the CITY money instead of someone's free gift card!

If they accepted guns from outside Chicago and Illinois even with ballistic testing completed I don't believe they could be traced back to the crime.

THE CITY TOLD ALL THE PEOPLE "NO QUESTIONS ASKED" NOW WHAT FINGER PRINT CHECK ALL THE GUNS? ARE THEY GOING TO MELT DOWN THE COLLECTOR GUNS? "YES MR. WIZARD THEY SURELY WILL" WHO IS TAKING WHAT HOME?

Yeah, they are going to test fire 6700 weapons and then compare each and every casing and bullet to each and every firing pin/chamber/barrel/fingerprint file. It is logistically and logically ridiculous to even suggest this, let alone "talk" about it on such a (I do mean this) provocative and thoughtful blog such as this. SCC, I give you a mulligan for posting such a laughable topic and by laughable I mean a notion that is currently so fiscally and personnel-wise impossible that one would have to be a donkey to discuss such a matter.

So I guess that if one wishes to rid themselves of a gun used in multiple homicides and get rearded with a $100 gift card the gun turn in is a great venue.

What is going to happend when an offender is on trial for homicide and the state asks him what he did with the gun? Defendant replies I turned it in to the City of Chicago for a $100 gift card. Subsequent investigation then reveals that the gun was in fact turned in and destroyed?

I'm sure one of "Dana's girls" can shed some light on this protocol. Just remember to contact them after 0700 and prior to noon which is when they all leave for the day.

I was interviewing a kid a couple of months ago. He committed a murder and was telling us about another murder that a friend of his did. He told us that the gun was turned in to St Sabina's last year. I think he said he got gym shoes for the gun.

I KNOW ITS NOT THE DICK CHECKING THE BACKGROUND ON THE GUNS.

WHEN YOU INVENTORY SOMETHING A SGT HAS TO MAPPROVE IT. WERE SGT'S AT THE CHURCH. LET SAY IM TAKING GUN IN AND I BRING A CRAPPY REVOLVER THAT DOESNT WORK. A CITIZEN BRINGS IN A LOVELY GLOCK. I GIVE THE CITIZEN THE COUPON TURN IN MY CRAP GUN AND KEEP THE GLOCK.

TELL ME IT CANT HAPPEN.

getting a gun cleared at the gun desk can be such an excruciating pain. imagine having that many guns cleared and ballistically tested, no chance.

Looks like some of those questions were very embarassing to the City of Chicago. I have never seen the city's shills react with such passion, in an attempt to nullify those potentially damaging questions.

One of the reasons crime labs everywhere keep a big inventory of all kinds of guns is that when only a barrel is recovered they can put it together with one of their pieces and test fire it.

Well I can tell you that is not true. Dana works late and makes sure all of his girls are there with him. I wonder what they do after 1700 hrs. when the building is empty. I forgot, 35th is empty after 1500 hrs. Call any unit!

On that topic, how can any of you house mouse jagoffs say anything about just his unit. Call any unit, especially Charlie Williams and Superintendent Cline's. WTF

I tried to be one of Dana's girls and I would have loved to be there day in and day out, with folks walking past snickering, pointing, looking over my shoulders, talking shit on SCC. Did you ever consider the fact that everyone at 35th has to swipe in and out everyday? Everyone watches that unit like a hawk, so be for real. I personally love walking past when I am at 35th, because all of the women I see working or visiting that office makes woody stand at attention. Hot hot hot

Dana at least has some good taste, can you imagine what the Office of the Superintendent would look like under Ron Hubberman?
