An Interesting Comment

What could they be looking for?
  • Can someone explain why IAD is sending plain clothes officers to 3 different districts just to walk around and observe officers. Two IAD officers that I went to the academy with were in 011 last wednesday and thursday and were just walking around and sat outside in the court yard and then walked the parking garage. An officer approached one of them and he said they were just waiting to talk to a judge about a warrant but that was bullshit because I asked br43 and br42 and they said nobody talked to the judges. So what are they doing? This past monday I was in a southside district working special and low and behold there are the same two IAD rats walking around and I heard the girl tell the desk she was from Eqiupment and supply and they are looking to see what we needed. TOTAL B.S. This is a WARNING to all districts be on the lookout for a m/4 about 5'9, 170 lbs, short black hair and wears a blue tooth, and has tatoos on both 4arms. and the female is a f/1 5'4, maybe 110 lbs, short hair and a high pitch annoying laugh. They are up to something so be aware.
Bueller? Bueller?

OPS is dangerous just because they are stupid and incompetent. IAD is dangerous because not only are they stupid and incompetent, but they are also treacherous. Once a rat, always a rat!! If you disagree just look to one day watch captain and her little sergeant in 005. They must have no conscience.

Paranoia will destroy ya....

Great story, but again, more alarmist BS. Nice post none the less.

Anyone who has ever worked in IAD over the years will get a good laugh out of this. The author gives far more credit than is deserved to IAD.

Here's a tip: IAD is completely buried in CR's, handling over 30-40 at a time per person! Do you really think they are out there looking for MORE work? ha ha ha

If a story like this is the only thing keeping some of you honest, that's pretty sad!

making sure cars still had sirens and spares, accounts for all equipment. I believe there not IAD but from the Inspectors unit. There p/os who are assigned to auditing and control?

IAD cannot break the law to entrap you. So if you have a broken down handgun, in a locked case, in a trunk. Or oregeno or sawdust in baggies, or something that doesn't smell or feel right. Something that you never seen before or imagined criminals doing, then its IAD.
Usually IAD is alerted after an offender you locked up calls IAD to try to get you jammed up or fired.
I couldn't imagine them mopeing around in districts, but anything is possible.

Fired cop now behind the 8-ball
CHARGED | Allegedly hurled billiards ball through window

September 18, 2007
BY FRANK MAIN Crime Reporter/fmain@suntimes.com
A former Chicago cop fired in March for insulting a woman he struck with a car now faces charges for allegedly throwing a billiards ball through an insurance office's window and shoplifting at a drugstore.
Sigmund Naszke Jr., 42, was arrested Wednesday for both alleged crimes.

Early on Sept. 6, he allegedly threw the ball through a $3,500 plate-glass window at the State Farm office in the 1600 block of North Milwaukee. Naszke, who was in a dispute with the insurer over a claim, was captured on a security camera, police said. He is charged with felony criminal damage to property.

On Aug. 27, Naszke was caught shoplifting in the Walgreens at 2440 W. North, where he assaulted a store employee and a guard, police said. He was charged with two counts of battery and retail theft, all misdemeanors.

The Police Board fired Naszke in March for allegedly driving his BMW onto a sidewalk in the 400 block of East Superior and striking a woman. Naszke, who was off duty, allegedly told the woman, "Your fat ass needs to see Jenny Craig" and "I'll bet you don't have insurance."

Police Board records show he served a one-day suspension in 2003.

AND THIS SURPRISES YOU HOW? Hey, I don't need IAD to be f--ked with, I can just sit through another adversarial roll call [your choice in door or out door].

You know, I once had a Watch Commander REYNOLDS, a lot of guys didn't understand him, thinking him a bit of a soft-ball. But, one thing he did at roll calls, besides giving you relative info that might keep you safe or working better, was he had a question of the day. Sometimes having to do with General Orders, but often nothing related to the pending 8 hour watch. He was entertaining and informative. Even the old timers working the wagon [and I mean the long retired cigar chompers] took an active interest. The point is, he was a police manager that kept it interesting, light and sent the police out the door to serve the citizens in as upbeat a mood as possible. Sure miss the positive atitude in a smart Boss, if not the actual face.

A Sgt. on 3rd watch VSEP often ends his roll calls with the "joke of the day". Same deal, sends POs out the door on a little more light hearted note than might have otherwise existed. Better for the citizens, the department and the officers.
Sadly, he is a rarity among supervisors that I have come accross lately.

Anybody care to share a story about a Boss they know that holds a non-demoralizing meeting with the ranch hands?

Come-on, lets have at least one positive or entertaining comment before the next bunch of crap lands on our heads...

*******

Hope the ASA's deduct from the value of that window because it was used and not a new window. You see, the ASA's will not approve ANY felony theft or damage unless the items were BRAND NEW with no depreciation and believe me you will have to jump through hoops to get charges approved because they will use any excuse not to approve. I know it sounds petty, but it has happened to me. Saw 2 idiots stealin a ladder from a workers truck. Ladder's value was at least $700-$1000, the real tall fiberglass enforced ladders that sbc and COMed use. Well the ASA tells us......"sorry, charges denied, ladder was used not new. Dont u know that officer?! How can I possibly approve charges on a depreciated value ladder?" Try to get charges on a damaged police car, you'll want to strangle them on the phone after talkin with them.

TO: 9/24/2007 01:38:00 AM

Although lawyers are hated on this site, I will give you some free advice anyway.

First, you are not required to bring your action in the county where the child resides. Since you are a party to the suite, there is jurisdiction in the county in which you live. Thus, you can file here in Cook County. That being said, it's a matter of who files first. If she files a child support action in Dupage County, you can bet that court will retain jurisdiction. So, if there if she hasn't already gone to court on this matter, I would suggest that you file first.

Second, If you haven't already acknowledged paternity (ie. signed the birth cirtificate)you will have to file an action to establish paternity. This will involve her being served with papers and, more likely than not, a forced DNA test if she refuses to acknowledge you as the father.

Third, Once paternity is established you will be able to obtain visitiation on a regular basis. Also, the court should order her to meet you at a neuteral half-way point for the dropoff and pickup. This should help with the distance. Unfortunately, you will also have to start paying her 20% of your pre-tax gross (minus reasonable living expenses) as child support). Then again, I would advise that you do so anyway right away, as it both looks good to the court that you are doing so and prevents you from accruing any back child support. (If you are giving her money now, do it via check and write (Child Support - Sep 2007) or the appropriate month in the memo line). This provides a record of payment. It's very important that you DO NOT give her cash!!!!

Fourth and lastly, if she is a piece of crap mother (junkie, criminal, mental, suicidal, etc. . .) you may be able to win full custody of the child. To do this you would have to show that it's in the child's best interest to have you as the custodial parent. This is a tough threshold to meet, but has and can be done depending on the specific of the family situaiton.

Good luck! And as far as attorneys go, I will give you this little bit of information. . . Don't think that just because a lawyer advertises on radio and television in regard to a specific area of practice that they are the be all and end all of attorneys in that field. I won't mention names, but one attorney specializing in "father's rights" is terrible! In fact, you probably won't even see him in court. Rather, he will send a fresh out of law school associate to run up your bill.

- A lawyer who knows

Interesting about this posting. My old partner caught them following him home a few times from work. The guy was driving a crown vic with regular plates and a video camera attached to the dash. He followed my buddy down culdesacs, dead ends and down one way streets. I had the same thing happen to me about 6 weeks ago, I saw them behind my house parked and idling. I asked them what they wanted and the f/1 in a suit said they were investigating dirty cops and then mentioned my name. I asked her if she was the police and she said yes. I asked her what district and she said "oh I'm at ops". Not cool. My old partner is a stand up guy and I'm ok too. WTF is this gestapo tactic supposed to accomplish? I left him a message at the 019 desk to please call me and the prick doesn't even have the common courtesy of a call back,,even if to say fuck you.

Off topic, but a quick story to show professional courtesy still exists in Chicago!

This morning around 9:30am I woke to my door buzzer going off. It was P.O. M (female, 024)asking if I was so and so and if I was the police. She said "Im sorry, but there is street cleaning and asked if I can move my car" I said "I am so sorry, I will be right down"

I had forgotten that there was street cleaning on the side that I had parked, as I didnt move my car at all yesterday. This P.O. bless her soul saw my FOP sticker, took the time to run my plate and ring my bell giving me the opportunity to move my car instead of just writing the ticket that she was supposed to issue. Having been the recipient of a few tickets in the past, I greatly appreciated the courtesy that this officer showed me, going above and beyond anything that she had to do.

I just wanted to say thanks to this officer and I also hope this sends a message to other P.O's as to how important it is that we take care of each other, cause there is nobody else out that really gives a damn about us!

Keep professional courtesy alive! One day you may really need it...

Be safe out there!

A grateful P.O.

Here should be our reply,99% of the people on this job are regular schmucks like myself who wake up go to work,do what they're suppose to,get their checks and go home, there is no conspiracy. the other 1% do something stupid like steal or come up with another way to take advantage of their position and eventually get caught...leaving their mugs all over the news next to a police patch that represents us all. Then for the next few weeks the rest of us are bombarded with people asking us what we think of officer Joe Blow and his situation, to which we roll our eyes and think I don't know nor do I really care, but answer with "wow he was so wrong". So for all the new citizens just joining us here is what the 99% of us regular schmucks think of the future "scandals", I don't know what I think of it, I'm not shocked by it because I've seen people who have been dismembered by other humanbeings so nothing really suprises me anymore,No I don't know anything about it because if 1% is doing something wrong they're not going to tell the rest of us, and as exciting as it seems this job is nothing like the shield,or NYPD blue. When it comes down to it its like an office job where people hate you and shoot at you while telling you how they could do it better. Sorry but after the last few months i needed to blow a little steam.Be safe.

O.P.S.= OFFICE OF POLITICAL STANDARDS

I came on the job shortly after OPS was started and it always was the Office of Political Standards. Through the years I have seen coppers get railroaded and I have seen some that should do a novena on their knees for getting a break in an investigation.

"OPS is dangerous just because they are stupid and incompetent."

Not necessarily, some are good and they are usually from police families. Some are downright liars. There is one I will call a liar to his face in front of witnesses and tell him to do something about it as I can prove it. The only time I ever got a sustained case is when this guy lied about me; when he was influenced by someone politically connected outside of the department.

I have sat on many Complaint Review Panels over the years. I have often been amazed at some of the investigations. The three panel members read them before the cases are heard. The investigations go on for page after page, and often lead you to believe that this case should be EXONERATED or never taken in the first place. We read on expecting some smoking gun and then there is nothing. Nothing but, the allegations are SUSTAINED!

Many times we sent the cases back for further investigation. But it often made me think, if I read this case, why didn't the exempts on the Chain of Command form think the same thing. The answer is the exempts didn't read anything but the Summary, the fact that the investigation did not support the conclusion means nothing.

Now if the exempts don't read the investigation, how can you expect the little man on the 5th floor to read it now that he has the final say. It will be the calls from the reverends and the aldermen that make a case now. Like I said, O.P.S.= OFFICE OF POLITICAL STANDARDS

Stay Safe, and out of trouble

I've had occasion to work with many of the folks in IAD in relation to my responsibilities. The vast majority of these people have a case load that I wouldn't want. They take turns being on call nights and weekends for the countless stupidity that coppers get themselves into. Some of the stuff we do is so stupid and embarrasing that you couldn't make it up. You know I'm right because regular people wouldn't believe the bizarre stuff most of you see every day. You could video tape it and they still wouldn't believe it. Yes they have some perks, but they do a distasteful job that needs doing. Many of you wouldn't do it. I've met two that I didn't like. One they investigated and fired themselves and the other retired. Most of the time they will help more than hinder but either the allegation is so horrible that we want them to take action or the copper is to cocky to take direction. Go ahead and flame away, but they do a necessary job and are very much like any other copper.

People who bully are likely to come from home situations in which there is little warmth and positive adult attention and in which discipline is inconsistent and periodically emotionally and physically aggressive. These young people may not develop adequate empathy for others and may not make cause effect connections between their own actions and the consequences of these actions. Instead of re-examining their own behavior when they get in trouble for hurting others, they may blame others in authority or the other person they hurt.

I bet you thought you were clever after you wrote that, huh. You have the same hackneyed thing to say everytime you post something on this blog. We get it, 025 is the best and everyone else sucks. Good for you. Here's a gold star sticker for your under armor shirt and a cookie. It's OK to admit that it's not all your fault for being such an a-hole. Did you have a sh*tty family life and you have to take it out on others to make yourself feel better? Is this why you took this job? Please get help, I feel sorry for you. I don't work in 016 either.

I was near the front desk last week in 011 and the 2 IAD officers spent a lot of time looking at the sheets and then talking with people in the Commanders office. A short time later a CAPS boss had a closed door meeting with them and then they walked the parking garage and then the parking lot. They were here for a few hours and tried striking up conversation with P.O.'s and the female had no problem with that, a lot of P.O's were talking(flirting) with her. I hope the P.O's didnt say anything stupid. Keep an eye out for these two or any others out there. They drove a lite blue crown vic when they left.

I already know that she has full custody of him because we were never married.anyone know a good lawyer? or any advice would be appreciated.Perhaps even Seiser may be of some help
---------------------------
Start the petition asap for visitation. I am an attorney. Just because you are not married does not mean she has full custody. Custody has not been established yet. You will have to pay child support and they will take that from your salary. the good thing is, you don't have to pay her maintenance/alimony. She will likely get residential custody and you both should have joint decision making with all matters from religion, school, sports ect. Plus you will be able to declare the child on your taxes, and will likely pay the medical insurance.

If there is a next time,

A) Go out with a video camera
rolling and ask the questions.
Then put it on youtube. No expectation of privacy.

B) Call 911 and report a suspicious auto. Make sure to let 911 know you are the off duty police. If it is a male and female add that it may be a prostitution event.

I have had about 30 Cr#'s over the years. I never had one sustained. I bitched about OPS and IAD. I felt like I was a criminal when I went down to make a statement at OPS on the three occasions when I had to go there in person. I never had any problems with IAD. I never heard anybody really complain about IAD..just about OPS. I knew there were some shady characters on the job. Some were ghetto mutts and others were busted for being crack heads. The bottom line is that the majority of us will never have a problem with IAD unless we were to do something stupid off duty or something criminal on duty. We will continue to get stupid complaints from OPS..but that is to be expected if you are dealing with shitheads and yuppies. IAD is a necessary unit. It shouldn't be staffed with those who left patrol after 2 years. IAD should be staffed with those officers who know what kind of BS complaints officers can be the subject of. IAD is necessary to weed out the criminals that this department lets in with its lower employment standards.

To the asshat who claimed he/she was a lawyer and was giving out "free advice" to the copper inquirying about child support, you are certainly not a lawyer, or at least not a family law attorney because you don't have a clue about how child support is figured.
Minimum guidelines support is 20% of the non-custodial parents "net after-tax income from all sources". That includes overtime, tax refunds, the extra checks, retro, etc. Court doesn't even look at your living expenses but will deduct prior orders of support actually paid, interest on student loans, and medical insurance premiums for the child, and medical bills for the preservation of life currently paid. The NCP may also be required to pay half of day care expenses if Mom is working, and half of all medical bills for the child in addition to covering the cost of the medical premiums. Mom is also entitled to 20% of any secondary employment you may have.

Copper can also file in Cook County if Mom hasn't filed elsewhere, but should be prepared for her to transfer venue to the county in which she lives under a forum non-conveniens move. She won't necessarily have to deliver child to a more convenient location for visitaiton pickup or delivery unless she moves after visitation order is already in place.

If the child was born after Aug. 96, parentage may have already been established by the signing of a Parentage Acknowledgement at the hospital. W/O the PA, father's name cannot be put on birth certificate.

You sound like someone who was represented by Jeff Leving's Office, and got screwed and now think you know everything. NOT!

Was given a heads up by our WC that there will be checks done in the field soon, if not already. Undercover people will be getting locked up and they are checking on how everything is done from the moment you arrive on scene and until the person goes through lockup. In theroy you should have no idea this is happening

You must be new. Its called an integretity check, They been doing those forvever.

If ordered to answer questions you should:
• Ask for a representative to be present before you answer any questions.
• Ask for an attorney if you have been involved in a shooting, a car accident, a physical fight, if an arrestee is injured or dead, or any other “critical incident.”
• Ask the person asking the questions if you are being ordered to answer.
• Ask the person asking the questions if you can be disciplined for failing to
answer.
• If your jurisdiction has an officers’ “Bill of Rights,” insist your rights be observed.
• If your Bill of Rights requires interviews to be tape recorded, insist on the recording device and ask the above questions while the device is recording.
• If the interviewer refuses to observe your rights, before you begin answering any questions, state loudly enough for anyone nearby to hear (preferably in
front of your representative) that you are answering the questions because you have been ordered to do so with the understanding that you will be terminated for insubordination for refusing to answer. Write this on top of any report you are ordered to submit. If you are ordered to remove it from the report, save a copy of the report with the statement and comply with the order.
• If you are not ordered to answer questions, say nothing until your attorney is present.
• If you are advised of your Miranda warnings, ask for an attorney and say nothing further.

Quote was taken from this months FOP grand lodge mailing. It had a great article called "know your rights during questioning: The implied Garrity Rule. Every FOP member receives this, but I guess I was the only one who reads it.

Yea, I guess your right, coppers in 016 have forgotten how to chase the one bag dope arrest who is holding his baggie pants up with one hand while running from the "Real Police." The coppers in 016, although not all of them are as sharp as tacks are still up thier trying to catch a real criminal (Burglar, Robber, Auto theft) from making you Mr Super 025 copper or your family the next victim. You are incorrect in your assumption that I am not a lawyer, but that's ok.

While I may have been somewhat general in my child support allowance figure, for the most part I'm correct. Otherwise, what would be the point of having to complete a 13.3.1 disclosure? Under your formula, all that would be necessary to figure out the statutory amount would be a copy of the Respondent's last year's tax return.

In regard to forum non-conveniens, I doubt the petition would be granted. As you know, it must be shown that maintenance of the suit in the forum would be a gross inconvenience to the moving party. I highly doubt the woman in the case at hand would be able to successfully argue that is grossly inconvenient to drive her ass from Dupage to Cook County when they are right next door. It's an annoyance at best.

In closing, my posting was not meant to cover every possible issue that could be raised. It was simply meant to provide the guy with a little info and hopefully get him to contact a competent attorney. Is that so bad?

And no, I've never used Jeff Leving's office. I've helped several people who've been soaked by him in the past, and can honestly say that the guy is a fine example of all that is wrong with lawyers.

It's not enough that every shit head has ops on their speed dial?

9/24/2007 12:37:00 PM

You forgot to start this post with "Once upon a time..."

Those of us with ANY knowledge at all of how these units work are stunned that anyone could even think to try and pass this off as even remotely truthful. From start to end, just nonsense.

So, what exactly ARE you worried about?

I should have qualified my original statement. One man I know in IAD is a GENTLEMAN named Lt Nalway (spelling). If he came knocking, I would feel much better about an investigation. Not only is he fair but of good moral fiber. And the immediate statment about what I'm worried about? The district I'm in thoroughly hates the WHITE POLICE, fact not opinion. I've never caught as many CR's as I have here. It's a little old after a while you realize that it comes with the job. And no, this was not nonsense.

9/25/2007 01:09:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I personally have had no trouble with IAD. I have had several very serious CR#s over the years investigated by IAD, including two confidentials, an alleged murder, allegations of corruption, and a few off duty complaints. Most were exonerated or not sustained. The sustained CRs. were ususally based on some directive or procedure I failed to follow; hey give me a day to five days over firing, indictments, or thirty days anytime.

I even had one CR that was obtained by the Superintendent- Martin. Half way through the interview, the IAD Sergeant was helping me.

The way to deal with IAD is to be polite and professional. Do not be adversarial, combative, or a know it all smart ass. Treat them the same way you want to be treated. Do not be stupid or try to lie your way through. I don't know or I don't remember are better and acceptable answers than some bald faced lie or dumb justification.

Do not lie to your lawyer. If you do, you have two liars. If there is something to hide do not even tell the lawyer about it. What he does not know cannot come back and bite you on the ass.

If you must file a report, just answer the questions in as few words as possible. Yes I did or no I did not are acceptable answers. The more you write to justfy yourself, the deeper the hole you will dig; unless you have documented evidence to back up your statement.

Provide documentation. Get as much as you can; from Dept. Computers, reports, and court documents. If there is an off duty complaint, try to get as much information as you can before you write the report. Include the documentation in the report; in effect create your own paper trail to your own benefit. (I provided schematics of an alarm system, photographs, and building plans to prove my case once).

If you get called down to give a statement, remember, they will not ask a question that they do not already have an answer to. Think before you open up the pie hole and answer in a way that will prevent a follow up question.

IAD is so busy that they just want to push the paper through the system. On the other hand, if there are serious complaints of a criminal nature or may result in a lawsuit or media event, they will go all out to conduct a proper investigation.

Remember, you are not there- in person or on paper to defend your self. You are not doing anything to justify your conduct. You are only there to answer an allegation and or specific questions. The more specific and short your answers are, the better off you will be.

9/25/2007 08:29:00 AM

I consider myself a fair and reasonable person. I've been the police a long time and have my share of awards and war stories. And I've worked in IAD. I was never afraid to go any goddamn place or handle any goddamn job that came my way. And for that matter, I still feel that way. And I'll admit it, the reason I went there was for a normal life, weekends with days. I never worked a ‘normal' shift in my life, and if you can get the chance, do it.

Whoever you are Mr/Ms 08:29:00, you talk out of your ass. You sound like the general public that says all us cops are donut munching do-nothings who think we're big shit cuz we can carry a gun. You lump IAD in some bullshit world of your imagination without knowing shit. I'm a rat, and you're OK? Ask some of the people you police what they think of YOU!

There have been asshat IAD investigators, just like there has been asshat coppers. Like it or not, IAD is a necessity in a department our size. This may come to a shock to you, but some of our brethren in blue are thieves, dope dealers, gang bangers and the like. They have no more business being the police than Gator Bradley does.

I never expected any love for being in IAD, just some reasonable thinking. The same kind of reasonable thinking I used when investigating the cases I had. If you could sit in IAD for one week and see the kind of shit some coppers pull, you'd faint.

IAD knows bullshit when they see it, but an allegation has to be investigated, bullshit or not. And I myself always gave the copper every benefit I could. I never hurt a copper. If they were hurt, they did it themselves by doing stupid shit.

All of the beefs I've ever gotten against me (plenty enough) were bullshit. Most beefs are. People don't like the police and they'll lie on us to get even. But any copper worth his salt knows he/she stepped over the line at least some of the time in their careers and by the grace of God, no one beefed on them, or no one saw it. Just do your job the way you were taught, don't get so full of the star you carry that you think you can walk on water and you'll be able to retire from this job with a pension and your self respect.
