Rough Waters for CTA?
Former exempt patrol officer Ron Huberman's CTA is headed for the wood chipper:
- There's big trouble at the state capitol Friday for a plan that would stop bus and train fares from going up by increasing the sales tax. [...], even supporters concede they may not have the votes needed to pass it in time.
As many as 100,000 commuters may lose their rides if the CTA implements huge cutbacks its now planning for Sept. 16, not to mention cutbacks in the suburban Pace bus system.
But the only plan that's currently on the table to avert that dark day for mass transit is in big trouble in Springfield. Majority Democrats need Republican help to pass their plan, which includes a sales tax increase that Gov. Rod Blagojevich threatens to veto and GOP leaders are refusing. - But there will be 300 fewer buses on the street come rush hour Monday morning Sept. 17, say CTA officials, if the General Assembly fails to act by then to provide new revenues for the system.
"If we don't make these cuts by September 16, we will simply not be in a position to meet payroll by the end of the year," said CTA President Ron Huberman.
Sometimes, the only way to fix a broken system is to let the whole thing crash and burn and start over.
No word on who's going to be pushing buses and pulling trains when the CTA runs out of money.

Public transportation sucks in Chicago with the exception of Metra. The CTA is horrible,dirty,loud,mismanaged and seldom on time.
Let the CTA collapse,privatize it.
Keep Metra,it works and it does fly.
How is it possible that Metra is always on time,clean,efficient and well run and the CTA is totally the opposite? They are both quasi-public transportation entities.

The only solution for this is run it like a business and not a pension plan for all the clout connected people. get rid of all those political connection inside it.

Why should taxpayers who don't use public transportation subsidze those who do? Heres a thought. Charge more for the people who use public transportation. The CTA has long been known as a dumping ground for political hacks. Case in point. 2 high ranking Fire chiefs forced to resign at age 63 wind up with 6 figure salaries at the CTA. Why? What did Nolan(11th ward) and Donellan(19th ward) bring to the CTA at age 63 that a new young hire could have done for half the salary? A great news story for a reporter with the balls to actually report.

Apparently, Mayor Daley saw through the hype and discovered that Huberman wasn't all he promoted himself to be. Thus, he was put in charge of the unfixable CTA and set up for eventual failure.
You will see Huberman resign in the very near future and leave city service altogether. He will not be coming back to the CPD as a Patrolman or a Deputy. Bank on it!

Good thank God. 3/4 of the buses that ride around only have a couple of people on them. Do you want to see CTA waste in action? Go to Foster/Sheridan see all the empty corrigated buses just wandering around!
Maybe the City could use some buses for CPD? Convert rapid cars to rapid buses. Have them race around the district in a bus.

All this CTA stuff is coming to light/realization, because he's put it out there. Mayor? Very unhappy. But Ron's smart, not going to take the fall for pre-existing problems caused by our goofy mayor and clout jackasses who have been put in charge of CTA prior. And our Governor? It's time to stop the act between you and our Mayor like you guys never got along, only problem is, you two have been in Kahootz this whole time. Now the Mayor needs that favor to bail out the CTA. Now what Governor?
