LA Mayhem

Anyone think CPD could handle this any better?
  • A drive-by attack followed by a wild shootout between gang members and police shut down dozens of blocks of Northeast Los Angeles for nearly six hours Thursday afternoon, stranding thousands of residents, keeping students locked in their classrooms and leaving two people dead.
  • The violence began around noon when a 37-year-old man police described as a bystander was shot more than a dozen times by suspected gang members as he held the hand of a 2-year-old girl. He later died. The toddler, apparently picked up by a passerby and carried to safety, was not wounded. As the gunmen drove off, witnesses told police, several pedestrians who apparently knew the victim opened fire on the car.
  • Minutes later, police attempted to stop suspects driving in a white Nissan sedan about 10 blocks away. Three men jumped out of the car, and at least two of them fired weapons at officers.

A man wielding an AK-47 rifle was killed by police as they returned fire, authorities said.
But hey, we don't need long guns anywhere but 10 minutes away and we certainly don't need to qualify but once a year in a 30-round course.

Don't worry. That will never happen here. When it does though, the public will be OUTRAGED watching the funeral. Those poor little children, clutching the hands of their mother as she tries to put on a brave front (think Jackie Kennedy) and shakily, clumsily climbs the steps of St. or First or Holy (you know what I mean) Oceans of Blue with Da Mare standing next to the widow supporting her elbow, patting little Joeys head with a grimace on his face(for the cameras)As if to say I'm gonna me some bad guys. next day-Press Conference-"We will give YOU what you want! We will NOT LEAVE OUR CITIZENS UNPROTECTED!!!" not until people die, and by people, I mean cops that make for a very nice media event, will CPD ever be properly armed. Five innocent women were assassanated not 10 miles from the city limits, yet you don't find any new weaponry right? Not even a shotgun. We'll see.

Speaking of which: I got an email from the NRA today how daley wants to push his antigun agenda on the whole state(no clips over 10rds, serial#ed ammo etc).
God help us if daley takes the white house; he should be worrying
about what we'll do if he pushes us too far!
They'll keep pushing till they understand that some of us are willing to get bloody........

Supt Weis,

1)Let PO's use Area Ranges at their convenience. Right now you have to argue with some clout hack to practice and you are most likely not going to be able to. Each range, one PO, 3 watches. Simple.

2)Make PO's qualify two or three times a year. We, as a whole, have shitty marksmanship.

3) Enough of the stationary target shit. How about moving targets, simunitions, etc? Time for CPD to get out of the Stoneage.

4) Let PO's who want to buy and qualify with long guns on their own time and dime do so. It won't cost the city a penny and it will make all of the citizens safer. Think the Olympics alone.

Roe Conn was even laughing that Fat Phil's interview may have been a contributing factor in Fat Phil being fired. I believe this was in reference to Cline stating that he wished he could beat Tony Abbate with a baseball bat to teach him a lesson.

The moral of the story is that Superintendent Jody Weis is intelligent and savy. J-Fed is not seeking spurious fame or celebrity.

Superintendent Weis is a consumate professional leader striving to make the Chicago Police Department the best PD in the nation.

MINNEAPOLIS — A woman who authorities say is in the country illegally and using an alias was charged Friday with four counts of criminal vehicular homicide and two lesser charges in a school bus crash that killed four children.

A woman who identified herself as Alianiss Nunez Morales, 23, of Minneota, was driving a van that failed to stop at a stop sign Tuesday before hitting a bus carrying 28 students from Lakeview School, Lyon County Attorney Richard Maes said. The accident happened near the small town of Cottonwood, in southwestern Minnesota.

Morales was also charged with a stop sign violation and for driving without a valid license, Maes said.

The others that have been born and raised here and benefitted from all the "programs and services" are not allowed to buy guns here. I don't know if you know this but it is illegal to buy guns here. And with all the free counseling given by the Revs and spiritual advisors that abound here in our fair city....this could never happen here. The people who get shot here are shot by people who come from places that have no gun control.

When the guns are banned the worlds problems will be over. The gang bangers will not have them and good citizens can go outside and kids can play in the park. The third world countries and the middle east will follow are example and lay down there guns.

Yeah right, just the opposite will happen.

We need more gun laws.

My former partner is on SWAT and pushes a sort car around. He regularly tells me that it would be better if more P.O.'s could be allowed to carry their own AR's. The city of course would never allow it, and if they did, would require officers to purchase their own and pass outside courses, at their expense$$$$. That'll never happen as AR ownership by L.E. is forbidden in this Shity! And whats more, the SORT cars carrying SWAT officers and their AR's barely run!
After seing the ealier post about SWAT getting notified on pagers, yesterday he tells me they have new Nextel phones available to them but they are all locked up in Cmmd. Green's office and he won't release them ! What kinda JAG**f would prevent his SWAT team from a medium for communication and quick notification. It's a criminal act that he would have to answer to, should a major incident occur and SWAT can't get rolling quickly !

In two years, CPD will have firearms at the station to be signed in and out like radios. Officers will be fired if they are found to have firearms in their home or on their person while they are off duty.

In five years, CPD officers will not sign out firearms, but instead will be issued the new Soft Tazer, which only gives the threat of an electrical shock. If faced with an offender holding a firearm, CPD officers will be ordered to retreat.

In eight years, all CPD officers will be dressed as such:

Actually, if you're asking our opinion I think LA seems to be better at handle more 'outrageous' situations if you will. With that said however, I think we'd be more than capable of handling a situation such as this. However, it looked like the SWAT team (from the video in the above link) was going into houses and such looking for the suspects. I think CPD would be too afraid of "violating" rights in looking for the suspects.

LAPD is a real department. Their training from what i hear is second to none. I know they have their problems, but advanced training is not one of them. CPD will never have a shot at improving training or modeling anything close to the LAPD because the 5th floor doesnt want to spend the money.

Once again the "Long Gun" argument.....You have Sergeants who will not carry Tasers!! and you want "Long Guns"?....017th Dist officers get on your Sergeants asses and MAKE them carry the Taser as required per GO..then talk about "Long Guns"..as far as qualifications go...I think we should be qualifying 2 times per year...

2/23/2008 12:28:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

God help us if that happens here. Say what you want about LA but they are one of the most highly trained Departments in the country. If they have a problem handling a situation like that it would be total mayhem here. We train once a year at a bogus range qualification that isnt even graded.

LAPD is a far more advanced police department than CPD. Better trainng, better equipment, and better officers. Sure they probably have some riff raff that get on the department, but nothing like the crap we have working here. No way could CPD organize such a precise perimeter, and properly secure a crime scene like LAPD did in this incident. Our department is a joke people. Until the mob, I mean democratic machine, stops running this city, and we get qualified high ranking supervisors (and we hired QUALIFIED police officer in the first place) we will always be the laughing stock of the nation.

long guns in beat cars-- half the people on the watch can't even handle a handgun. the thought of an mp5 or shotgun in some of my fellow officers hands is scary. several months ago the intelligence unit took out some thugs on kedzie avenue who were loaded for bear going to do a hit. if a beat car would have stopped these guys by accident we would have been going to some funerals. long guns would be good but only after an extensive training in which you can prove you can handle the weapons.

Hey, long gun hero, you must be a rookie,or very close to it. We used to carry shot guns in the cars until we were getting them stolen out of squad cars responding to the jobs in the projects, you wouldn't remember that. How would you secure this long gun office, when you are away from your squad car? Perhaps, have a strap attached to it and carry it in to a hospital to do paper on a DOA? The family of the DOA would welcome you with open arms,I'm sure of it. The ranges conduct semi-annual weapons qualifications by a matrix, primary weapons, auxiliary weapons, shot gun. taser, asp and they go to multiple training classes per year. No I am not a range instructor but I know you were raised in the burbs PPO.... They should drop everything when you feel like shooting a few hundred rounds...LOL

OFF TOPIC I took the FTO test today and just wanted to mention 2 things. 1- it was graded on site by a scantron machine. I understand only about 250 people took it but why is it that all of the other promotional exams cannot be graded in same fashion? I undersatnd the machine at the academy is from 1970 and only does like 5 tests per 15 min but most of these schools where we take the dick and sgt tests have REAL machines. Im sure we could find a way to have this done, and 95-100% of coppers would be willing to wait the extra hr or so to actually have their tests go through a machine in front of them and see their REAL score. I think MANY more would beieve in the system if they actually knew their score before leaving the test site. Does anyone else find it odd that we usually wait more than 6 months for scantron tests to be scored? So for that i give the people running the FTO test credit. As for the machine at the academy, that thing needs to be updated ASAP! 2nd - I sat near an individual that has 6 yrs on the job and spent a total of 12 months on the street(obviously the required time as PPO). This person was talking about how he/she USED to teach at the academy but for the past 2-3 yrs has been assigned to an ADS office at 35th. First how in the hell can someone with 2-3 yrs be teaching ANYTHING at the academy and why is this person allowed to take an FTO test? He/She has 1 yr experience ON THE STREET and 5 yrs kissing ass. What the fuck? Do we want this teaching new officers? Oh and then of course I noticed the name of a SGT and PO also assigned to the academy who I am familiar with. I would say between the 2 of them they have a total of 9 yrs experience. I believe the sgt has 5-6 yrs total on the job (and a good guy actually, to be honest) and the PO(cocky ass) has about 4 maybe. Im sure these arent the only 2 at the academy with very little time, just the ones I am familiar with. Again how and why are these people assigned to the academy? What are they going to tell the recruits about? The war stories they have from kissing ass and NEVER being the police? How they worked on the south side or west side and did sooo much police work? Its time to take a look at the entire department and when wondering why so many are fucking up look at the clout babies being put in cushy spots and how THEY are responsible for training the new guys and girls. VERY VERY SCARY!

long guns in beat cars-- half the people on the watch can't even handle a handgun. the thought of an mp5 or shotgun in some of my fellow officers hands is scary. several months ago the intelligence unit took out some thugs on kedzie avenue who were loaded for bear going to do a hit. if a beat car would have stopped these guys by accident we would have been going to some funerals. long guns would be good but only after an extensive training in which you can prove you can handle the weapons.

Officers who cannot handle weapons and learn should be fired...period.If your not a professional but a Irish welfare recipient you shouldnt be on the job.

Someone in an earlier comment stated J-Fed was going to turn us into the best PD in the country.

Yeah my ass I will make sure to pull up to a State, or Surburban copper in my nice 1998 unmarked Ford Crown Victoria, with 160,000 miles, and it's one strobe light in the turn signal that still works as emergency equipment, and the 90's model Microslate Pdt. Then i will "wow look we are the best don't you want top notch equipment like this"?
Then they will laugh and show me their 2008 Dodge Charger, Chevy Tahoe, Crown Vic, or Chevy Impala, with emergency lights and a working siren, a computer that not only is from the last decade but can run a plate faster than CPD's usual 5-8 minutes. Then they will pop the trunk and show me the M-4 Carbine and Binelli Shotgun. Then they will like they do now "you guys are a joke"
that is all

I know some P.O's and SGT's in tru that are good guys. Please if you know who this was hit him with his metal report holder/clipboard take his radio until he has enough time on the job to take a promotional exam and explain what an emergency is.

I believe the sgt has 5-6 yrs total on the job (and a good guy actually, to be honest) and the PO(cocky ass) has about 4 maybe. Im sure these arent the only 2 at the academy with very little time....

What amazes me is that most suburbs like Lincolnshire, have AR-15's in their vehicles as well as shotguns. They are locked in the trunk but they are there if a PO should need them. Is the crime rate that bad in these suburbs compared to Chicago? No its that the wuss mayor is spending tax dollars on frivolous law suits and is afraid of the public.
You want safety? Protect yourself and your family, get home safe every night, and screw the rest of em. If need be, God forbid, send a shitbird to hell, better judged by 12 than carried by 6. Many will know you did the right thing.

Yes we should have long guns, you lock them into the car like every other municipality.

LAPD is a real department. Their training from what i hear is second to none. I know they have their problems, but advanced training is not one of them. CPD will never have a shot at improving training or modeling anything close to the LAPD because the 5th floor doesnt want to spend the money.

2/23/2008 12:10:00 PM

There are no inservice training at CPD. Every major department has a well organized inservice program except CPD. I attended the in car camera training at academy and was not impressed. Is this the best we can do as a police department? LAPD and many other departments have annual, training for officers on street. CPD has nothing. So sad. And PO's want to carry long guns? Who will train them? Not blaming academy but someone needs to do something.

I would be plenty happy with any of the afore mentioned firearms, after all they are the very arms that helped win WW2.I personally believe the M1 carbine to be the perfect urban firearm. It's basically a 100 yard gun and you would hardly need anything bigger. The M1 carbine is a fine firearm that has the same stopping power as the .357 magnum and with 15 or 30 round magazines you have plenty of firepower.I think you have a good idea there, we should adopt the M1 carbine as our patrol carbine and we can get them pretty cheap from the CMP, thats Civilian Marksmanship Program to all of you NON-GUN NUTS out there.

So your're saying the only protection us Chicago citizens have against a maniac with a Ak-47 is the comfort of knowing the police can PAGE swat team members with weapons of equal size?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Wow.....so 30-60 minutes (and who knows how many deaths & injuries) later we get help?!??!? What a joke. Time to move to the burbs. They at least can carry heavy equipment in cars.Saw a patrol man in the burbs at a gas station last summer fiddlin around in his trunk with a big black case in there. I asked him if it was a shotgun and he smiled back & said "no....something a whole lot better". As creepy as it was to hear him say that, at least they're ensured a quick response in case some idiot with a automatic rifle decides that he wants to test it out on civilians that day. I even remember Skokie police carrying Shotguns in dash brackets a few years back. They were in a lot of cars.
CPD sees all the action and they don't have the weaponry at hand the suburbs have....Something seams a backwards here.

To the TRU suckass (or the blogger hanging ou TRU's Nuts) that claims they got 3 heads for PSMV out of the car they chased for "Dui"...NO, YOU DIDN'T GET 3 HEADS FOR PSMV, you fuckin' 2-year wonder - not even if all three occupants were juveniles (the days of psmv for all juvy occupants are LONG gone). There you go telling on yourself (AGAIN) as to your worthlessness on this job. I can't wait until your "following for a dui, squad" or other ill-conceived statements over the air (and retrievable by slick attorneys) wind up getting you 30-pending or worse. 90% of TRU is worthless coppers whose only glory and "good police work" is due to stumbling upon it in busy districts. And this "good police work" won't mean a fuckin' thing becuase you're too dumb and not the real police to be able to cover your ass on the radio or paper. But if it makes you feel better young hair gel, I'll more than likely buy a ticket to your "10-1" benefit when you get jammed up - I'm caring like that! Interesting post! The #1 weapon sought after and used when the KING
riots turned into full-fledged arson, looting and murder was the M-1 carbine. Alot of those Coppers fought in WW2 & Korea and many had one in their house. The old TaskForce guy I talked told me the hard thing to find, once they got the "shoot to kill" permit was the 30rd clips........

The M-1 carbine for urban use makes a lot more sense than does the AR-15. Less overpenetration and harder hit at realistic urban distances.

Perhaps a better idea would be a 9mm rifle like the Marlin that uses pistol magazines.

Thoughts?.......
