i went to see a concert at U of I in champaign yesterday, went to give the guy the ticket at the door and was met by a student wielding a metal detector. i identified myself and showed my credentials, he promptly stated " and what am i supposed to do with that?" he then proceeded to tell me that i was not allowed to bring in my weapon because it is state land. two U of I police officers were there and were very polite about the whole thing, however they would not let me in the front door with my weapon. i had to find a means of securing it before i would be allowed admitance.
just a thought but WTF??? lets take the guns away from the police now too, yea thats a BRILLIANT fucking idea!!!
This is why we stopped going a lot of places. Concerts. Great America. The list is pretty extensive. Their choice to deny themselves the extra security without paying a dime for it. Our choice to deny them our entertainment dollars. There are still enough venues in town that appreciate the help or have CPD security that will extend courtesy that we don't miss out on too many acts we like to see.
The next big attack in this country is going to be a soft target. It just is. And we don't plan on being anywhere near it if we're off duty.

All universities are weapons free zones. There is no need for weapons on campus anyway. When is the last there was actually a shooting on a college campus anyway?
You got to bring an ankle holster to those events! Certain private property owners also believe they can restrict the police from bringing your weapon into their premises (certain hospitals have told me I couldn't bring my weapon in unless i was on "official business"). I used to get into an argument with them but now I just have it concealed better.
Remember this is the only power some of these simple minded people have in their jobs and they lick their lips to use it, just be smarter than them and you won't have a problem. You aren't in violation of the law just their policy. I'd rather be alive and violate policy then be a victim.

Think thats bad? A few years ago my partner and I responded to a disturbance in a privately-operated mental health facility and upon entry were told we would have to relinquish our weapons before entry into the housing area, per company policy.
Can you imagine telling on-duty, uniformed officers responding to THEIR call for help that we would not be allowed in with our weapons. You can imagine what we told them, and while they attempted to find a supervisor, the distrubance miracuously ended peacefully on its own.
The old Reed Mental health facility on Oak Park Avenue had a similar policy. When you worked the wagon and were transporting a mental there for treatment, you had to give up your gun, per State regulation. Its one thing for a State facility to require this, another thing for a private firm to order it.
We decided that if the disturbance had escalated to the point where someone were in danger of harm, we would have entered with our weapons regardless of their rule. Anyone attempting to prevent our entry would have been arrested for obstruction.

CPD is the best security around, they actually deal with shitheads and use their guns once in a while.

Mental hospital, prisons/jail, courthouses, airports and other places that are allowed by State Law.
No place, no matter if it is a state university or not, can ban a peace officer from lawfully carrying a weapon. Otherwise Walmart or Target or even a residence you are going to on a call could tell you to lock up your weapon before entering.
Secondly, if by law they can make you disarm before entering, THEY must supply a secured locked box for your weapon.
Next time call for a supervisor from the agency/department the venue is at and have that supervisor explain it to the private security officer at the door.

I have been to a few places where they told me I could not bring my weapon.
I took my weapon, and money, elsewhere.
Add Children's Memorial to the list. I went there, in full uniform, to visit my nephew. Security told me to cover my weapon or put it in my car. They would not allow me in the hospital. The reason they told me was that children are afraid of the police, and even more ridiculous the nurses are afraid of the police too. But when the shit hits the fan they will be the first to call 911.

The ticket is a contract, and by using it you agree to the terms.
Usually a catch all phrase like, agree to all policies, is on the ticket. So any policy posted on a wall, such as, no weapons allowed, apply when off-duty, you can be refused entry.

Anyone remember how the lead singer from Pantera was killed???? A guy ran up on stage during the concert and started shooting. It took several minutes for the police to arrive and shoot the guy with a shotgun, killing him right on stage. The singer was killed on the spot. Shootings do happen at concerts, but I dont know the weapons policy of the venue, or how the guy brought the weapons into the concert.
Its my understanding (if wrong, please let me know the statute) that if you are off duty then a venue can deny you entry as they can for pretty much any reason they want. If you were to go in anyway you would obviously not be commiting a UUW, but rather a criminal trespass as you were told you weren't allowed in... I've had it happen to me at House of Blues and several venues being run by JAM security...my solution is to no longer give such events my money.
HR218 gives POs the right to carry their weapon unless it is a place listed in the Bill. Everyone on here keeps bringing up Illinois law, HR218 TRUMPS Illinois law, every time. Its the right of a PO to carry his/her weapon off duty, anywhere in the states.

I have two stories regarding civilians trying to prohibit me from having my weapon.
First, I was at a suburban hospital picking up my wife from a hospital stay. It was winter so I had a heavy jacket on and my hooter in a pancake on my belt. I had my jacket off while helping my wife gather her belonging when MS administrator comes in and goes into hysterics evan after I show her my ID and button. My partner explained that state law supercedes hospital regulations.
The second was at a major concert venue. The first year the rent-a-cop told me I had to enter through the Police/EMS checkpoint half way around the venue. Since then I stuff my snubbie down the front of my jeans and have been frisked several times w/o my armed status being "blown" if you'll excuse the pun.
To the jagoff ridiculing coppers for being armed off-duty GFY. I am not trusting my or my families safety to a 6 dollar a hour security guard. It should not matter to anyone else that I am armed. The only way to find out I am armed is to pull a gun or knife then you will get a .38 facial

I don't know what law you are studying, but nothing trumps federal law. State laws can be more restrictive, but they by no means trump federal law. And your assertion that municipal laws trump federal law almost made me pee myself it was so stupid. Maybe if you read some articles other than from MSM, you would know that Federal agents continue to make Cannabis arrests and seizures to this day in California. Also there are a couple of recent incidents where off duty police (armed) stopped madmen from killing people, or more people. I don't carry off duty because I really expect something to happen, but I am prepared in the eventuality that something does happen. If you are the police, and I hope you aren't, what are you going to do when that situation happens to you off-duty and you don't have your weapon? Just be a sheep.

You're about ad dumb as a stump. They can tell you to leave ...and if you refuse, you can be arrested. Any private place can dissallow an off-duty cop from entering with a weapon. The fact that it was a State university may complicate it, I don't know. But they were not telling you to violate CPD general orders ... they were simply saying you can't come in with your weapon (off-duty). If you were going to sue them on what legal theory would that be? Unconstitutional violation of CPD's general orders? The constitution dissallows the feds from prohibiting ownership of arms. The private citizen, such as yourslef, are allow to prohibit an off-duty, or any person from entering your home with a weapon if you so choose. Private businesses have the same right. For Christ sake, Skokie court judges even exercise this option. I think the poster was just pointing this out as an FYI. You would not be arrested for carrying a weapon. You would be arrested for CTTL. Nobody is saying they would charge you with UUW, and you could have a 'feel good' about that while you sit in some ho-dunk lockup, looking in your wallet for Peter-Francis Geraci's phone#.

A coupla places have tried to give me rhubarb about having a pistol w/ me at their venues. I politely asked the security gaurd for a supervisor ("I'm not trying to be a dick dude but I really need to see your boss about this"). I identified myself and rationaly explained the situation to the supervisor ("Buddy, I'm not here to get loaded or to cause trouble. I'm here to enjoy the show")and was given no further problem after that about my concealed pistol.
To those who claim that off duty CPD carries 50 cal rifles, smokes weed and gets blind drunk at Concerts I pose one question. Do you know where these guys hang out? Is it some kind of club? How can I join? Lay off the caffene and caps key guys.
just tell them, that you appreciate there policy, but you are a sworn officer of the law, and that if they want this weapon, just point you in the direction of the rentaguard who is gonna take it from you. then take a defensive stance and say, "come and get it".

How about being in uniform, going to dom. vio. court and having to lock up your duty weapon prior to going into a courtroom? I could almost agree with that policy in the old bldg on Michigan, way too tiny and overcrowded, but see absolutely no reason why I should be in CPD uniform in the courthouse and weaponless. State law also prohibits anyone other than on-duty police officers from entering horse racing tracks, otb's and casinos while armed.

#1) Most intelligent Police Officers carry a weapon off-duty. I for one counldnt live with myself if my family was injured or killed, and I could have prevented it if I had just carried off-duty. Why do shooting still occur in this city if most guns are illegal.

I do not know about Illinois but in Atlantic City and Vegas only gaming officials are allowed to carry weapons on the gaming floor. Was in Atlantic City with two PO's from Philly and they had ankle holsters and were escorted into security. Nothing happened but they went and put their weapons in the car.

I would not go to Great America without a gun, that place is full of the Criminal Element.

That is correct. Illinois Gaming law does not allow police officers to bring weapons onto the boats unless they are on duty.
I went to a call at a facility with a locked mental ward. I was told I could not enter the locked ward with my weapon, that is where the disturbance originated from.
I informed them that I would not go in without my weapon because carrying a weapon was a condition of my employment and I am not obligated to compromise my own safety.
That was it, I was not allowed in and I left, they can handle it themselves. The only place where I grudgingly store my weapon in a lock box (on duty) is in court and then only because the sheriff or a judge order it.
And even then I always have a small snub-nose .38 in my pocket and also a very sharp folding knife. I'll be goddamned if I am going into court next to those scumbag motherfuckers UNARMED!
I always hide a weapon in court if I am on duty in uniform. Now if I am going into court off duty for something of my own and I have to go through the metal detector, well, then I have to give it up.
Remember, it was a disabled former police officer Hutchie T. Moore who did his best Lazarus imitation and leapt up from his wheelchair, drew his pistol and killed his wife's lawyer and Judge Henry Gentile in Divorce Court back in 1983.
That brought metal detectors to the Daley Center almost overnight.
So there is precedence for disarming the police, the last killing of a judge and lawyer in court here was by a former Chicago cop.

I was at Woodfield Mall couple months back with my kids and ran into a GD that Ive dealt with on the streets.He noticed me before I noticed him.He walked up to me to say hi.I was a little surprised how friendly he was.It bothered me that I didnt see him first but when I'm with my kids enjoying a day out, sometimes I cant help but let my guard down.My kids, who are small, had 20 questions for me about who that guy was.I answered them all and assured my kids everything was fine.I was armed.I,m always armed.I prefer it that way.STAY SAFE.....
