More Laws That Won't Work

  • The NIU tragedy has renewed the gun control debate -- some lawmakers are pushing for tougher laws while gun rights advocates say more rules are not the answer. Mayor Richard M. Daley on Tuesday said he wants to introduce "common sense" procedures to reduce gun violence. He said the city will support the proposals, both in Springfield and in Washington, D.C. "The tragic deaths at Northern Illinois last week again are a fresh reminder," Daley said, of the need for tougher gun laws.
Unfortunately, the gunman at NIU followed every single one of the laws on the books before finally breaking the one that mattered most. And nothing stopped him. As we hear more and more about the run up to this incident, the signs were all there and no one who knew the gunman stepped up to take responsibility for getting him help. Recent articles and interviews are attempting to paint a false portrait of him as a victim and deflect the uncomfortable light shining on his friends and families as ignoring his need for intervention.

Channel 5 also covers.

ah, good thing I didnt drop any money on a prep class for the last Sgts exam... looks like Jody is calling it into question and they may dissolve the list entirely. I think that is an EXCEPTIONAL idea. I mean how coincedental is it the same people with the same names with the same clout in the same secretive study groups have done well time and time again on these tests? Chalk one up to all of us with no clout. Then again, maybe superlative police knowledge and excellent test taking skills just so happen to run in the Cline family. (but then again, if that were true, how could one Cline boy have such great and superior police knowledge he runs the top of detective lists, sergeants lists, gets to narcotics on his own merit, gets to A/4 on his own, gets to Fugitive Apprehension on his own, yet one of the EXACT SAME blood line has such bad police genes that he gets stuck up while more than half in the bag on the el??? hmmmm)

Finally, a promotional system that may work 80% of the time. Now we gotta work on the other 20%... FOP?! I will admit I didnt do so well on the last test. Not because I didnt prepare, but I just didnt score too well. I too have police brass in my gene pool... only with a different agency. So I guess it has to be CPD genes to be that much more intelligent. Ahhh thats it.

But now I have a second chance. Thanks, Jody. JOB WELL DONE!

ps sorry Jack, guess daddys clout wont help you this time around. Hows JISC by the way? hahaha

The reality is the only thing that will curb these incidents is stopping the media's fixation on them. Until the media stops spending weeks talking about the motive of the ex-boyfriend or mal-adjusted classmate etc. and starts simply reporting the fact that a deranged killer did xyz, the incentive to be a mass murderer will go on. Stop turning the killer into a post-mortem star, and the appeal will go too.

What is the real story about poor morale on 3rd watch in 006? I work in 006 on days and have noticed quite a bit of grumbling from a certain pretty boy from 3rd watch working the desk.
Now this young man has serious "juice", so if he is pissed about something, then it really is bad in 006!
I'm also hearing a certain huge Captain is tossing out spars to po's who look at him funny. What REALLY is going on? Maybe I'll stay on my watch and avoid the drama? Time for another beer...

As for Mike shields lets just say this. who wouldn't bitch about being dumped to midnights after transferring and getting on third watch. I know I would and the majority of assholes working for this department would also. So lay off you obviously have a hard on for him over nonesense. Im sure it won't be hard for anyone in 18 to figure out who you are. So why don't you sign your name since you so hell bent on destroying someone else so we all could know who you are ?

2/19/2008 08:25:00 PM

He has nothing to "bitch about" he went to 018 on a phone call and was always on 3rd watch by management! How else can a DC dump someone from 3rd watch to mids if he was not there on senority?

Lesson: If you transfer somwhere on your phone call, do your work to justify it! When you do not do shit, do not complain about it!

Since you apparently arent smart enought to pass a test you agree with taking the list down. But contrary to popular belief there are some people that study and go to the PAY study groups and do well. So how is it fair to them to take the list down. This sends a message that go ahead put long hours in studying, do well on the test and it will all be for nothing because the city wants a new list.

Helpful for who?

Police already have a too high of a suicide rate. Now you want to expose who's taking medication to the state and make their FOID card dependent on the results?

How many cops will go underground and not get mental health treatment?

Not to mention, how defense attorneys could use the information-taking or not taking drugs-to win their court cases when there is a shooting, traffic accident or 'brutality' beef.

HIPPA protects us too.

SCC:

Check out this article from BBC online about planned changes to British immigration policy:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/
politics/7253933.stm

Here's part of the article:

BRITISH CITIZENSHIP TESTS PLANNED
Wednesday, 20 February 2008, 16:11 GMT

Immigrants who want to become British and settle permanently in the UK will need to pass more tests to "prove their worth" to the country under new plans.

Some migrants may also have to pay into a fund towards public services and have a period of "probationary citizenship". Prime Minister Gordon Brown said the UK should expect a "demonstration of commitment" and the process of becoming a citizen should be "more exacting".

Unveiling the proposals, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said future migrants would need to "earn" citizenship. This scraps the current system which allows people to apply for naturalisation on the basis of how long they have lived in the UK. Ms Smith said migrants from outside the European Economic Area would be encouraged to "move on" through a system that leads to citizenship - or choose ultimately to leave the country.

The package of measures includes:

* Raising visa fees for a special "transitional impact" fund
* More English language testing ahead of nationality
* Requirements to prove integration into communities
* Increasing how long it takes to become British

Too novel a concept to be implemented here, though.

Off Topic but quite amusing. In Berkley, CA the city councilman that have denied the police from carrying a taser are now backpedaling after a p.o. shot a broad wielding a knife. Funny part of it is the head of the NAACP had to say about it.

Allen Jackson, the president of the Berkeley branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said he doesn't see Tasers as being an alternative for police.

"Especially since they have proven to be lethal," he said.

Meanwhile, he said the Berkeley branch of the NAACP is calling for a federal investigation to determine whether the civil rights of Gay were violated. In a statement released Monday, the group said a "non-lethal method of apprehension could have been applied" to Gay.

"However, it is apparent that the only thing in the mind of a Berkeley police officer is to kill any African-American that they can," the statement said.

Both Gay and the officer who shot her are African-American.

Saturday's deadly shooting began to unfold about 6:40 p.m. when police were called to the 1700 block of Ward Street following reports of someone breaking windows. Police found a broken window at a residence next door to Gay's but no incident in progress and left.

Called back at 8 p.m., police found Gay on her porch with a knife and proceeded to "challenge her at gunpoint," Kusmiss said. Neighbors said Gay appeared intoxicated and may have been drinking or on prescription medication.

Then, Kusmiss said, Gay's two daughters came outside and Gay waved the knife at them.

So according to this douche if someone is waving a knife we should just use verbal judo, or maybe some pressure points. God forbid we defend ourselves out there.

To bad we have democrats running this state, the below listed law should be adopted here. VOTE REPUBLICIAN!

Castle Doctrine/"Stand Your Ground" Legislation~SB 378 by Senator Jeff Wentworth (R-San Antonio)/Rep. Joe Driver (R-Garland)
This legislation puts the protection of the law where it belongs: with the law abiding, not the law breaking. If a criminal unlawfully enters or intrudes into your home, occupied vehicle, or place of business, you can presume that he is there to cause death or great bodily harm and you may use any manner of force, including deadly force, against him. The bill also explicitly states in law that you have no "duty to retreat" from a criminal attack if you are in any place you have a right to be and you are not engaged in unlawful activity. Last, the proposal would limit the ability of criminals and their families to sue victims for killing or injuring their attackers. This was signed into law by Governor Perry, the first bill signed into law this legislative session! It will go into effect on September 1, 2007.

Just b/c you didn't score high enough don't think that everyone that did "got the answers." I have no clout and no nobody on the job and i put my whole life on hold for the few months before the exams and just lived and breathed those general orders and practice exams. I tried as hard as i possibly could have, and i ended up scoring ok. I have a really good shot at making it, but i need that list to stay up for a while. Do you think it's fair to a person like me for jody to tear that list down? Did you really make an effort like i did? Or did you half ass study and then like to come on here and bitch that everyone else that scored better than you MUST have had the answers? There are a lot of people that i'm sure studied harder than you and you might not like to hear this, but are also smarter. That's just the facts. So next time you come on here spewing your crap about cronyism and blood lines, i ask that you remember there are also a lot of people like me on that list.

Let's make a deal Mayor Munchkin: you give up your armed bodyguards and I'll leave my gun at home when I'm in the City? Deal you fat prick?

That sanctimonious bastard talks out of both sides of his mouth, among other orifices. I'd be happy to be unarmed in the City, too, if I had CPD babysitting me.

And while we are addressing Himself, it's OK for him to question Laski's "personal demons", but when somebody questions his son's sweetheart deal with the City, he gets to choke up and plays the patriot card. Fuck you. Let's not forget, Patrick did not like Westpoint when some other poor, deserving prick undoubtedly got passed over so Richie's boy could get the appointment.

Seems he manages to deflect all personal responsibility by turning on the waterworks. Remember when Patrick bashed some kids head in in Michigan with a bat? Mayor Mumbles turns on the waterworks, gets all choked up and the fucking housemouse media in this City let's it go. You duplicitous fuck. Maybe if Mike Mette cried more, he'd get a better deal.

Go pray as many Ave's as you can stutter through, Richie, for when your judgment day comes, wrought iron fences and greenspace are not going to cut any ice.

Maybe the next time he takes after someon, they cry, talk about their dead son, and we'll see if Napoleon backs off. I doubt it; he'd rather scrootin' everyone else than clean his own fucking house. You fucking bastard.

There were 29,569 firearm related deaths in 2004. This figure includes homicides, suicides, accidental, and police related. This number fluctuates yearly. Yet annually over 40k people die on our roads by means of motor vehicle crashes. I guess over 40k killed yearly is an acceptable body count by the liberals. Remember Richard Speck killed 8 nurses with a knife.

We've banned guns in Chicago and have many laws on the books regulating ownership and use. Has it made a difference? Would conceal and carry stop what happened at NIU? No, I do not think so as he wanted to die, so if someone shot him it would not have mattered. BUT I think crime would change. A criminal would think twice about commiting a crime if he/she thought their victim could possibly be armed. So do we have any stats on cities who do allow conceal and carry and has it made a difference? Would the Wild Wild West come to life? I do agree that passing more laws is not going to prevent what happened at NIU. It was just a move to console us that "something" was being done although ineffective.

Citgo is owned by the country of Venezuela. Its president, Hugo Chavez, has been very vocal about his anti-American views.
Bolingbrook officials say little compensation was given to the company when Venezuela took over Citgo, so Citgo gasoline won't be sold in their town. They say the developer of the

not so sherlock, already put in the first class of the list and will see this list through because of time and expense. What he really should do is examine the merit picks and the amount of merit picks allowed. He should also check where the merits are coming from, esp. the specialized units, which usually, not always, stink of clout and nepotism. If anything, the Lt. exam was one big examscam and should be looked over a second time for true validity. That's the test that should be scrapped.

ah, good thing I didnt drop any money on a prep class for the last Sgts exam... looks like Jody is calling it into question and they may dissolve the list entirely.

I'm sick of having to suffer stupid political hacks for bosses. The Wonderlic multiple choice, fifty-item intelligence test has its world headquarters in north suburban Libertyville.

Would it be asking too much to have this TWELVE MINUTE, standardized test administered to the entire CPD from Supt. Weis on down to the newest PPO with immediate scoring.

Albeit, it is but one factor. However, we must cull the herd.
Don't be surprised if a disproportionate number of the highest scorers come from the ranks of sergeants and below. Conversely, don't be shocked if some exempts test out as imbeciles.

Mathematical probabilty suggests that an estimated 250 members of the CPD would qualify for Mensa (IQ scores at or above the 98th percentile).

This would be a valid and reliable method to identify many of our brightest human resources who are overlooked
due to clout (aka "merit") and rigged "testing".

Back on topic. Why is it that every time a shooting like this occurs, our illustrious mayor blames the NRA? It's not the NRA shooting up innocent people. It's not the NRA committing robberies or shooting up a rival dope spot. It's felons.Well guess what, the NRA is against felons having guns. There's reasonable gun control right there. As for this latest idiot, he lied on the form for the background check which makes him a felon. How come the new First Deputy was not standing with the Mayor and the new Superintendent during the big gun announcement/press conference? What happened to our community/police spokesperson position? I also heard that CAPS is not going to be under the First Deputy's Office anymore since G.E.D. Dana Starks took that job when Cline thought he took all of his power, used it to his advantage and got a big city job for making the Mayor look good. He had no idea that he gave him more power than he even had. Now I hear today that the New Superintendent is taking CAPS and putting it somewhere within the ranks of the department.

Since the NIU incident has become a debate about gun laws, and since SCC has clearly staked out a position, I would like to ask a question or two.

1) If you dial back the "anti gun laws" and make it easier for people to get a pistol - how does that make everyone safer? It is certainly true that certain "elements" in this City seem to be able to get a gun out of the trunk of some a-hole's car willy nilly. Why make it easier on the illegal wep dealer? Why should you be able to buy a pistol at WalMart? at Dominick's? at a Shell Gas Station?

2) Let me start this one by saying, when I see the police with a sidearm - I feel safe. This is because, as far as I know, you Pol-leeses are trained, quite well, in the handling of your sidearm - and presumably hit what you aim at. My neighbor is a shaky drunk - how am I safer if he is rolling, armed and happy? Since we are being topical - I can't imagine any of my college professors handling a pistol in a heated moment - what good would putting a gun in their hand do?

3) Finally, if the argument that being armed (legally or not) makes you safe from violence is true - why is it that so many gangbangers are getting shot? They and their ilk are all strapped - how come no deterrent?

Just thought I would ask - I only ask that if you respond - don't talk to me about Mr. Lott's book.

1. How stupid are you? Nobody suggested selling guns at a gas station. As far as purchasing guns at Walmart or a grocery/general store, that is more than common in most of the USA. You must never make it outside of the corporate city limits, travel abit and absorb some culture you idiot.

2. You are obviously a civilian if you think that your neighbor is incapable of handling a firearm. Anyone can become proficient with a firearm, most sport shooters shoot better than the police and are expert marksman. I am truly glad that you buy into the smoke and mirrors, feeling safe by seeing a policeman,if you only knew what we know. Alcoholism is epidemic within the police and military ranks,FYI.

3. Gangbangers are shot because they live by the adage, live by the sword die by the sword. If you play Russian roulette you will get shot,if you run in front of trains you will get run over. If you carry a gun to rob, kill and injure others you will get the same in return. If you carry a gun to protect yourself and others you will be left in peace. You really are an idiot of the highest order or I apologize,a 5th grader conducting research.

Here is a lesson for the idiot, a gun is a thing. A gun is a piece of cold metal fabricated to expel a projectile. A gun is inanimate and will never do anything by its own accord,it can be left in the same place for a hundred years and will not move or shoot.

In the hands of a violent, evil, immoral and unethical human a gun can cause injury and death. A pack of matches in these same hands is capable of killing thousands of innocent people. When do we ban all packs of matches?

"Just thought I would ask - I only ask that if you respond - don't talk to me about Mr. Lott's book.

2/20/2008 10:55:00 PM"

1. It's not that being armed, with any kind of additional weapon(s) to your hands, arms, legs, feet and, for those so equipped, a hard head, will guarantee your safety, it's that having a greater potential force at hand gives you the option of using that greater force, should you need it to overcome an attack on your person of greater force than you have to respond with.

That's why firearms are called 'equalizers'.

2. Can you imagine yourself "...handling a pistol in a heated moment..."?

Have you pondered the answer to your question of "...what good would putting a gun in their hand do?" by asking the question "...what good would putting a gun in YOUR hand do?"?

Have you thought about this question by considering someone OTHER than your neighbor, the 'shaky drunk' or your 'college professors' or 'the police'?

3. I have confidence that you are intelligent enough to know some of the answers to this question; here are several, by no means all inclusive:

Once again, being armed doesn't ensure or insure anyone's safety, but, an aggressor's being armed does greatly increase YOUR peril, should you encounter said aggressor, and YOUR being armed can greatly increase your ability to reduce your peril or respond to an aggressor's attempt to harm you.

If you had the gift of verbal persuasion, if you were capable of 'talking your way' out of said peril, being armed would not detract from your ability to choose to NOT use deadly force, but being armed would provide you with the ability to use your 'arms', should you need to do so to stay alive.

Have you given much thought to the fact that the word 'gangbangers' is a simple, and, perhaps, somewhat accurate, description of other, individual human beings?

Have you pondered what the daily living experiences of these 'gangbangers' may be?

Their individual, similar and common perspectives?

Their individual, unique and personal perspectives?

The dynamics of their daily lives, their motivations, attitudes and shared 'philosophies' all supply clues as to why, presuming your premise is true, 'gun-totting gangbangers' die in greater numbers proportional to their population.

Why do citizens of countries go to war, and for what reasons?

Why do citizens within the same country kill each other, and for what 'reasons'?

Why do cops bear arms?

Why do some, to many, cops support the citizen's right to keep and bear arms?

Do cops know things, about the realities of life, that leads them to conclude that the citizens, as a whole, would be benefited by not having their rights to keep and bear arms infringed upon?

And, finally, why is it that we seem to place a higher value on 'statistical evidence' over 'anecdotal evidence'?

Interesting that your goofy Liberal Socialist argument leaves out the most important premise. The framers of the constitution structured the 2nd amendment as a final check and balance to stop a government out of control so that citizens could rise up in armed conflict to stop that opressive government. Clearly this is a problem for Liberal Democrats dream of transforming our representative form of Democracy to an elitist Socialist tyranny where Liberals foist their will upon the unarmed masses. Who is the CHICKEN "I'm Skarred" sgt in 019 who beefed on a PO from 011? All over a parking ticket issued by a J/O po. More to it but, can't we all just get along?

2/20/2008 09:26:00 PM

You must be refering to the P.O. that called for a Sgt. after the school called on his rental truck and demanded the ticket be "taken care of" by screaming and yelling at the Sgt. And a wife who later went to the school delivering an unusual comment. That classy P.O.?
Pay the ticket, asshat.

True. Except it would not have been the real unibomber, just some schmuck that confessed to being the unibomber. But, hey, for you, that's probably good enough, eh?

"Interesting that your goofy Liberal Socialist argument leaves out the most important premise. The framers of the constitution structured the 2nd amendment as a final check and balance to stop a government out of control so that citizens could rise up in armed conflict to stop that oppressive government. Clearly this is a problem for Liberal Democrats dream of transforming our representative form of Democracy to an elitist Socialist tyranny where Liberals foist their will upon the unarmed masses. I'm going to the gun store right now for another weapon and writing my check to the NRA. Don't you liberals just hate that?

You might want to re-read my posted comment.

Since it was rather long, I appreciated the owner's of this blog putting it up.

If you do review it, you will, hopefully, find that I support 2nd Amendment Rights, as they are clearly enumerated, and clearly stated as God-Given Rights, NOT as government granted privileges.

Perhaps my omission of the primary reason for the 2nd Amendment's creation was my assumption that, as this blog is owned and operated by individuals employed to enforce the very unconstitutional laws infringing upon the citizens' 2nd Amendment Rights, and is read by many individuals who are similarly employed and whom, I presume, are actively enforcing said laws, that this essential argument against these infringing laws would fall on deaf ears.

To state the obvious, these laws infringing upon the citizens' 2nd Amendment Rights have no weight unless and until they are enforced.

Law Enforcement Officers enforce these laws.

Thus, if you, as a presumed Law Enforcement Officer, don't believe these laws are constitutional, don't enforce them.

Whether you choose to selectively not enforce them or to unilaterally not enforce them is your individual decision to make.

But please don't complain about the very laws that you choose to enforce, as said laws have no power to enforce themselves, those who make said laws are not likely to attempt to personally enforce them, nor are those who prosecute them, nor are those who adjudicate them.

Law Enforcement Officers are the first line of defense the citizens have against unconstitutional non-laws.

Discretion is in the eyes of the enforcers.

A sergeant in 019 allowed a P.O. to yell and scream at him?

I guess things are different in the land of Starbucks.

And, finally, why is it that we seem to place a higher value on 'statistical evidence' over 'anecdotal evidence'?
