20/20 Story Coming

Evidently, J-Fed spoke to a meeting of Watch Commanders last week. And he confirmed that the story that had been circulating in our comment sections a few months back is true. The basics are as follows:
  • ABC's 20/20 bought tickets to a CPD/UIC combined event and filmed it. Alcohol was consumed on site and after the event concluded, more alcohol was consumed at a well known drinking establishment. One or more officers were filmed at the event, at the bar, entering their cars and driving off
  • Calls were made to OEMC and car descriptions were given along with the suspicious behavior observed (and filmed by 20/20). One or more traffic stops were made and no police action was taken after it was found that an officer was operating the car.
Again, we're getting all this third hand (e-mail from someone who may have been at the meeting), but it's close enough to what was in the comments section previously to warrant a "heads up" to everyone out there. The allegedly "intoxicated" behavior isn't what's going to be punished because there isn't any admissible proof of wrongdoing. What's going to be hammered is the lack of police action taken by the responding officers.

"Professional Courtesy" has many meanings. And in this age of squad car cameras, street corner pods, reporter ambushes and cell phone personal cameras, the scope of courtesy that can be extended anymore is narrowing faster than anyone dreamed possible.

Hey, if the officers that pulled these vehicles over did not observe drinking that night by the drivers and did not observe any poor driving behaviors or signs of intoxication, then there is nothing the officer could do to the driver.

Once again,,,a hearty thank you to Tony Abbate and the A4 Gun Team who led the world to believe that we on the CPD are all a bunch of drunken thugs.

Plain and simple, don't drink and drive. If you go out in a group, designate a driver or spend 20 dollars on a cab ride home.

J-Fed is going to stick it to you otherwise. You've been warned.

almost 20 years on the job and have only written 8 501's. i give breaks to everyone. the only time you lose is if you crash and their are injuries. state police did a survey many years ago where they established that one out of every ten drivers on the road on a friday on way home from work had open alcohol in vehicle. 20/20 needs to focus on a societal problem instead of trying to make it a police problem.

Fine. Time to ticket the media trucks, newspaper trucks etc, and time for OUR vice guys to hit the bars that the newsmen frequent. The press provided the match, we'll provide the gasoline. They could have followed lawyers, newsmen, pastors, doctors etc, but decided to follow us. EVERY profession has its fair share of drunks...just ask walter jacobsen....Like its news that coppers drink! And give courtesy! Call THAT news? How bout an expose on Daley's connection to the synidcate? How aobut a little national news on Obama's connection to Rezko, who shook down political donars? How about some national recognition as to how things work around here: Stroger inherits the job from daddy, Lipinski inherits the job from daddy.... the governor wastes our money on daily flights to springfield because he's too good to live in a mansion, city hall has a 6000 dollar shower...crook county has the highest sales tax in the nation, the CPD is prohibited from enforcinng national immigration laws, citizens are prohibited from having a firearm in violation of the 2nd ammendment, city workers are prohibited from living where they chose by a state law that violates rights, mike mette is in the clink due to corruption.....THAT is news.... the best these assclowns can come up with is that cops drink and give each other breaks? Give ME a break! 20/20 should be ashamed that that is the best they can come up with. Hell, who is the producer, Daley himself????

In response to a request by female Muslim students, Harvard University has created women-only workout hours at one of its campus gyms. The decision has angered some students at the Ivy League university.

Since Jan. 28, the Quadrangle Recreational Athletic Center has been open only to women from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays.

The change was prompted by a request from the Harvard College Women's Center, which was approached by six female Muslim students, said Robert Mitchell, communications director of Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

I've said this time and time again on this site. HAMMER THEM!!

Every illegally parked camera truck, every delivery truck that blows a stop sign, everything and I mean everything they do should be liable to the same treatment they give you.

In my day (granted without the ability of being filmed) we had a little problem with Skippy Jacobsen. He found out that life is indeed a two way street. He did not stop completely but he sure was alot fairer with his take on things.

None of them are your friends. If they work for any type of media - "Screw em."

so called "professional courtesy" is just another way that cops manage to alienate the public at large, probably not intentionally.

you can't give a guy a pass because he is your buddy, while simultaneously engaging in numerous revenue stops the rest of the day without the public feeling it is about as hypocritical as you can get.

P.S. By the way Jody, how did YOU let a police officer get arrested for battering police officers and paramedics in a suburb? On your watch Jody? Now you will begin to see that the Superintendent is just a figurehead, and you too will be eventually thrown under the bus by DA Mayor!

I'll tell you guys a quick story that happened many years ago when cell phones were something new.
Driver calls 911 to report a drunk driver. CPD in 016 wagon gets the job, finds the vehicle and takes the driver home. Mr. Citizen on his cell phone call's 911 back to complain, IAD is called and coppers got it stuck up their asses and took five days each.
My point is, these incidents just did not happen after you woke up today. Trust nobody you don't know.
Personally, I don't go looking for anybody in particular to hammer them, however, media or not I'll write 'em. They certainly force you to limit your decision as to who gets a pass and who does not.
By the way, the in-car video camera makes my job so much easier when these goofs want to beef. Finally, we get to turn the table on them.

This original story was not done by 20/20. The guy who did the filming was, until recently, a member of some police abuse commission out east. Got into more thatn one tiff with PD's all over trying to "uncover the truth". The video was linked to said organization's website until their powers that be decided to take it off and then terminate the individual. Their website states that he is no longer affiliated with them. Shortly after he is given the boot, 20/20 gets a hold of the tape.

Just remembered, the guy's name is Gregory A. Slate (Age 24) of Hyattsville, MD

Holy Binged Drinkers Batman!!!

Stick to shots of Gentlemen Jack. Ain’t no law against drinking at home. Ain’t no law against having a drink as many members of the media enjoy by going to bars too? Tell all the politicians to stop selling liquor licenses to bar owners in this country. They called it prohibition in the early 1900's. Hell some of our best customers are members of the media just ask Walter Jacobson about his thoughts on this subject. If you setup a camera outside any bar’s parking lot or main entrance you will film many patrons going inside (maybe drinking) and coming out (maybe drunk and lucky). You have to ask the question how did the media know who is a police officer and who isn’t? Where the officers on duty, in uniform? Or off duty and wearing civilian clothes? Did the media record any conversations (if secretly, it is illegal in Illinois without a Judges’ order) at any time? Did the media buy on/off duty police officer any drinks? Did any member of the media make, serve or measure the alcohol content of each drink given to each officer (if known) in order to determine scientifically if the accused where legally drunk? Did the media hire an expert to state his opinion on this subject? Did the media make the anonymous calls to 911? Did any member of the media step forward at the scene of the traffic stop to communicate what they saw directly to the officers and proclaim themselves a witness? Did the media request a supervisor when they saw a motorist get a pass? Did the motorist appear to be drunk to the officers, was their speech slurred, eyes reds and blood shot, and unable to drive? Did the motorist commit a traffic violation? What probable cause did the media provide so that a police officer could establish justification that a call to 911 wasn’t an alleged anonymous prank call? Many people drink (thousands) at large sporting events, Bears, Black Hawks, Bulls, Cubs, Heat, Sox at these games. Do you want the police to conduct roadside checks outside of those events too? Hold up traffic for hours until people can leave? How about all those media types driving home after a game they just covered? The police could have supervisors out there to arrest police officers who had a few beers too. Lieutenants to arrest sergeants and so on?

Can the video recording alone convict any of those accused in court. Hell no. Will any accused get arrest and charged. Hell no. Will any administrative actions be taken Hell Ya!!! And every accused member should fight the complaint. I would. And I bet you win! Might take two years. Sue the media for violating your rights by making audio and video recordings of you, if not in public areas. Better yet sue them for defamation of character. They can’t prove your were drunk.
Face it! This story is just another cheap shot at the police. Jacobson attack the police every chance he got after he’d got DUI. I am still going have a drink so long as it’s legal. Fuck anyone who says I can’t. If I get elected mayor I am getting fuckin stone drunk! And I will call J-Fed on his cell phone for a ride home and he better answer the call.

But he's probably bullet proof due to having Alderman Carother's brother under him and the protection of the Alderman, favor for favor? How about it J-fed? Or is it just business as usual?

Someone please remind me. Isn't that UIC/CPD baseball game a fundraiser for somebody, or maybe in rememberance of someone who may have been killed on this job? You know with all the crime problems that run rampant in this city let alone in this country, why is it that 20/20 a major national news program would single out this one event to try and determine if cops are drinking and driving? It's a travesty. But let's not stop these events. Let's invite these cockroaches to them and tell them what they're all about. Be smart people. Get a ride there. Take a cab when you are done. You make over $70,000. You CAN afford it. Don't gie them anything to report and they will never come back. It's that simple. I personally have been to hundreds of these benefits and I will continue to go. But if I decide to get a litle typsy, I'm gonna take a cab. I'll get my car the next day. Stay safe and be smart. And remember turn off 20/20.

Short but true story... After a holiday party I attended one of the officers that works for me was exhibiting poor judgement and wanted to drive home. I expressed my disagreement with this and called the 018 (1st watch)for assistance since this officer lived close by. The answer I received from some po on the desk, "We are really busy and don't have anyone available to help you out."
I call B.S. Every car in 018 was down on a job at 0130. B.S.
Professional Courtesy is helping out a copper before the situation gets ugly. Giving a fellow brother in blue a ride BEFORE he gets in his car, getting him/her to walk away BEFORE things get too hot, slowing someone down BEFORE that unnecessary boot gets caught on film. You get flagged down by a fellow officer who needs a ride, you do it. You get a call at the desk a copper needs a little help getting home, you drop what you are doing (googling SCC) and you find someone to do it. Bet 1810/20/30 would have done it themselves had someone asked. Screw the media, let's pull together and start helping each other out BEFORE the next scandal erupts. Start showing some comeraderie and be there for your brothers and sisters in need.

but seriously... many of us have given a drunk the 'phone a friend' option? or flagged a cab down for them since they didn't yet get into an accident or cause anyone any harm? Thats a courtesy thats been given to many people that weren't even the police so I really dont see the big problem with it.

Courtesy goes both ways. How many times have you heard or witnessessed a cop who acts like an a#&hole after getiing pulled over?

How courteous are you being when your drunk and put a copper and his families welfare on the line when you ask for a break.

The days coming when we will be required to ask for a supv when a stopped driver identifies himself as a cop. The cop will be beligerent and the Sgt. will say screw him write him.

Then the Sgt will be the A88hole on this blog.

But mandatory requesting of Sgts when a driver IDS himself as a PO WILL come.

And its our own falult. Too many cops with a sense of entitlement.

you can't give a guy a pass because he is your buddy, while simultaneously engaging in numerous revenue stops the rest of the day without the public feeling it is about as hypocritical as you can get.

3/03/2008 07:28:00 AM

Hey meat head! I don't know any P.O.s that are thinking about generating "revenue" when initiating a traffic stop.
In fact, most drivers talk themselves in to a ticket.

As for "professional courtesy,"
any person that is doing this job, and HAS walked in our shoes, gets a play. Now there are some exceptions, but we'll not dwell on those.

By the way, if the alleged tv crew is so concerned about the publics' safety, why didn't they approach these drivers as they entered their vehicles? The reporter can stop the driver and ask if they were going to diver. This stops anyone that may be intoxicated from possibly injuring someone.

I know, the story is less sensational. Don't let the safety of the public get in the way of a good story.

Re:
A West Chicago woman was in critical condition Monday after the SUV she was riding in Saturday struck a deer, which crashed through the window and struck her in the head, Kane County Sheriff's Department officials said.

The driver of a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee, who fled the scene, was traveling south on Illinois Highway 31 at about 10:20 p.m. Saturday with four passengers, including Adela Gomez, 25, authorities said. The driver struck a deer at 7 N 325 Illinois 31, in an unincorporated area between South Elgin and St. Charles, and the impact severed the deer in two, officials said.

It appears that over 75% of the accidents being reported in the news are people with Hispanic surnames. Many are charged without drivers licenses. I would gather this is mostly due to being here illegally. So no license or fleeing the scene as this driver did would also mean no insurance. How much is all these illegals really costing us? Truly a shame.

not an old timer...son of an old timer...story is second hand but pretty close

AFTER the DUI...Skippy was following 018 dist coppers around with a camera..had an axe to grind and looking to make the coppers who locked him up look bad. He had video of them picking up dry cleaning, etc.

Media spin was that they should be fighting crime, policing Cabrini - Understand that was a VERY different 018 district - anyway, coppers get jammed up, file civil suit against Skippy and CBS that resulted in an out of court "undisclosed settlement" ... i think both of the cops (now retired) have fairly nice summer homes in Wisconsin

Not urban myth, pretty close to truth even if 2nd - 3rd hand

Aside from parking anywhere near by, many Tribune reporters park in the paper's parking lot, just east of the bar.

I am a former reporter and can attest how ignorant these people are.

And don't think for one second that they have ANY respect for you because they don't.

You, we, US ... gotta know that when you get an OEC call of "intoxicated driver drining red car E/B Irving Park from Cicero" ... called in by anonymous .... YOU, ME, US, ... CANNOT stop that car based on the anonymous caller. So if 20/20 calls this shit it ....ANONYMOUSLY ... then the same applies.

I know Boone. I knew him before he became the police. We used to play basketball together with some other officers. He worked for C.T.A. at the time. One rainy night while working in 002 I was headed s/b on Cottage towards 47th St, when I saw a uniformed P.O. in the middle of the street with a naked guy on the ground and a large hostile crowd surrounding him. My partner and I pulled up and exited our vehicle. It turned out the P.O. was working spec. emp. for CTA and all of a sudden a naked guy jumped on the bus with an angry crowd after him. The naked guy was nuts and had jumped on the back of a guys car and was trying to remove the antenna of his C.B. radio. The guy was from that area and had some friends around and they decided to take justice into their own hands. While in the street with this cop and crowd a bus going n/b on Cottage stopped and the bus driver got out with his ticket puncher and came to our assistance. That bus driver was Boone. You guys couldn't even carry his star case.

Wait until you get t-boned by the regular joe that works driving drunk -they made that decision to drive drunk- then tell me how you feel afterwards. So when you sit in your squad car mars lights on and on a traffic stop watch out for regular working joe DUI ramming his car on the rear of your squad car because drunks are attracted to those lights. Make sure you take them home and call the damage to your squad car parking lot damage. Asshat I wouln't buy a benefit ticket to piss on you.

Oh they say you were in the bar! Drinking what, prove it was alcohol in every glass/cup/bottle! Maybe you had 1 drink and then drank sparkling water becuase you were sick? The paper trucks it is on now when is that story going to break?

Some of the biggest jagoffs on the job work the desk.

A family member of mine went into a
north side district and asked for a theft report. The salty old timer at the desk told him to go home and call 911. He told him that his relative, me, advised that he not bother the street guys, as the offender was unknown and no ET was needed.
This crack P.O. said, how do I know you're related to the police, no report.

He was close to the station, that is why he didn't cal 311. He did call later after the vip treatment.

The salty old timer, F/2 that he said looked 20 yoa.

J-Fed,
Put the entire department in day off groups, 1-7. These house cats don't need weekends off. They can do nothing any day of the week, not just M-F.

Skippy wrongly ID'd (leading story) a UC narcotic's copper as another copper that worked in 011 when the copper in 011 was getting mildly jammed up. Jepordized the UC copper's life, etc., etc. Skippy and news station had to pay out in the 6-figure range. Sweeeetttttt!

Who the eff are these "supposed" police whining about swearing? When I was in the acadamy, the instructors, went out of their way to cuss, to get some people used to hearing it, and get desensitized to the WORDS. That is all they are, words, if you give the words power, that is your problem. If you take it personal, its your own damn problem. I learned from excellent fto's, that your power is also in your pen, and I was able to pass that along to new guys/gals that same advice. Pay attention to this short lesson, when you consider yourself being disrespected by words, does the opinion of that person really matter, does it affect you or your life, or your families lives? Obviously, the answer is NO, so do not let the words bother you, use your pen! Be it another ticket for that TVB, or a really well written case report. And always remember, what comes around, goes around. And if I have any typo's/misspellings, I don't need to be corrected, as I know I, or my typing/spelling are not perfect.

"You are a moron. You are the police and enforcing the laws of the state is your job. Dui is more grave than a regular moving violation.

Poor baby.

Life is full of unpredictable hazards and you think that making laws prohibiting dangerous actions will eliminate those hazards?

Or reduce their occurrence?

Hindsight is always 20-20, and there's another meaning to the word 'hindsight', as in seeing the world through your ass-eyes.

You can choose to use those eyes in your ass, just remember to wipe thoroughly before you open them.

The UIC/CPD softball game as been around for awhile now, it's whole purpose is to raise money for the families of fallen officers. The video in question was bullshit and not filmed by 20/20 but in fact by an anti-police jagoff who goes around to police functions with hidden audio/video in an attemt to "catch" a copper doing something illegal.Despite all the rumors NO COPPERS were filmed drinking in uniform and those who were filmed with a beer in their hand were off duty and obviously over the legal drinking age. There was not any proof as to how much any one person had to drink and if he or she were intoxicated or were too impaired to drive. There was no merit to the video but it did in a way work to the jagoffs advantage because it spawned rumors and accusations among ourselves. The event was and is done for the best cause imaginable, raising money for FALLEN POLICEMEN. Stay Safe out there!!!!

Yes, on State St. What are you, like 25yrs old. You were probably about 5 or 6 then. It was when they first began to develop what would LATER be called the "South Loop". Circa 1987-88 Once upon a time the only buildings on the "Low End" now known as South Loop, were the Jets, warehouses, Warshawskys, Pacific Garden Mission, A couple of firehouses (your only bathroom option), police headquarters and Metropole Hotel, Al Capones old headquarters headquarters.

I worked Housing South with Boone. He is a real nice guy and he will always back you up but he does have some kind of psycho swearing thing going on. I swear like a truck driver. Boone swears like he has Tourettes Syndrome times a thousand. And he swears so loud you'd think he had a megaphone. Like this, "So I fuckin' told fuckin' fuckface motherfucker, fuck you. You fuckin' come fuckin' near me fuckin' again bitch and I'll fuckin' fuck you the fuck up punk fuckin' bitch. Fuck you." Just like that. And he could go on for hours. But he really was a nice Sgt. and he had your back 24/7.
