- [Washington DC] The Metropolitan Police Department yesterday moved cautiously into its program to ask to search homes in the District for illegal guns while civil rights activists knocked on doors and used bullhorns to keep residents from participating.
The department initiated its program by distributing literature at police stations and Boys and Girls Clubs to gauge public interest. It plans to begin the searches in two weeks.
Police spokeswoman Traci Hughes said the Safe Home program attempts to reach parents or guardians who think or know their children have guns and will offer amnesty for certain gun- and drug-possession charges.
The Washington DC police department has promised to overlook any found drugs, housing violations or anything else that could come to light during these voluntary searches. The ACLU of course, doubts this and frankly, so do we. Does anyone really think if the police ran across something like the "Keystone kids" living in squalor and inhuman conditions that no one would go to jail? Or a meth lab? Or some beaten and bruised domestic victim? Of course not.
As the article notes, there are already mechanisms in place for parents to get unwanted guns and drugs out of their houses - call the police, be a parent, and get junior on the right track.
But to have the police go door-to-door and ask for guns? Someone keep the mayor away from the TV, radio, newspapers and internet for a few days.

the police here have to follow the rules but in foreign countries the police make up the rules as they go. that's why crime is rampant here--- we allow it to happen without keeping it in check. we could keep it in check but our hands are tied due to all the do gooders and their liberal bs.

Here's my question. What if one of these 17 yo honor roll students while away attending classes, mother allows the police to search thier residence, and a murder weapon is found, can that really hold up in court?
Sort of sets hisotry back 300 years. I'm sure you will hear the DC residents yelling in the streets as the cops come to do the searches, "The Blue Coats are Coming, The Blue Coats are coming." I know the Chicago Aldermen think its a great idea, as long as it's in someone else's ward.

First of all, probable cause doesn't get you into a house - no matter what they may have told you. Probable cause is what GETS you the warrant.
Second, as long as you can get "knowing" consent, then doors be open and search away.
Personally I could give shit, but I'm sick of people mis-stating the law.

I don't know why you say the paper was embellished. All the video of the place showed the absolute squalor those kids were living in. An industrial strength power washer couldn't have cleaned that place up.

Years ago the SS came for my neighbor's guns and none of us helped him, Several days later they came for him. Then they came for my other neighbor's guns and again no one helped him and again they came for him several days later. Yesterday they came to my home for my guns but I left before they came because I was the last one in the neighborhood.

There wouldn't be copper the first on the street in 011 (or probably any other ghetto district for that matter) if we actually notified DCFS, SVU, etc. every time we set foot in one of these places, and you know that's a fact.
