Uniform Changes?

Any truth to the rumor of black vest covers, turtlenecks and cargo pants being outlawed?

A point for J-Fed if he's reading:
  • We needed something better than the current 80/20s. The cargo pants are a decent material, but those side pockets are just goofy. Keep the material, go to a standard pants style.
  • Turtlenecks are not a bad thing. Get rid of the tie instead - make it a dress uniform item only.
  • Black vest covers really ought to stay. They don't show the dirt and wear as badly as blue ones. You want to see some atrocious vest covers, look at the ones supervisors wear. They're supposed to be white we heard, but yellow? And every single grease stain or black mark shows up on them. Black is fine, but standardize it across the board.
Debate if you like.

The black one's are the best. Put a police patch on them if you want them uniform, but please, I can't afford to go out right now and buy a bunch of blue ones. They get nasty real quick. No amount of Oxy-Clean can save them.

Had they choose Obama's Church, I doubt there would be any IR numbers issued, just M.E. numbers. They would of been killed!

Navy blue shirts for every non-exempt member. White shirts for exempts only, and for everyone if in their dress blues. NYPD and LAPD do that, why not us?

The navy shirts would blend in with the navy/black vest covers and would look a whole lot better.

Won't happen though, city won't pop for new shirts for us....too bad.

SCC, I'm with you on this one.

The should be doing everything they can to make uniforms the darker color that you see in some quarters, and specifically because lighter color ones are harder to maintain and more easily show wear and tear.

Instead of getting rid of black vest covers, make the uniform shirts significanly darker, like dark blue.

On the other hand, I disagree with you about Cargo pants. Those show up a little bit better on a big butt than stretched polyester.

OFF TOPIC: DUI Strike Force Patrol Scheduled for March 28, 2008 in the 16th District
The Chicago Police Department will conduct a DUI Strike Force Patrol in the 16th District, beginning at 7:00 pm, Friday, March 28, 2008 and ending at 3:00 am on Saturday, March 29, 2008.

The purpose of the program is to saturate a pre-designated area with roving police officers who continually monitor vehicular traffic for signs of impaired driving. Patrols also place emphasis on speed, alcohol-related, and safety belt violations. Police vehicles equipped for sped detection are deployed to apprehend speeding violators.

In addition, the Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile Unit may be deployed to allow officers to expedite the process of charging a person with Driving Under the Influence (DUI) prior to transporting the alleged offender to the nearest lockup for bonding. The mobile unit also allows for Individual Recognizancce Bonds (I-Bonds) to be issued at the site of the DUI Strike Force Patrol.

Re:
The woman suspected of being the "Weather Girl Bandit" is in custody in Los Angeles, it is reported.

According to MyFoxLA.com, 45-year-old Felicia Ellen Jones was arrested Saturday afternoon in connection with four bank robberies in the Los Angeles area.

The Manhattan Beach Police say Jones earned the nickname "Weather Girl Bandit" because she allegedly handed bank tellers notes demanding money while chatting with them about the weather.

The FBI and police apprehended Jones after both agencies received tips from anonymous callers, claiming they recognized her in bank surveillance images shown in the media.

Jones surrendered peacefully after agents contacted her and arranged a meeting at a designated location in Los Angeles, accompanied by her attorney, MyFoxLA reported.

Jones is expected to appear in federal court Monday to face charges of bank robbery.
_______________________________

So nice that the FBI arranged for her to meet them with her lawyer ina public place.

I guess going after bank robbers and hitting their home with search warrants is a thing of the past. I am sure if she wasn't a black female but a white male, they wouldof hit his house with 50 armed agents.

off topic, but very important: I just saw a comparison of the contract proposal comparisons between the city and FOP. WHY is the union doing NOTHING about eliminating the sixth day? They have a ten hour schedule for rapids only and a six-three for everyone else. Fuck that--get rid of the sixth day completely!! Everyone should be calling down there telling these assholes (who work Mon-Fri) that the patrol officers do not want six days. Anyone who is in patrol should show up at the Union meetings and let them know this. Or FOP, take a poll of officers in patrol and find out what these officers think. Everyone that I talk to says that you can stick that sixth day up your ass. GET RID OF IT. Also, ask anyone that was in housing how they liked the ten hour schedule we had. Not one complaint because it worked. What is so hard about adapting that schedule for patrol? Maybe I'm way off, but I truly believe that this is the issue that is most important to officers in patrol--eliminating the sixth day.

I never understood why the vest covers are black instead of the same color as the pants. I think your name and the star should be embroidered on the vest itself. While on the subject of uniforms and uniform care....

Soon almost everyone will be taking their winter jackets into their dry cleaners. Here is a suggestion based on some (sad) experience. When you bring the garment in, and this is for your civilian coats also, take them apart and check in the liners as separate items on the ticket. It will probably cost more but this is a once or twice a year gig.

When you get your order back, CHECK it to see that you got the right stuff. Years ago, I got mine back hung it up in the closet, and come next November found that they me back the wrong liner. To top it off, the dry cleaner went out of business and I had to buy a new jacket.

Stay safe, and recycle your hangers.

Adding to....Stay safe and recycle your hangers.

Leaving liners in the garments puts a lot of stress on the zippers while being cleaned. This can cause them to break teeth or pull away from the rest of the coat.

Also, it's probably to take off loose and removable buttons.

Stay safe, next week we will discuss the best way to treat skid marks.

Jody, if you want everyone to look alike, then you will have to go to a commissary system like most large police department have. You issue everyone so many pants, shirts, jackets and maybe even shoes. As soon as something wears out, they bring the old in and get brand new.

If you'd like to change something about uniformity, I say make all the beat cars dark blue in color. Driving a white dirty car especially in the winter time makes a negative influence on the public view. J-Fed: bite the budget bullet and issue (one of each) dark blue shirts like most every other police department in the country. They look better, hide dirt, etc.

Establish a wear out date for the light blue ones and make the transition.

I am under the impression that the DOJ has mandated all police agencies to wear dark blue so there is uniformity nationwide and
there wouldn't be "incidents" over a confusion on whether a person is the police. Let security guards wear light blue.

Keep the cargo pants, best uniform change in years, if ever.

Screw the ties and turtlenecks, many police departments nationwide only wear them on dress occasions.

Dump the Ball Cap, they look really stupid, Very few officers wear them in the field anyways. Most other PDs only wear a hat for cermonial or detail duties.

I have one (ball cap) for roll call and it goes back in my bag right after. Make the crown cap for dress or details.

No stripes on pants, they look stupid and all a copper has to do is do what they did in the old days---put electrical tape along the stripe and go into the bars anyways (on or off duty)

Also, nothing like being on the L, otw to court and letting it be really obvious that you are the police.

I'm guessing any changes to the uniform standards would be made in an attempt to make the department appear more professional. Surely the new Super knows that what you wear has much less to do with professionalism, than who's wearing it.

I sure hope this isnt true. The uniform changes were the only kind of morale boost we have ever had (and that isnt saying much). Its about comfort and usability. Black vest covers must stay and must stay as an outer garmet, funky train conductor hats must go, they are not practical, cargo pants are all about usability and utility on the streets. If j-fed wants to make some changes lets see polo shirts in the summer.

If he wants to change the uniforms, he might read up on our contract before he makes some big mistakes. First, a uniform can be just discontinued, but anyone that was on the job when the uniform was approved can wear that uniform until the day they retire. New recruits will not be allowed to buy the discontinued uniform and the uniform stores will stop carrying them too. A great example is the shiny coat that really pisses off the inspectors but, by contract, that officer can wear that coat as long he/she was on the job when it was approved. Any write ups involving that coat will result in a win by the officer grieving the uniform infraction.

Any new uniforms are not going to happen; this city is way too cheap for that.

Heard their issue about the uniforms is the baseball & knit hats since people give them away as gifts, non-police personnel are wearing what is supposed to be part of a police uniform. And goofy policemen are wearing them off duty with civilian clothes. Secondly, the knit hat star is supposed to be worn facing the front, not on the side or back of your head. The cargo pants are going because people stuff them with things and they say they look messy.

Louie took the green maids uniforms and designed a uniform for himself. It was magnificant. He out did Mussilini. It had gold eplets, all kinds of ribbons and gold trim, it was just beautiful!
Old man Daley saw this outfit at a media function and told Louie's handlers to take him home, strip him of this uniform and burn it so he can never wear it again. You guys should have been there, it was great and real Chicago politics.

The only reason this is even being discussed is our contract.

The Dept would love to only have the Black Vest Cover, Turtle Neck(for field duties, tie would be for court and award cermonies/St.Jude) Cargo Pants (for field duty/regular pants for court and ceremonies)and the 3 season jacket.

The dept can't do that because the contract would consider the black vest cover/cargo pants/turtle neck/and 3 season jacket as first issue. Thus the city would have to pay for everyone to get these items. The items I just mentioned are all options for the field uniform.

Thus to make everyone look the same they will eliminate optional street uniform options.

The FOP could use this as a bargaining chip. I hope they are reading this. I would gladly go out and buy a new jacket with my uniform check and not have the health insurance premiums raised for the next 3 or 4 years.

It's not the uniform. It's the stroke bosses wearing it.

I've spent my time working the streets of violent, high-crime West and South Side districts.

Like others, I paid my dues a long time ago. There's one thing I can't tolerate. When they promote some of these latte-sipping, Prius-driving clout cocksuckers that spent their whole career in some inside, empty-holster job or just North Side districts.

I will never respect these people. They are a disgrace to a uniform in which many of our colleagues made the ultimate sacrifice.

Yet, they come into hot spots like 007 and 011 and tell us what to do. Fuck 'em!

Rule #1 should be that EVERYBODY must pay their dues. No exceptions.

Detectives spend thousands on suits???

Are you kidding???

The only detectives in this city that would not be arrested by the fashion police would be the cute boys at A/3. They give me the vapors.

Now, kees me you fool!!!

I say go back to the old days when the females wore dark blue skirts and cross over neck ties. That was one hot uniform!

3/23/2008 11:42:00 PM

I think they should bring that uniform bback for males and females. but the males have to be like the Scottish wearing Kilts. No underwear. Then we can all free ball.

This friggin dipshit's got a helluva lot more to worry about than yet again spouting off about our uniforms. This fucker's obviously had a fucking wannabe attitude about the CPD and now that he's conned his way into the job for a little while he thinks he's gotta fuck with what we wear just like a little boy who has nothing else to do.

This fucker better wake up and smell the shit he's throwing around 'cause this city's gonna burn this summer and whatever the fuck we wear ain't gonna have a shitfuck to do with it.

Grow up you fuckhead and spend some time figuring out a way to protect your crew rather than act like a little school boy wannabe who aint never gonna be.

Ok Jody I know you read the blog to catch up on real police work so now that youre done merit selecting to appease the diversity issue get me some help and promote some Sgt's. How convicning can you be to the rank and file that in days you can with one broad stroke of the pen promote a bunch of gold star political hacks.
Ok it was two or three strokes of the pen but cant promote Sgt's from a list of hard working coopers? Hmmm
Working coppers over political gold stars.

3/23/2008 11:31:00 PM

BLOW ME!
NOw go back to playin computer games instead of doing police work!! Oh and im sure"the best way to go" for you is a London Fog jacket and some Sans-a-belt trousers!!!
Fucking dork!!!

3/24/2008 02:23:00 PM

I did not write the original post but I would be more than happy to respond. You can call anyone you want a Fuckin Dork as you put it just remember one thing D2A stupid.

Oh and by the way keep doing police work as you call it, pretty soon you'll be in callback for doing it. And generate a little revenue while you're at it because you need to keep your car or your tact spot. Keep calling names, just remember one thing you may need us 1 day when we have to clean your mess up.

Gimme a break you 2 year wonder.

off topic, but very important: I just saw a comparison of the contract proposal comparisons between the city and FOP.

3/24/2008 06:34:00 A

You think anyone will go to the meeting? We as a group barely vote for officers, and it's a mail-in ballot.

Crown hats w/checkerboards look professional; you look like the police. Same with ties. Turtlenecks are fine in winter. Baseball hats are idiotic looking. It's bad enough that 60% of the people on this department dress like slobs already.

Hey sgt with the white vest! You do not need an ordinace against hat bands on rear view mirrors, the violation is for obstruction of view by having anything hanging from the mirror. You are just what the department does not need, supervisors coming up with insane ideas when if they knew anything they could already handle the problem with current laws, department guidlines, and just plain old common sense
