One of the quoted individuals says the cat was untagged, leading to speculation this could have been an exotic pet. If not, and as evidenced by a booming coyote population, we might just be seeing a resurgence of medium sized predators returning to the area.

If you read the comments following the Tribune article, you'd think the police shot a 5 year old boy with a water balloon. A lot of the comments were along the line of tranquilizer gun should have been used, police over reacted, cats were here first....etc..
I cannot fathom the logic of those who said this crazy shit. I appreciate wildlife, but when a big cat such as this comes into an urban area, it needs to be put down. Anyone who says the police fucked up should have been given a cargo net and told to snare it and hold it. Yeah...right.

It was actually a mechanical cougar. It was used by the CPD north area gun team to draw out homeowners who illegally posess handguns w/in city limits. Police did the reverse sting from 0600 hours until 1800 hours after confiscating 30 handguns from law abiding citizens who attempted to protect the neighborhood. According to J-Fed, the sting will move further northwest throughout the week. After recieving ducttape and oil, the cougar will be back at work tomorrow.

Dozens of shots were fired due to no rifles being available anywhere. The police don't have rifles readily available and the citizens in that liberal neighborhood don't like to even look at a gun much less have a rifle at the ready to loan the police.
I did hear that the Starbucks nearby had their business go up 250% as the police provided entertainment for the liberal scum.
Many people were seen sipping cappuccino using their Blackberry devices writing nasty emails to PETA condemning the police for using VIOLENCE to destroy this beautiful creature of God.
On a more minor note, the neighborhood bank three blocks west of the cougar incident was robbed by a gunman demanding money earlier in the day. It was a poor and oppressed descendant of slaves angry due to never receiving his 40 acres and the mule. Ho hum.

Did officers try verbal judo before using deadly force? Did they have a round table investigation? Why not use a taser? Oh the humanity!

Dear Mr Cerda,
If you are so concerned about the children playing in this area, when the parents knew the cougar was running loose all day, you should "Sue the Parents" and have their children taken away for child endangerment. The cougar could have done more damage to their children then PO "shooting a gun at the cougar" in an alley where there should not have been any children.
PO's are trained to use their weapons to hit the target, not the bystanders that may be lulling around. These officers are not drive by shooters, they have to qualify with their weapons and pass target practice. They get scored on this. So, next time you have a cougar running amok in your hood. You get a net and catch him.

Tranquilizer gun, are you serious! After leaving CPD in 1999I ended up as a Boss in a large jurisdiction with a lot of wildlife.
Occasionally my Officers and Rangers would have to put down Horses, Cattle and even Wild Dogs. We explored the possibility of equipping some of the men with tranquilizer weaponry.
It got so complicated, what with the level of training needed and the DEA licensing to carry the medications that we said forget it.
When I was in 015 years back it took me 5 shots with a Beretta 92 FS to put down a Pitbull who was attacking me, I can only imagine what it was like to face down that Cougar.
Investigation my rear, those Officers are heros, thanks for a job well done! I am glad there are Cops like that patrolling the streets where I am raising my Family.

I am not knocking the responding officers and they did a good job (glad no human was hurt). The thing is alot of these liberals and yuppies believe the stuttering midget that we are a World Class City. Being that the belief they think that we have nets, tranqualizer guns, and a on the spot animal control department.
In a real World Class City all of those tools would be available to humanely catch and release this beautiful animal that is doing nothing that the good Lord intended it to do. Florida has agencies to catch and release gators in urban areas and the northwest states also have departments to hanle cougars,bears, and others wild animals that come to into urban areas. For the most part none are distroyed and caught and released. Only in the World Class City of Chicago does the police have the only option of lethal force.
So these liberals and yuppies ask themselves why in Chicago did this animal have to be distroyed. Not to knock animal control but when you call for them for an assist they are not responding for several hours. The city needs to beef up that unit and better equip them. Shouldn't this have been handled by our quick reacting,,,SORT cars. Once again a need for a long gun and no ability to deal with it. I'm sure the officers did what needed to be done, but a rifle could have done it safer and quicker. My Complements to all officers involved in this incident.
It displays to me, that in spite of all the allegations of low moral,supervisors not supporting their personnel etc etc.
The Officers that responded to the scene, were not intimidated by any of that, let alone a Cougar, and did their sworn duty. To Protect And Serve. They did not wait for the poll of public opinion, they saw their duty, and they did it.

Seems to me that having a decent number of cops armed with shotguns or rifles would have limited the number of shots fired.
I was in the military and I couldn't fire a handgun accurately beyond 40 feet or so on a range. Now add in fear and adrenaline and a 150 pound eating machine and I'm thinking my accuracy just went down 20-30 feet. The cat lunges at me and I am going to fire everything I have in its general direction and hope I make contact.
The guys who killed this beastie did their jobs. You have a predator like that running around you corner it and kill it. No waiting for Animal Control and tranquilizer guns. If it is a dead or harmed kid versus a cougar the cougar has zero rights.

ABC news put on experts, like an exotic pet vet and a zoologist. Both said the police shooting the animal was the absolute best course of action.
The vet said that a tranquilzer would have taken at least 20 minutes to take effect and would serve only to make the animal more aggressive. Both explained how dangerous this animal was.
The news also put on some old goof from the humane society who said cougars never attack people. A claim that is absolutely false.
Let's remember there are goofs out there on any news story and, of course, they will seek camera time. Obviously everyone who supports the police, really doesn't give a crap about commenting on the Trib website or running out to put their face on a TV camera. Those people are too busy working.
Stop constantly pitting us against the world because some hot broad with huge cans sticks a microphone in the face of any fool who lacks the common sense that everyone else has.

Question: Animal Control was called around 11am. Did they respond immediately? I don't see anything about the timeline from 11am to 5pm about the animal.

Well it took them at least 5 hours to respond. I recognized some of the guys out there and they all work 3rd watch. As many times as I've called them for stuff, I'm surprised they showed up when they did.
I for one will not be accused of being unprepared ever again. I will never be caught without a ball of yarn in my gear bag.
Until a the department can produce a streaming video on the correct procedure to capture cougars, watch commanders are required to show the troops the dinsey movie, "Open Season," in 15 minute intervals prior to the roll call.
David Cerda is a major asshole attorney married to some idiot news woman. He made about a million suing the department. He'll probably sue over this...should have let the cougar chew on David before we took action.

A term that was (maybe) mildly amusing at one point, now overused on this blog until reaching cliche proportions. Not quite as annoying as "Shitcago" and the equally un-clever "Crook County," but nonetheless extremely worn. Posters who use these terms almost instantly lose credibility without even realizing it.

hmmm... kinda makes the case for at least one supervisor and a dedicated 2 man rapid with a shotgun & semi-auto patrol rifle (.223 is ok, .243 or .308 is better) in the car or just for amusement's sake the random p.o. with a .45-70 lever gun... hard to argue with the 405 grain slug from the lever gun. hell, it would be nice to have the option for heavy loaded .44 special or .45 colt revolvers... yah yah you civilians and new jacks will flame me but the old shooters & the guys (& gals) who fish & hunt may understand where i'm coming from...just a thought...
