Curfew Violations

Not that we're keeping track or anything, but the last two shootings involving minor children happened after the kids were out after curfew.

In the case of the 15-year-old that moved out to Gary (but returned to Chicago to be killed), she was shot on a weeknight at nearly 11 pm, a bit past the 1030 weeknight curfew.

The 4-year-old was out around midnight with family members who had more than a passing familiarity with the dope trade. You can't blame the kid for the bad choices of his adult minders, but a child that young really ought to be in his own bed at that hour, not being shuttled around dope spots.

And Daley just backed the curfew another 30 minutes or so. But until parents take a hand in controlling their kids, it's just so much hot air.

UPDATE: As pointed out by a commentator, the curfew law did pass so it's 10 pm on weekdays now. Someone else suggests it's political cover for Daley being able to dismiss some homicides out of hand because they took place "after curfew." An interesting take on the situation - and very plausible.

Hey SCC,

Just so you're aware, I let my four-year-old daughter stand in front of the house (and occasionally on the corner) at 11p.m., air-fucking to various rap music between rounds of double-dutch. All I ask of her is to not eat the garlic flavored pickle-in-a-pouch while jumping the extension cord jumprope so as not to choke.

Can we please make it a law that if you are pushing a stroller/walking your 4 year old down the street between, oh, 2300-0500, summary execution is permissible? How in the hell is that a "cultural thing"? I refuse to shed a tear for anyone who lacks the common sense to not walk down the street at 2 am with a baby in one hand and a 40 in the other!!!

OK, but was the curfew intended to accomplish anything, or was it intended to give Daley a way to dismiss a certain amount of crime as Not His Fault because, after all, it happened after curfew and is thus the victim's fault?

Don't get me wrong, I know the *average* murder victim in Chicago is a lifelong criminal, I'm just saying.

Curfew was changed 1/2 hour earlier to 10pm and 11pm in March.

You know- there are awesome urban areas in the US where your kid can be free to do what they like with relative safety.

I;m glad I left this shithole and don't have to relate to this kind of crapola.

Re: the dope trade.

Doesn't it ever frost you that police are in effect being used to maintain a price support mechanism for criminals?

Do they still teach about alcohol prohibition in Chicago?

Or visit your average emergency room and ask the psych intake nurse why people take drugs. The medical people know. In fact I'm betting by now most cops know. They certainly know in Rockford because articles like this got published in the local free rag (The Rock River Times):

Addiction or Self Medication?

So why does it go on? Because no one has the guts to speak up when it might do some good. They all talk after they are out of the business. Prime example:

Law Enforcement Against Prohibition

Courage to face a shooter? In spades. Courage to face the press and the Mayor? Not in evidence.

I suppose it could be worse. Testilying and planting evidence is not too common vs. Los Angeles.
