Reginald "Akkeem" Berry said he wasted away during eight years in Tamms Correctional Center at the southern tip of Illinois.
Berry, a former Four Corner Hustler imprisoned for killing a gang rival over turf, said he lost 75 pounds from his muscular frame while in the state's only "supermax" facility, where he was sent after a series of disciplinary problems in other prisons.
He was paroled in 2006.
"Tamms starved me," Berry, 45, said during a news conference Sunday to promote state legislation to make the 10-year-old prison more humane.
Representatives Julie Hamos (D-Evanston), Karen Yarbrough (D-Broadview), Eddie Washington (D-Waukegan) and others have introduced a bill that would limit inmates' stays in Tamms to one year with narrow exceptions, bar the state from transferring seriously mentally ill prisoners there, and require a review every three months to see whether a prisoner should remain in Tamms.
Prison is supposed to be miserable. Tamms is supposed to be super-fucking-miserable. We're talking about the worst of the worst in this joint. It has to be properly regulated. The routine must be overly regimented. These jagoffs don't behave despite repeated attempts to punish, cajole, or correct.

Perhaps their most notorious inmate is former Fillmore resident and Interstate 57 spree murderer Henry BRISBON. After raping a last victim, his encore was to fire the barrel of a .12 ga. shotgun into her vagina to kill her. On conviction and imprisonment, BRISBON killed again.
Years ago, Newsweek magazine made Brisbon America's poster boy for capital punishement.
A bit of irony is that he is now imprisoned in the middle of nowhere near the south end of I-57 near the Missouri-Kentucky border.
Tamms "supermax" only holds about 400 inmates. This should be expanded to Stateville, Pontiac, Menard and the new Thomson prisons.
It's FU#@KING prison! It's not a vacation. The victims of the inmates crimes suffered a worse fate than they suffer. These inmates at Tamms were sent there because they verbally, and physically abused correctional officers at other state prisons. Or because their crimes, or previous convictions were so heinous that Tamms was the only prison in which they could be housed. They made decisions, in and out of prison, which dictated their incarceration at Tamms. May the elected officials sponsoring this bill burn in Hell.

Tamms is where Henry Brisbon, the I-57 Killer is locked up. He bumped his car into the car of a young engaged couple so they would pull over, then made them lie on the side of the road, told them to kiss your last kiss and blew their heads off with a shotgun. He got about $50.
Then he bumped into another woman's car, took her inside the woods, raped her and killed her too.
At Stateville, he killed another inmate while serving a 1,000 to 3,000 year sentence and was sentenced to death. Later at Menard, he tried to shank Gacy. He bragged that they would never execute him because he would continue to shank inmates and guards to death thereby consuming time being the defendant in more murder trials.
He claimed that his Black Muslim father taught him to hate white people. Later, he revealed that he's no longer a racist because he now hates ALL people.
There was a story about Brisbon in Time magazine. It was pro capital punishment and was entitled "The Worst of the Worst".
They should put all violent criminals who rob, rape and murder innocent strangers in Tamms. The needle is too good for them.
Oh Lord, tell me it's not true. A convict who is dangerous to even other convicts gets sent to a place where he can't lift weights and get "prison swole" and loses seventy-five pounds of muscle used to inflict pain on the sheep of society is bitching about it and democRATS take up his cause? Prison is not supposed to be rehabilitative nor necessarily punative. Prison serves a very practical, societal function: To lock these people up for the protection of the law abiding population. To separate the good from the bad. Frankly, most of these mopes will eventually be released back to society, so it might be to our benefit not to treat them like complete animinals.

OK, now some of you guys out there may not believe this, but I can assure you that its is 100% true. There is a Lt. Jarmus that works the in area one. He’s well to put it mildly a little, NUTS!! Some of the guys are being trained for heavy weapons from the area one gun team. On this day, the training was at the Harvey outdoor range. This Lt Jarmus show up on his own time, on fulro, with his own heavy weapons. He then begins to tell the guys how they are doing it wrong and wants the instructors to teach them differently. The instructors have pull the guys off on the side and tell then to ignore this Lt. and stick to the training. Nice. Can you say another merit promotion.

And by the way this guys is signed up for heavy weapons training. OMG.

Wow, we are telling Lt Jarmus stories. I got one. BBC was is Chicago filming Chicago Police officers dealing with gang members. I guess London has a bit of a gang problem. So Lt Jarmus is actually telling the BBC people where the warrant is and it’s a free country, the department cant stop you from driving around and if you happen to pull up on us as we do the warrant, so be it. Mike Mette's situation, wrongful arrest, conviction, incarceration, and, negligent medical care, can in no way be connected to the inmates at Tamms. Mike was a law abidding citizen, defending himself against an attack, after having retreated to avoid a fight. The inmates at Tamms are people who have committed violent crimes, and once in the corrections system, continue to commit violent crimes. Anyone who tries to draw a parallel between Mike Mette's situation, and the situation at Tamms should be ashamed of themselves.
