A Funny Thing We Noticed

The Tribune story about the cop fired over a $1 bag of trail mix had open comments from the readers. At last count they were pushing almost 400 and may have passed it by this point. And many, probably a majority, of the 400 comments were decidedly crude, derogatory, blanket condemnations by obvious police haters.

But the Tribune story about the three pillars of the community and members of the intelligentsia who drowned while stealing a boat at one a.m. in a fit of high spirits? Comments closed.

And this isn't the only instance. Whenever there is any single police story, you can cruise the comment sections and see the depths of contempt and hatred Tribune readers hold for the police. But let one altar boy catch a stray bullet, one twenty-time-loser who was just about to turn his life around end up on a morgue slab, one future leader and heart surgeon drown stealing a 600-pound boat become a news item and :::WHAM::: those comments are closed faster than a 16-ton weight dropping from ceiling like a Monty Python sketch.

We don't expect anything more from the Tribune. They, like most of the rest of the dead tree media, aren't long for this world and they've been a disappointment for years now. McCormick would be ashamed.

Adios you liberal rags!!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Absolutely, SCC. I managed to get in one comment there, but got dissed by some Latishas, Tennilles etc. when they didn't like my comment. When I responded with a further comment, it was never put up on the site (not the first time they've refused to put up my comments!)

The media AND Daley suck yak penis!

All of my friends, family and neighbors respect what we do everyday. They have average jobs and live in average neighborhoods. I guess they are the silent majority. Many have mentioned to me they no longer buy the papers or watch the local news on Tv. I wish more of the "silent majority" would let the "Media" know they are TIRED of their biased reporting!!!

O.T. As I was looking through facebook.com, I noticed they have a sub-group called fuck the police. With the way we as a group are viewed, is it any wonder why anyone of us gives a shit about anything anymore? Cops run into a burning building and recue citizenry? Put that on page 7, but a guy forgets to pay for a bag of nuts and that's first page news. I've never thought about leaving, but the current climate/ regime certainly allows for thoughts of retirement to cross my mind several years in advance. Please stay safe and look out for one another, and don't be too big as to accept a helping hand from another cop!

Two things. One, notice how all of the media made sure to mention that everyone went out to purchase NEWSPAPERS to memorialize the Obama victory because digits just don't do justice to huge events. A plug? Yeah, I think so. Save the dead tree media at all costs.

Second, don't think that if you control the media, much like SCC can control what goes on this blog, you won't spin your own angle on anything. We'll never get a fair shake because it's not in their interest to give reality a fair shake.

They pump their own angle, or should I say, the angle of Shortshanks and any other powerful influence, because it's who pays the bills and keeps them around.

Not to worry. We'll all soon be feeding from the same trough. Government is about to get bigger than anyone ever dreamed. Get your daily dose of propaganda and enjoy it.

And just in case I don't say it enough - thank you for all you do.

They also close the comments section whenever a pillar of the kommunity gets kilt standing in front of their house at 3am doing tha thang.

You all know the ones who write the negative comments - they have pudgy little bodies and few friends: they sit in mommies basement spitting out their hate. They would nver have the courage to say anything they write to your face. You should feel sorry for them - the crap they write is directed at their own failed lives more than at you.

And remember this - for every negative commentator out there, there are a thousand more who appreciate you and what you do - (except for the dogs on the job of course.)

Not only did they pull the comments, they pulled the story off that the comments pertained to.

And if you thought there might be some posters here at SCC that might have reading comprehension problems, just go through the comments on any story they post. I think being a moron is a required condition.

Give me the folding broadsheet or tabloid anytime. But I think this interactivity appeals to the kids. And being anonymous, same as here, allows some shocking views. Moronic and shocking.

I would like to see a month of No Law Enforcement.
It works like this. On the first day of a random month, all law enforcement nation wide is ordered to stand down.
No anotncements will be made, just notification to callers of 911. All callers will be instructed to handle any police matters in what ever manner that seems appropriate.

Law enforcement and other select demographics will be able to secure themselves and their families, the rest will be in the ultimate survivor expirence.

At the begining of the folowing month law enfocement operations will resume. This should open the eyes of many police haters. They will learn that conversation and group hugs don't tame the savage beast.

I know it's Lord of the Flies-ish, but what the hell.

We cancelled our subscription to the Trib right after they endorsed Obama. Had it home delivered for 25years. Felt sorry only for the delivery man I had for the last 15 years, used to give him a Christmas bonus, never late in any weather , right on my porch. They continued to deliver it, 3 days later I called they said they hoped I would change my mind so continued delivery, Told them it was never going to happen, got my refund. Then I get a form letter last week telling me they would be fair and balanced with their reporting even if they had endorsed Obama, listed 3 recent news reports they must have thought were conservative and won't you come back to the Trib BS. Must have been a lot of folks who cancelled for such a form letter and the day I cancelled had to wait a long time for a rep. GOOD RIDDANCE FIBRUNE!!!!!!!!

I know you only approve comments where you guys slobber all over each other, but rest assured that there are those of us out here in Chicago who can:

A.) See that the article they posted about the $1 bag of chips thing was bullshit, the cop was railroaded, and the anti-police comments are from pinheaded fucktards

AND

B.) See also that those kids' drowning was an accident borne of simple teenage mischief and not nefarious gangbanger activity.

Have you become so "Us against Them" that you've lost ALL compassion? Your comments make me ill.

It's not the victims that draw ire, it's the mindset exhibited by the filing of the lawsuit, before the funerals, that is, for the most part, being criticized.

The language being used may not conform to your desired sensibilities, but work the streets for a bit and see if that helps you understand the choice of vernacular.

They close comments when the subject of the story DIED, dumbass.

Speaking from experience, it's upsetting to go on a paper of record's web site and see a bunch of nutjobs talking about how your friend deserved to die because of X, Y or Z. Very upsetting.

People like the wackjob PTSD cops on this blog would inundate murder stories on the Trib with comments about what a shithead the victim was or "how he was just about to turn his life around."

Doesn't help with the whole *loss* thing. Not everyone who dies is a bad guy.

My friend died a few years ago (shot in the head for no reason, CPD was useless) and people on the internet joked that, because he was Irish, it was an IRA hit. Others joked about how the Irish pour whiskey on their cornflakes. That's why comments are closed. Get a brain.

And yet, what do we see, time and time again, in print?

And what do we rarely see?

Because the shit in the papers doesn't write itself, now, does it?

And everybody but cops seem to be given the benefit of the doubt, no matter what they 'allegedly' have been accused of doing.

Maybe you just can't recognize vitriol when you hear it, read it or speak it.

And maybe the type of human beings you've been associating with aren't in the habit of 'calling a spade a spade', preferring the vague to the plain spoken, the innuendo to the clearly written statement of fact and the mealy-mouthed to the blunt and bitter truth.

Working in newsrooms, these days, is not much different than working amongst a horde of lawyers, politicians and advertising executives.

The bullshit flows like wine, and, maybe, you've been intoxicated for so long that you've lost track of what perceiving the real world is like.

Sober up for a few weeks and face reality, because those who 'report the news' are about as far from reality ass one can get.
