Leap of Faith?

  • Mayor Daley’s $6 billion 2009 budget — precariously balanced with 635 or fewer layoffs, slow police hiring and $52.5 million worth of taxes, fines and fees — sailed through the City Council Wednesday amid concern about even tougher times ahead.

The final vote was 49-1 after a two-hour debate.
49 to 1. Models of courage, those aldercreatures are. They'd put the Cowardly Lion to shame with the courage they simply ooze.
  • And there’s another potential pitfall. If the mayor doesn’t seal the deal to privatize Chicago's 35,000 parking meters by year's end — and get at least $150 million from the transaction to use for operations this year and next — he’ll have to find another way to close that gap.

The bottom line is that the City Council took what downtown Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd) has called a "leap of faith" by approving the mayor’s $6 billion budget.

We're going to go out on a limb and suppose that this "projected revenue" isn't the only "guess-timate" in Shortshanks' budget. There's probably enough fiction in there to make a mystery writers convention blush.

And don't expect any help soon - do more with less!
  • To save $10 million, only 200 police officers will be hired during all of 2009. With more than 400 vacancies already and an annual attrition rate of 600, Chicago could end the year 800 officers short of the police strength it had on Jan. 1, 2008.
And as more people get disgusted and leave, expect those shortages to be even more acute.

You better believe its a leap of faith. New York and California and almost every other state has been reporting monthly that their revenue projections are lower than than month before.

Not to get all economic on y'all, but this is classic Austrian-school deflation, where the only thing worth holding is cold hard cash. Tomorrow you can buy something for less than it costs today, but declining prices are only the sympton of deflation. The real cause is the destruction of money by lost debt/lost credit. And its hitting everyone and everything.

At some point, Daley will either get help from Obama or there is a world of pain coming to municipal workers.

On the subject of people getting disgusted and leaving....I heard that the officer who was on board the police helicopter that went down in the auto pound on election night has become the latest person to leave our helicopter unit because of the way Harry Hohm treats the people in that unit. At almost 64 years old, isn't it time they got rid of Harry the Hat? If he can't treat people properly, then why should he get any special treatment himself. Hopefully somebody will see the light and lay his geriatric cranky and incompetent ass off!! They would save $103,000 a year right there with just one layoff. Not to mention the fact that maybe they would be able to get people to stay in the helicopter unit for more than a year that way. That unit is the only unit in the entire department that has a revolving door with people leaving faster than they can be replaced.

Watch for CPD to really suffer and CFD to suffer next. Da Mayo hates that he has to deal with us because most of us tested to come on the job and did not have to ring doorbells to get it. We are of no use to him yet most of his budget woes are because he has to deal with us. Without law and order you have nothing. So get over it Mayo you need us because without the CPD and CFD you have nothing. Your lucky we cannot strike because 95% of us would like to but our oath is to the citizens of Chicago to serve and protect. It is not to you. You are not a leader just a user and the CPD and CFD will not let you use us. You disgust me! Your even disgusting non city employees that live on my block! Your use of fear to get re-elected is wearing thin. I predict you will not even carry the white vote any more! A leader your NOT!

More dirty Chicagoan's going to D.C.:

Also, multiple Democratic sources say billionaire Chicago businesswoman Penny Pritzker is Obama's choice for commerce secretary.

The sources say she will accept the job, which would be formally offered after vetting is complete. Pritzker ran Barack Obama's record-breaking fundraising effort, serving as the campaign's finance chair.

Let's see now...

2 hrs of debate for $6 billion...
1 hour per $3 billion...
20 minutes per $1 billion...
10 minutes per $500 million...
or $50 million per minute of debate...

Good thing Daley's Imperial Council only works part time! A billion dollars here and a billion dollars there, and pretty soon you're talkin' about some REAL money!!!!

Wish they'd give the contract a few minutes of debate!!!

I was over by Wrigley yesterday & noticed that on Clark St, from Addison to Halsted the city has removed all the parking meters in lieu of those pay boxes.

Were the old meters broken?!

Just one more way Richie is trying to scam more revenue from citizens!

And hey, if that pay box is broken I'm sure the meter maids will kindly refrain from issuing citations!

Yeah right!

RUNWAY UPDATES.
-from the Trib online.

Airlines seek to scale back O'Hare's expansion
With new runway set to open Thursday, major carriers call further building plans 'premature and inappropriate'

merican Airlines and United Airlines, the two largest carriers at the airport, said the O'Hare plan is flawed, according to the statements sent to city and federal authorities that oppose more spending on the project.

They called Chicago's effort to move ahead with the project "premature and inappropriate" because of the decline in air travel and the airline industry's uncertain future.

To, 9161 bitch.

Life ain't fair, so grow up. 9161 officers have not been trained to be, ETs, bomb techs, detectives, etc. But everyone of the afforementioned titles have been trained as 9161.

As an FTO, I explained to my Sgt that I no longer can write tickets, direct traffic, or handle any other function of a 9161.
All that I'll do now is evaluate recruits. Oh, there are no recruits, oh well...

By the way, when we win the grievence for not being allowed to work the detail, we will get our higher rate $$$ without ever having to stand in the cold.

Enjoy.

My biased opinion as for the Sgt. list is that it will remain up for several more years in order to make at 400-500 off the list. History shows that is usually about the number the city makes off the list and it costs the city millions to develope, administer and grade the largest of the promotional exams on the Dept. The city doesn't have the money and it would be quite a PR scandal if it got out in the media that the city only made 200 people off a list and then went and spent money like that to give a new test. This is only my opinion and I am hoping they keep it up for awhile so I can make it. Here's hoping.

Has anyone addressed these new STOP missions? Are you kidding me?? Is it official? Has everyone completely lost their mind?? Let's see, we're horribly undermanned, many districts have day-long backlogs, our homicide rate is climbing;I know how to fix it, let's down cars on every watch ON THE WEEKEND to do seatbelt missions. Hello media, reverands, city council members, firemen, teachers, city workers, ANYBODY!!! Like us or not but we, the police, are your last defense against this city becoming Gary, Robbins or Detroit. Your Mayor doesn't care, do you think any of his friends are losing money or jobs? Does anyone else have a problem with the leaders of your Police Dept./city thinking that the best way to address the rising number of murders in your city is to NOT hire more police and REQUIRE patrol cars to stop patrolling where you live and write seatbelt violations on the weekends, the busiest time of the week. Let's see, we won't hire new police, we won't try to stay close to the number of retirees, we won't even get these clout hacks out of their sacred spots that should be filled by civilians if they are needed at all, but what will will do is give you less police service on the weekend. For the love of God will this city stop worrying about what Obama is having for dinner and worry about your city, your families, you houses, etc.

Don't hate the players bro, hate the game. With 25 years on,you of all people should know what it was like before. For those that fell between the cracks,or their chinaman took care of them, let it go.You've been around to long to know it's not for real.If your a patrolman,no matter what your paygrade is,the contract says it goes to those with seniority.I worked each and every one of the projects when they were still standing,on my 1st day off after working 6 at straight time.I had a family to feed, etc,as I'm sure you do.
I never begrudged the detective,ET,FI,or whatever working next to me on their days off because they made a few more bucks than I did.We were, and still are,in the same boat.Just trying to make ends meet, because the midget JAGOFF we have for a mayor, would'nt give us a decent living wage if his life depended on it.CPD/CFD are not his friends, and he knows it.

30+with less than a month left,stay safe!

The Lt's test is only defensible in the democratically controlled Cook County court system.

Time for a buy out. With a buy out many problems could be swept away.

...You must be Soft or a Troll. If you think the Dept did what they did to take care of D1 you are nuts. It is a money decision. Also, it helps cause distention among the ranks which is something that benefits the city.
...sorry Detective "super-star", many of our case reports are in relation to cite a(n) amount of "dissension", that is, a misuse of a "t", ha -ha, you may have missed that one in '04 when you you made your promotion....

..............

That is your response? To point out a spelling error? You should re-read your post before slamming somebody else. I'll let you find your error because you are so smart.

Look we went from 14.500 in 1992 to 8,200 in 2008...lies lies lies...look it up

Wrong! I just looked it up last week title code 9161 has 9900 members. If you would look the Shit up instead of just reading the crap on this blog you would know that. There is 1300 Sgt. 1100 Det, 230 Lt, add up the exempts and all the other title codes and you get close to the 13000 they always talk about. All this is available on the Department Internet but you probably don’t know how to use it. You hear something from someone on this site who doesn't know what the hell they are talking about the next thing you know its gospel. You need to quit crying and be thankful for the job YOU have. Granted it’s not a perfect one but it’s the one you picked. There are a lot of people who are not as fortunate as we are.

WAIT TILL THE GET RID OF FELONY REVIEW AND THEN CUT ALL OVERTIME!

RELEASE WITHOUT CHARGING WILL B VERY COMMON.

///////////////////////////////

Felony Review does not, repeat does not approve charges unless it is tried over the phone by the ASA who just graduated from John Marshall. You have to gently apprize them of the statutes that are appropriate and they "will get back to you", with a decline.

If I were a criminal, I would only do my devious acts in Cook County because I will get away with it thanks to our wonderful "justice" system we have. Good for the bad guy, bad for the victim.
