Photographer Arrested Again

  • We checked back in with Mike Anzaldi, the freelance photojournalist who was arrested by the Chicago Police Department October 22 at a crime scene. Thinking we’d hear about the status of his arrest, we were shocked to learn he’d been arrested again - and the second offense is even more outlandish than the first!
  • This officer called his name into the dispatcher - here’s where it gets weird - and the dispatcher apparently told her to detain him. The officers on the scene were confused and clearly not in the loop, but nonetheless were following orders from above. After some back and forth with higher-ups, the officer told Anzaldi that there was some sort of problem with his ID but the computer in her car was broken, so she asked him to come to the station to clear things up. They promised it would take 15 minutes and they’d return him to his car. [...]

Four hours later, and he’s still sitting in the station’s interview room when he’s told they are placing him under arrest. He is not given a reason, an explanation, or read his rights. They put him in a holding cell, where he spent the night. The next day was Election Day, which is a court holiday, so he was brought to Cook County Jail and in front of a TV judge, where his bond was set at $10,000.

Either this guy has the worst luck in the world, he's a complete moron, or Monique is putting out a hit on his ass. We covered the first incident a week ago and roundly criticized the Department Spokescreature for an apparent Civil Rights violation. This is inexplicable to us.

After reading this I dont feel bad for the guy. Fuck em. Clearly he is the type who goes looking for trouble------>

Every day a cop comes up to me and says, “Who the hell are you?” That’s usually how it starts. It’s not always, “Who the hell are you?”, sometimes it’s, “Who the fuck are you?’, ‘What are you doing here?’, ‘Who do you work for?’”

He continues: “I don’t respond well to that kind of stuff. I’m more the type who’s like, ‘Who the fuck am I?’ ‘Who the fuck are you?’

O.T. but pertinent to police:

Police obtained warrant on a cockfighting ring, recovered all sorts of evidence regarding same, then thrown out by judge.

"A confidential informant, who told police about attending cockfighting derbies on the Martins' property, gave information to the police that was several weeks old. That's what led to the surveillance and subsequent raid, court records state".

"The information was four to six weeks old before the warrant was executed".

"Judge Stefaniak's granting of the motion to suppress left the prosecutor's office "without admissible and credible evidence" to move forward with the case, according to the state's motion to dismiss".
http://www.nwitimes.com/articles/2008/11/20//news/lake_county/docc14d4a4cb0b942158625750700008664.txt

This is a sad comment on the current and future state of American law enforcement. Like the rest of society, police budgets are being cut and jobs are being left unfilled leaving us all less safe.

This case is not the fault of some rogue judge or poor policing. As police ranks thin, there will be fewer personnel evaluating the same amount of incoming tips on crime conditions. You can probably expect to see more of this type of news ahead as it takes law enforcement longer to sift through, evaluate and act upon all of this information.

Our economic crisis is bound to have far reaching effects that we haven't even begun to realize!

Obviously he is your friend otherwise you wouldn't be trying to color these incidents as improper and opening up officers and the city to frivolous lawsuits. OR you're not a cop. Afterall, no one gets arrested for anything and everyone arrested has their rights violated. Yeah we've heard it before. If you are a Chicago Police officer, you KNOW that no one gets arrested for nothing, and NO ONE gets arrested because the dispatcher tells them too. Please.

Instead of putting the officers in a tough spot why dont you back them SCC. This blog actually use to be informative and have a good view on things. Know it is just another form of the scum times. Keep to the important stories SCC not your views on global warming or this stupid story. SCC you are not even putting the facts or the whole story in anymore.

I guess your blog isn't that cool afterall. This is the last time I view it.

SPRING CITY — Two local police departments have agreed to apologize for citing a man who took video footage of officers' traffic stops in early 2007.

The municipalities agreed to update officer training, write letters of apology and each pay $3,200 for the plaintiff's legal expenses.

Police must apologize to man who taped traffic stops

If a photographer is a problem, why not make a very large crime scene and stretch the tape as far as you can. I know the cameras have long lenses but at least they won't be near you.

The paper today said one of the arresting officers failed to show up to a court date.

When will you people learn.

You are responsible. Not the sergeant, not Bond, not anyone other than yourself. When you arrest someone, YOU need to have probable cause to do so. YOUR ass is on the line. Not the sergeant, not Bond.

When your signature goes on that arrest report, you can write all over the narrative that the sergeant told you to do it, but in the end, this shit-ass department will hold YOU responsible for the arrest. YOU will get sued in civil court. YOUR reputation will be smeared by scumbag lawyers like Loevy and brother.

So if you are going to play this game, with today's rules, you had better now what you are doing or you are going to get burned. If you don't know what to do, the best play is to pass, do nothing, go home, and collect your check.

I'm a civilian but I think anonymous at 11/20 8:38 said it the best. YOU have to make the arrest and YOU do the paper. YOU have to testify as to the probable cause and offense YOU observed ocurr. I find it hard to believe that some dispatcher told a PO to detain the camera boy and he therefore was. WTF! The whole story smells like shit to me. And Monique? She's a zero. She's two cents looking for change. She did nothing other than what she can do naturally-she bitched. She's not locking anyone up. She's not charging anyone with anything and the only court she will ever be in is a federal court. The whole thread is fiction because there are no details. As a civilian, even I can smell a shitty story. Umm, maybe reading this blog is making me more skeptical too.

Joe, I don;t give a fuck what you think. You wouldn't piss on a copper if he was on fire. Trust me, the feelings mutual.

When the KGB drags your ass out of your crib, nobody ever asks where you've gone, when you're coming back or what happened to you.

Nobody.
