RIP Pool Car

Our pool car died this week. It only had three days left until retirement and had served its purpose well. Barely 187,233 miles on it. One window didn't move and the other needed an assist to keep out the drafts and rain. Not that we cared, but driving it for a full tour meant finishing the night dizzy from the CO poisoning. We started most nights a quart of oil down and thanks to a generous garage mechanic, managed to finish the night barely a quart-and-a-half low. Tonight, the captain said we might as well walk a foot post because there were no cars citywide.

We mention this only because someone named "35th street eyes and ears" told us exactly where we might find our new vehicle:
  • The unmarked car in front of the Lt. from Management and Labor Affairs. Is there a need for an emergency grievance resolution?

The unmarked car in front of the Sergeant in charge of IAD records. Is there a need for an emergency disciplinary record?

The unmarked cars in front of some twenty (20) alleged "call out" Sergeants from IAD. This one is pure bullshit. The only reason they have cars is a reward for being asshole stoolies for Chief Fat Ass Can't Afford a Decent Wig Tina.

The unmarked car in front of the Director's of Finance and Personnel. I guess the need for an emergency check at 0300 hours exists - and the need for an emergency personnel order at 0300 exists - yeah right!!!

The unmarked cars in front of the numerous "hair gel" police from Information Services. They are there to ensure if some Commander's Blackberry is not getting his Tribune updates correctly is addressed.

The unmarked cars in front of numerous other administrative personnel who have never had an "emergency" call out.

That's where our anger should be brought to bear. Not on the "working Police" who really need the vehicle to perform their jobs.

One last comment. Just exactly why does the Superintendent's 5 year veteran "driver" have a nice new Crown Vic to drive home every day? Just another "blue tooth phone stuck in the ear" phony bitch.
We guess we won't be expecting that car for another year or so.

I assure all the SCC readership that as a resident of Beat 2211 and having the privilege to live near Lt. KG (the Lt. from management and Labor affairs) we fellow officers are all well aware of the car LT. KG drives. As a taxpayer Im happy he takes such good care of the vehicle by hiding the car way in the back of his side drive on the 104th block of "you know which street" in Mt. Greenwood.

Good ole Keith was an OPS investigator before he became the police and has kept inside jobs for the most part ever since. He use to joke with the guys at work he didn't know how much gas cost when it was over $4 bucks. What a dickhead.

J-Feds driver has a take home car??

Why not give us all take home cars? I suspect that we would take better care of them.

My squad only has 143,000 on it. A/C still blows cold even though I had to have a HVAC guy take a look at it, and 30 minutes later and a case of beer later it worked well enough to make you look for a sweater!!

Thanks fleet...It didnt need a new compressor

He has a POD Camera across the street from his new mansion on a block, in a an area and location where there is actually no crime to warrant the camera. When I first read this I started to laugh, wanted to leave a comment about how the car should have gone on the medical until retirement. Then I realized how serious this is.

Perhaps all the cars should be called in for the "celebration". If you have a car you better have it available for use that night. But knowing the city they probably will have all the pool cars assigned to the areas where destruction might occur.

Stay safe out there. Come home to your families and watch out for each other.

You should be fine since J-Fed said people need to behave themselves “We can’t have foolishness. We can’t have mischief".

Daley is telling everyone to come on down, then you have Ray Orozco saying Revelers will be turned away from Grant Park on Tuesday if too many show up for the Obama election night fest, city officials said Friday.

Stay safe, a wife that will be at her summer home out of state that night.

You be suprised at who has unmarked take home cars, more suprised who has take home cars and not members of the CPD. Fleet, has the ability to use any car for any agency deemed to need one, except marked. The amount of bullshitters using unmarked cpd pool cars was greatly controled when the CPD conatroled the fleet the last two assholes who commanded EMMD would not give pools to asset forfieture, iad, labor relations when theirs cars went down. But fleet even gives cars to garage managers, who are never called out, and are fleet employees. When the CPD was in charge having pool cars was JOPB #1. Not only does the mgmt of fleet not care about the working cop, they car nothing about cityzen protection, they wanted the cps money to help off set their waste. Remember when the CPD ran it they actually made money for the city in terms of warrantee recovery and salvage operations to name a few, bring the fleet back to the Department, that would give even J-Fed a boost.

Yes, you would be surprised how many people have unmarked take home cars. You would also be surprised how many people are on call, and do get called out to support patrol activities at night. The response is required by numerous general order. Not being a company man, mind you, but you must know, labor agreements require personel on stand-by (call out) to be paid at a rate of time and a half just to be on standby. NO UNITS PAY THIS, because many years ago there was a cost benefit analysis conducted and personel were requested to volunteer to be on call, without stand-by pay, in return they were allowed to take the cars assigned to their units to and from work, no where else. All the vehicles could be reassigned in patrol; but the cost would be paying time and a half to many just to be on call. If one person was on call the single cost would be 6846 hours per year. No just think that there are at least 10 people on call in various units at all times that is 68460 hours per year. Long ago it was decided that cars are much cheaper than payroll, as there are little requirements like increased payroll contributions that would be expensed to the city and unemployment compensation payment. So, bright guy, everyone in the department feels your pain; and in that spirit I refuse to be on call anymore. Now the city can have the car assigned to me and PAY ME. I will buy a Mercedes and you can wait for my response to assist you, or your watch commander, etc..... The problem is the city bought very few cars this year because of problems with Ford fleet sales. It is taking some time to get Chevrolet to make the fleet (cheapest cars and truck they make) vehicle required. So think a little deeper, try to understand complex business decisions and wait til all the new fleet vehicles show up in January. I will enjoy the new overtime checks. That is all

Its funny because when they cut the order for the SCABS to take over the Mo-Bama detail we were told that "they start tomorrow (sat) but there is no one in personnel to fax out the order until monday"
I have an idea, get in your take home car and drive to 35th street and put the order in the fax machine. Wait that would be too hard to do.

He was never a worse fit for this job than when he was the "tact lt." in 007. A seriously dificient street boss if I ever saw one. One day he even had us go out and conduct a "reverse sting" right on top of a spot that Narcotics had been working a mission on for the past two months!
That was by far the most boneheaded move I've ever seen.
Needless to say, narcotics people were more than a little pissed when they found out what we had been doing at their mission spot at the request of Lt. Keith. If there was ever a man who should never be released from Headquarters and returned to the streets, it's KG.

IAD 's misuse of the cars is a joke. The Sgts there were not allowed them under Minogue after one of the Sgts decided that he didn't need to answer a "call out". When that midget idiot Rowan got there she allowed her minions to take home cars again which effectively took away the cars from the actual investigators who needed them to drive to the slums on a daily basis. The cars that once were used by a team of investigators now "belonged" to these worthless Sgts. God forbid you need to use "their" car. As for the call out team, it is only a handful of Sgts each month.

Take away everybodys take home car. If some boss needs to be called out after hours then compensate him/her 3 or 4 dollars a mile for a round trip from their home to their destination. On police shootings I'm sure you would see a dramatic decrease in the number of unneeded bosses at the scene. Bosses could drive their personal cars to the scene, or to their unit and pick up their assigned car before going to the scene. There is absolutely no need for all these administrative people to have take home cars. Daley says the city needs to save money. He would save probably millions in gas, oil, tires, brakes, and overall maintenance if nobody had a take home car. We all drive to and from work in our personal car. To and from court in our personal car. To and from ERPS to get evidence for court in our personal car. We do way more duty related driving than the commander of Management and Labor Affairs, or the civilian Director of Finance, or ..............

Ok, this was explained by a frustrated motormaintenance employee, so not sure if its just rumor or what, but here's what theyre not telling you. In the past, at all areas motormaintenance, now fleet used to use old parts from damaged cars. Since Fleet and NAPA took over The police department repairs, they no longer use the good parts from damaged vehicles. Why? It's because every part has to be ordered brandnew through NAPA. Yep. (NAPA? "Friend" of Daley, and from the Neighborhood) Lets say a brand new squad car or any squad car for that matter has total rear end damage. The front of the vehicle INCLUDING THE ENGINE is of course, in mint condition. The sensible thing to do is to drop the engine in another vehicle. Nope! The vehicle is sent off to be destroyed. Even if your vehicle needed a damn rearview mirror, steering wheel, decent seats, air conditioning unit etc., NAPA is killing the budget too. But you don't hear about that.

absolutely correct. We inspect that car every week and it works very well. We could easily switch it out for a dead pool car and hook up it's lights to an AC to DC transformer and runs its lights all day. We used to have it running constantly but it burned too much gas.

Having been involved in driver training for the dept,I know that we as a Dept have decreased our crashes by 20% compared to 10 years ago. Our reward? The Department just buys fewer cars.

Just using common sense, when you have a new car, almost everyone is extra careful not to put the first dent in it. When you have an old beater, who cares?

Other depts have discovered that keeping their fleets updated is actually a good thing, less crashes, less IOD's and officers on the medical, less lawsuits from citizens, less maintenance costs, some resale value, etc.

It is very sad that the Dept thinks so little of us that we have this vehicle problem.

The fact is that this department is running on the bare minimum, from officers, vehicles, pdts, and radios. Anyone with a take home car that breaks down I guarantee you will be calling for someone to pick them up from the garage because there isn't any pool cars to give out, unless you are some big wig political hack.

LONG STORY BUT WORHT IT...
I have a few years on the job and a while back we had an HBT incident IN 025. A guy is having a domestic w/ his girlfriend and he gets a little nutty. She manages to call police and say she is being held against her will and he has a gun. A sarg. rolls on the call and is first on scene. Knock on the door, guy states everything is fine, sarg is askin to talk to girl when she bolts out the door hysterical. Guy slams door and calls 911 stating he's gonna kill self if poe poe come in. Sarg, then calls SWAT and makes it a job. I'm assigned traffic control down one of the blocks. SWAT guys are showing up when I see a regular car flying my way. I'm telling guy to stop, he's holding up a star, pulls up and says he's SWAT. So I let him through. This occurs 4 or 5 more times. When the job is over my partner is talking w/ a SWAT guy he knows. I ask why the have covert cars and he says THEY ARE THEIR PERSONAL CARS. These guys do not get take home cars and have to respond everywhere in their OWN CARS. No wonder it takes forever for them to show up when there is a job. YET HERE COMES MONIQUE BONDS IN HER COMPANY CAR. I guess it's more important to address the media about an incident then having the guys there that need to handle it. THIS CITY IS SOOO FUCKED UP IT'S SICK.

SCC,

Stop being jealous. If you had worked hard and kept your mouth shut you would have had a spot and a car also. I earned both and I am not ashamed to have them.

Well since you're so damned proud, asshat, why don't you post your name? Or are you afraid J-putz will see it posted on the blog he doesn't read, and take the spot and car back?

Since Fleet and NAPA took over The police department repairs, they no longer use the good parts from damaged vehicles. Why? It's because every part has to be ordered brandnew through NAPA. Yep. (NAPA? "Friend" of Daley, and from the Neighborhood)

11/01/2008 01:08:00 PM

Sorry, not true. We strip old/damaged cars all the time.

And NAPA has nothing to do with Chicago. They are out of PA.

We at EMMD don't fix your cars because we don't have enough people. Currently we have 28 vacancies (mechanics and electricans---no upper mngt.) that are not going to be filled.

And just try getting your squad fixed after dec 15th. The rumor is 21 people will be laid off. But again, no one from upper mngt.

Hahhahahahahahahahah NAPA! Of course they'd be a friend of Daleys! About every eight years or so they get caught up in a scandal of packing refurbished parts and selling them as "new". We now know where their next batch will come from. Daley ought to get a nice tossback from that. I have to alert all my car blogs like Samba know about this ASAP.

Why is there an unmarked car parked in front of a Lt's house that works at the Academy Monday thru Friday 8-4 with Sat and Sunday off? What does that Lt respond to?

"stop being jealous" means he/she worked hard to get the $500.00 to grease the alderman/woman to get the do-nothing spot he/she now has and the take-home car that enables all his/her neighbors to know when he/she's home instead of where he/she is supposed to be and all of we/us to know his/her business. So stop hatin'. Having an entire neighborhood and police department disrespect you like that doesn't come cheap!

The guys who brought this to our attention should get a medal. The "chosen few" already have good jobs. I guess they are so spoiled they need the little extras to go along with thier specialness.

Im glad someone is finally exposing this abuse of the system. I work with hard working civilian employees who earn less than 40K a year who just recieved lay off notices. They will be forced to take 3 unpaid days for the remainder of 2008. These are single moms (don't care how they got there) who are trying the best to raise their kids. If these perks are taken from sworn members earning in excess of 100k a year so be it. Sometimes you have to look deep into your soul. These employees deserve better. If by taking these cars away these ladies can keep their hard earned money - let it happen.

Okay "BIG GUY," I didn't realizing alley mechanic meant free. I assumed you were a big enough stroke to pay for it. I know strong arming the local piss bum alley mechanic to fix the cities ride makes you feel like the real police, but it's pathetic. Please remove your lips from the bosses left nut. If our going to put somebody else out to fix the cities car, you are an asshole. One more thing BlowJob, I lock up Joe every night, but only because of pride, not because the boss tells me too. The minute my Sgt starts to slip, I let them l know. So you, my limp dicked friend can continue your legendary run at being "The Ulitimate Suckhole."

Where is the UNION on this issue, in bed with Fleet?, or do they get unmarked cars to keep quiet. At one time union leadership was all over EMMD about the cars and lack of pool cars, and thats when Hillard (a bafoon) brought in two people who actually made the place do what is was designed to do, providethe best vehicles possible for the money they had available.
So the concept of Fleet handling the CPD arose after a scandle at the Fire Department. Hillards team actually made money for the Department especially in the area of salvage, increased warrantee recovery from 0 to 250,000 yearly, created strict standards as to who go pool vehicles with district law being first on the list.
So now that considration to hire consultants is being made, someone should reach out to those two guys who last ran EMMD, and offer them $60,000+ to make the department fleet work again. Besides it was worth going to garage 1 just to listen to them two guys argue with each other everyday, but they did a lot of good.
