Cop Home Invaded
Listening to the "all call" going out every few hours, seems he might have winged someone:
An off-duty Chicago policeman was the victim of a home invasion late last night on the city's West Side, authorities said. There were reports of gunfire, but it wasn't confirmed anyone was hit.
The incident happened on the 5400 block of West Ohio Street in the South Austin neighborhood about 11:30 p.m. Two suspects fled the scene in a 2000 Chevy Suburban, reported to have damage to a passenger-side window.
An all-call bulletin issued over police scanners warned patrol officers to be cautious, saying the suspects should be considered armed and dangerous. The bulletin also said to check hospitals for anyone coming in for gunshot wounds.
Be careful, on and off duty.

This has nothing to do with if this commander is an asshole or if you have a personal disagreement with him,he is still another cop and when another cop calls for help you go.bottom line. If you were getting your ass kicked and fighting for your life,would you care if the person who came was a person you hated? No you would want a copper to come.

FOCK U! It sounds only like this asshole of a "commander" called for another car on a traffic stop (more likely than not just to write a bullshit ticket) and not a 10-1. Sure, I will go to anyone's 10-1, but sounds like this wasn't the case. The 17th dist officers' lack of response was appropriate for a person who doesn't seem to have your back. So why would you take any action to have his?
I'm sure these mutts knew that was a P.O's home...Too bad he didnt grease them...

You know, the sad thing is with how much property values skyrocketed with the real estate bubble, 100 year old single families around that block that show up on a zillow.com search are still in the high 100s and low 200s.
Makes me glad I didn't listen to everybody over the past few years telling me things like, "buy now or be priced out forever!" and "property only gains in value!"

What I am glad to know is that they are all OK. I'd like to find the mutts who did this and house them for a long time. I'd like to know if they targeted a cops house. I'd like to know the M.O., did they knock at the door or grab the officer as they got out of the car. Again, thanks that they are safe.

I think this thread from yesterday
may be the LONGEST one I have seen on SCC,(257 comments at last look). I didn't really want to pull it forward into today's posting, but since someone else already did, and SCC obliged them, I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.
First, Congrats to SCC on the "Police Blog of the Year" thing. I don't know what honor or prestige it carries with it but by the landslide victory numbers, and the fact that you could only vote once, an odd thing here in Crook county, it's obvious that SCC rules the Police blogging world.
THAT FACT, is actually what spawns my further thought, that the comments that surface on the SCC posts, become very disturbing to me.
As you read through the comments, you learn the story of the whole Mealer "incident", as bits and pieces of the "truth" come forward. From a perceived call for help and receiving none, to what was eventually narrowed down to "He asked for a car. The radio was dead silent", a lot of information came out. Ultimately, that is a good thing.
What pains me however, is the utter savagry with which the commenters spew their hatred in reaching that point. Officers MFing Officers, MFing their bothers and sisters, MFing Northsiders, MFing Southsiders, MFing women, etc. Officers MFing anyone and everyone.
We all know this is not some secret, inside conversation being had in the roll-call room. How embarassing to expose this ugly underbelly of our Department to the world. Maybe it's me? I'm just a wheel gunning dinosaur who did my 30 yrs, 17 as a Sgt. and retired. We used to take out our hatred on "Mickey the Mope". It often appears to me that the venom that is exchanged on these blogs contribute as much to the disintigration of our once proud reputation as a Department as the current Superintendent and his poor leadership skills.
My father told me decades ago, "if you can't say anything good about someone, don't say anything at all". It wasn't a show of weakness. It wasn't a surrender to another's ignorance. Maybe it was just a kinder, gentler America. Maybe it was merely a respect of another's opinion or existance.
I Policed before there were air-conditioned squad cars or LED Mars lights, fax machines, laptops, or blogs. We had our jerks and jagoffs and a--holes and dickheads just like today, but no one had the ability to get on the internet and tell everyone about it. Maybe it just seemed we were more decent then, I don't know, but I'd truely like to see the blog show more humanity and respectfulness to their fellow Officers.
fock u: The point i was making that even though it was only a traffic stop,it could of turned dangerous and deadly in the blink of an eye so even if the person is the biggest asshole on the planet,you try to assist if you are close by.I am not a fan of this commander but if we start basing who we give an assist to on who we like,that can turn out to be deadly. What would happen if you called for an assist for something that is routine and it turned ugly and the people who were close did not come because they did not like you? I mean there are always going to be people on this job we do not care for but for the eight hours we work,your fellow officers are your life line and they can be the difference between a routine thing and something turning ugly really quick.Also there are good ways in dealing with an asshole boss but denying back up is not one of them . It does not matter if you are northside or southside,the most minor thing can turn deadly in a second and we can not afford to base who gets an assist based on personal reasons.

Great idea!!! So when that "cruiser" isn't there kind of tells everybody this would be a good time to break in? Lose the take home car dream and take all the stupid FLOP shit and checker bands off your personal cars and live your life like a regular person off duty. We are blessed to be able to carry a firearm to protect ourselves and our families off duty but why do we have to let every shit head know that?

Why the hell would I want to rush there to help the jagoff who the moment I show up to help him and do something not 100% by the book will take that opportunity to spar me for some bullshit. I will first say, I never worked for Mealer..... He never graced my 5 feet of personal space.
What I will say is...... On this job, and all other jobs, there are people that won't like other people, there are unscrupulous, underhanded individuals, meglomaniacs, sociopath's, narcissist's etc.......... We all have to work for or with them.....
BUT.......... No matter what, in OUR choice of work, we ARE ALL BLUE!!! No matter of personality, ideal's, intelligence, sociopathy, true regard or lack there of..........
We need to back up the "thin blue line", God know's the average citizen, the media and the police hater's won't.
If we do not have each other, we have nothing.
I am sure there were officer's that heard that call that went, that did not come up on the air. Run silent, run deep.
One thing i was taught by my FTO, which i HATED, was always help a brother and sister out, even though she did her best to bury me in the end, because of how i looked and what i weighed. She taught me one great lesson, do as she said not as she did.
No matter if he is a dick or not, no matter if he is a sociopathic, backstabbing asshole, back him up..... It is our way, to protect and serve, even if the people we are doing that for, HATE US!!!
