- If you're getting robbed in Oak Park, police want you to put your lips on a whistle and blow.
Police Chief Rick Tanksley is dusting off the actress Lauren Bacall approach to community policing in response to last year's alarming 46 percent spike in robberies.
He wants to outfit folks with brass police whistles they can use to attract attention when they spot shadowy characters up to no good.
Wow. Just wow. Call 9-1-1 then blow a whistle. Why didn't Shortshanks think of this? He could have saved millions for his Olympic dreams instead of installing cameras and letting police manpower numbers dip to dangerous levels. The simplicity of it is just amazing!

This whistle thing is nothing new. It was a regular occurrence in the south end of 021 (Hyde Park and the U of C campus).
Years ago, a Zone 5 simulcast might come over like this:
"21??, units in 21, attention units on City-Wide, the whistles are blowing at 5-3 and Kimbark. The whistles are blowing. 53rd and Kimbark. This is Channel 5 radio."
The citizens used to blow whistles in Hyde Park when a crime was in progress with somebody calling for help.

We moved to Oak Park not for our supposed liberal political leanings. We appreciated its housing stock of beautiful older homes, the convenient commute to Loop, pretty tree-lined streets, and school system's reputation.
The reality of Oak Park? Very high taxes, modestly ok schools (w/apologist approach to minority students' infractions and low test scores), slipshod city services (no salting of side streets, no pothole repairs, etc), and now - rapidly increasing burglary, theft, and violent street-crime stats.
For some reason, Oak Park Village Council and administration protects the OP police dept and its chief, even as crime incidents spike. People are mugged in their garages, home invasions, kids' bikes snatched, kids assaulted while walking home from school, playgrounds overrun by gang-bangers. PC talks about "people need to be aware", and about whistles, and about underpriveleged Austin youth, etc, but never: Oak Park Police will increase their vigilant presence. He's already survived a sexual harrassment investigation, so perhaps he thinks he's a bullet-proof minority police chief, who can excuse himself out of every increase in crime stats.
Go visit OPRF HS; more gang-wannabees strolling around inside than outside. Despite 5% annual "address fraud" stats, the gang problem is prevalent in Oak Park iteself. Recent 14-girl gang fight in cafeteria. A pervasive ghetto-rap influence noted in students clothing and mannerisms. A number of Oak Park resident teens arrested for drugs or violent crimes. People in Oak Park are afraid to comment on the decline of civilized behavior (and the increase in crime) because the community is ready to label any such questioning as "racism". Crime is not "racism"; it's a violation of civic trust.
PC should take his whistles back, and rethink his crime fighting strategies. Get more officiers in cars out on the street, INCLUDING HIMSELF.
Note that our sister suburb, River Forest, recently fired its incompetent mope PC Weiss, and hired Frank Limon as its new police chief. Interesting choice; an upscale super-expensive suburb hires an ex-gang crimes unit chief.
With the sagging economy, Chicago area is likely to see the return of '60s era crime stats, including the racially-charged "black on white" violent crime that people feared back then. Politically incorrect to reference that white fear, but I'm afraid it's already lurking here in Oak Park.
Where the fuck does people think we are living in. Did they forget what kind of animals surrounds them? A simple whistle is going to deter criminals from committing criminal acts. I’ve had people gun down at entire group while I’m in my square car 50 feet from the offender.

Second Amendment in Washington, D.C.

Fairfax, Va. - The United States Senate has voted, with overwhelming bipartisan support, to adopt an amendment offered by Senator John Ensign (R-NV) that seeks to protect the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens in the District of Columbia. The amendment, attached to S.160, the D.C. Voting Rights Act, will repeal restrictive gun control laws passed by the District of Columbia's (D.C.) city council after the landmark D.C. v. Heller Supreme Court decision. The vote margin was 62-36.
"Today's vote brings us one step closer to restoring the Second Amendment freedom of law-abiding D.C. residents," said NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox. "It's ludicrous that good people in our nation's capital continue to be harassed as they try to defend themselves and their loved ones in their own homes. This vote reinforces the historic Heller ruling."
After the Heller ruling, the D.C. city council passed a law requiring would-be gun owners to pay a registration fee, pass a 20-question multiple choice test, take a five-hour training course, undergo an invasive background check every six years, re-register any firearm every three years, and finally, submit all handguns for ballistics testing. Current D.C. law also bans an overwhelming majority of firearms commonly used for self-defense. This Ensign Amendment would also remedy that unjust practice.
"NRA would like to thank the lead sponsor, Sen. John Ensign for his efforts to reform D.C.'s gun laws and enable folks to protect their property and their loved ones," concluded Cox. "It's time for leaders in Washington to wake up to the fact that the Supreme Court decision is now the law of the land."

The whistle thing reminds me of a chapter in the "Choirboys." If you've read it, you know which one I mean.
I'm going to check the wifes closet. I bet I can find an old rape whistle from the mid 70's college days when the some organization for women was passing those things out to stop rapes on campus. So much for advancing technology in Oak Park. And the wall along the eastern border is a good idea. They already have a number of one way east bound streets anyway. Came out Chicago Ave. past the old 15th dist on Wednesday. (I know, 015 but I'm a citizen troller) Not surprising to see what that neighborhood has become. It was always rough but was glad I was in one of the late model company cars instead of one pushing 100K on it. Also brought back distant memory of the POS who grabbed the woman from her car in the Oak Park alley to do a robbery or rape. Her screams brought the attention of neighbors and the CPD and OPPD. As I recall, he was parading her around trying to make his escape with a knife on her. Then when the moment came, the cops lit him up. A very happy ending to the story. Great work! Think it was Austin and Augusta. Anyway, Oak Park is way over rated. It just is not that good. If you are going to spend the kind of money it takes to live there, move to Du Page or Kane. Its way better and way less bull shit.

I am going to try and play the "Devil's Advocate" here. I read the post that he is referring to. It was a post about St. Baldrick's and people offering to shave their heads. You made a comment about letting someone "shave your back" and the reader took it, I believe, as disrespectful. I think he was offended because he thought you were making a joke and I believe that he didn't feel this particular post was the place for that type of humor. Having a child with cancer is one of THE most devastatingly stressful experiences that any family can undergo and I understand how one's feelings can be very close to the surface. Knowing you, Bandit, I know that you meant NOTHING disrespectful or hurtful by your comment.

Please don't hold this against the Bandit. His main goal on the blogs is to lighten up MANY of the dire subjects that you all have to deal with every day, with his very unique sense of humor. Anyone who knows Bandit, knows that he is one of the most caring, kindhearted, generous persons that ever existed and he would NEVER, EVER, make light of something as serious as your precious child's illness. He was responding to one of the comments, NOT directly about St. Baldrick's.
