Steinberg Digs at J-Fed, Cops

  • Security is important, but so is doing your job, and the more effort you expend on the former, the less effective you are at the latter. One reason air travel is such a god-awful mess is that they put so much energy into checking our shoes that they forget to make flying a pleasant experience. You can cover your ass, or you can move it, but you can't do both.

Not to indulge in too much tea-leaf reading, but what I take away from this whole episode is that if Mayor Daley is forcing Jody Weis to kneel on a rail over a clever teen, then the sands of patience must be running out on our FBI-bodybuilder-turned-ineffectual-superintendent.

The shame about the masquerading kid is that, had he been an actual cop doing something amiss, his colleagues would have smoothly and automatically covered for him, swearing they knew his identity all along and were being indulgent. But because he was an outsider, the time-honored system of reflexive police prevarication failed.

Too late for that now, though if it nudges Weis toward his overdue retirement, I will not be alone in feeling the embarrassment is worth it.

Of course, Neil has to get in his dig at the police - had he been an actual cop doing something amiss, his colleagues would have smoothly and automatically covered for him, swearing they knew his identity all along and were being indulgent - completely ignoring the fact that a majority of cops called for Abbate to be fired, were disgusted by the towing scandal arrests, and are unhappy about the unlawful behavior exhibited by less than one-half-of-one-percent of the Chicago Police Department.

It's not like we're drunk and crooked aldercreatures. Or wife-beating columnists.

a blurb from a 2005 sun times article following neils drunken arrest for punching his wife.

"I'm deeply humiliated to have brought this misfortune on my family, and am eager to do what is necessary to set it right," Steinberg told the Sun-Times Friday.

The paper quoted Steinberg as saying he had been drinking before the incident, and will enter alcohol counseling Monday.

wow neil... what a jerk. ive never ever hit my wife and im a police officer. you sir, have no room to write the nonsense you do about the chicago police department. but, of course your not going to take the side of the police.... your a criminal and criminals stick together. hope you got that counseling and your wife feels safe at night..but you know what they say, once a wife beater always a wife beater... what a big man it must make you feel like neil. try and hit someone your own size...or just try to hit a man at least...but we all know your too much of a coward to confront a man face to face...you just use your useless little column to try to make the whole police department look bad for what a small number of police officers did wrong in the past. As for the good officers in the city(99% of the police officers),we will never be as bad as a man that willingly hits a woman...especially his wife and mother of his children... coward!

I almost forgot about that incident so I decided to do some searching thru the web and found a Trib article by Eric Zorn. In it he has a quote from Steinberg's first column after a 68 day absence after his arrest for domestic battery and a 28 day stint in a rehab program.
-----------------------------------

Steinberg is back and then some

A candid, grateful though not particularly repentant Neil Steinberg returns to the Sun-Times today after a 68-day absence with a higher profile than ever.

The columnist lightly outlines his battle with alcohol and the physical altercation with his wife in late September that led to his arrest for domestic battery and his entry into a 28-day rehab program: "I could fill this space with apologies, but that's our business and not yours," he writes.

He then notes that the theme of self-pity that used to run through his column "isn't going to be possible to maintain...because I have found that I am rich in friends, many of whom I have never met."

Their words of support "truly buoyed me through the dark hours before this unexpected dawn," he writes.

His "unexpected dawn" includes an extra column a week.

Steinberg previously wrote three times a week, but an editor's note today says he will now be writing four times a week. Additionally, Sun-Times news stories no longer refer to him as a member of the paper's editorial board.

-----------------------------------

My favorite part was the quote " I could fill this space with apologies, but that's our business and not yours." This just shows what a 2 faced asshole he is. He has no problem judging other's through his column but when he finds himself the NEWS, suddenly he demands privacy.

Sorry Neil, you can't have it both ways. If you spend a career writing about others and their dirty deeds and their fall from grace, don't act so self-righteous when it happens to you.

The article can be found, along with comments at:

Maybe someone here is bitch slapping the Mayor, telling him to pay for some locking doors from his Olympic purse or this is the only way to secure the building !

Perhaps our illustrious newspaper folks could let the public know that the Dept needs 150 to 200 Police Officers a day to guard our doors with broken locks, instead of having them patrolling their neighborhoods, BECAUSE RICHIE WON'T PAY TO SECURE THE POLICE FACILITIES AND HE DOESN'T WANT THE POOR CAPS COMMUNITY PEOPLE TO FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE THERE.

HELL, it's that touchy feely attitude that set the stage for the breach in security in 003 to begin with ! ! !

Down several hundred officers, equipment that does not work causing officers to be down and not on the streets, bad ecomomy, etc. JFEB has been dealt a short hand by DA Mayo. I think you have to read Neil Steinberg's entire column to clearly understand how he has no talent as a writer and makes no sense.

The entire column is disconnected, doesn't flow well and at the end, I'm left wondering what he is actually trying to say. What is his point? Daley losing patience with Jody? This is the thought provoking theme of his column? He writes about a Mayor that has no patience with anyone, rants and raves on a daily basis and has a history of throwing everyone around him under the bus? The Suntimes pays him to write this?

Furthermore, I question why an editor would allow someone like Neil, who has had run ins with the law, weigh in on police matters?

Lastly, I think it is time for the Suntimes to get rid of Neil Steinberg and hire someone who can truly write.

By the way, I am available...

Steinberg? Oh yeah, the alcoholic wife-beater. Now I remember!

September 30, 2005. It all happened so quickly, and yet it had been building to that moment for a long time. Late at night, Steinberg was arrested on a domestic-battery charge for striking his wife—for slapping her because she said she was afraid of him and she started to call 911. He was also charged with interfering with the reporting of a domestic battery—that happened when he ripped his kitchen phone off the wall and hurled it across the room. Steinberg was immediately placed on leave from his job. He announced through the Sun-Times that he had been drinking before the domestic-battery incident, and that under court order, he would be entering an alcohol-recovery program.

Philly doesn't want J-Fed - in fact, they don't even want Ramsey. You can have McNabb - he's a has been. As for the strike-out king, Howard, he has to stay. When he's on his game he's damn good, despite all his strikeouts.

Most sit on the sidelines of life and write stories about the deeds of others. The triumphs and or failures of other men and women. Men and women who have dared to risk all. Men and women like those of the CPD. We are by no means perfect, the past examples of bad apples are proof that we are not above reproach. The average Joe Patrolman goes to work day in and day out and the most important thing we have to worry about is the partner and me go home tonight. They will say that they are the voice of the common man, that they speak for those without a voice. What similar dangers do the Neil Steinbergs or Mary Mitchell face when they sit at the desk for their eight hour tour? We asked for this job knowing the risks when we took the job. We ask for no pity, no sympathy or even thanks. The blueshirt of the CPD owes no apologies or excuses or even a response to a man the likes of Steinberg..to even respond to his dribble should be beneath anyone who has donned the full battle regalia(kudos to Jim Clemmons)of the street cop and risked EVERYTHING during an eight hour tour. Neil, my Dad used to say watch how another man makes his bread before you pass judgement on him..Neil,you great defender of the public trust, champion of the little man, and lastly you wife beater..How do your kids see you now? Sorry for the long rant. G-d bless the CPD!,

KateyKakes, we would gladly trade you Ramsey for what we've been stuck with for the past year!
At least Ramsey is a real cop.

Let's not bash Steinberg too badly for his well-publicized wife-beating in a drunken stupor incident. We all know far too many coppers, mostly male but some female as well, who have done the same thing, and worse, as I recall, not too long ago in the
009th District. At least Neil got help.

Ramsey is a choad. There's really no way to explain it without me rambling on and on. Just take a look at this link and you'll see one of the many reasons why Freckles needs to go. If Philly had any sense, they would have promoted from within. Keith Sadler would have made one hell of a PC.

Anyway, check out Chuckie trying to get his hand in the cookie jar - the POS.

Really do these Coppers make 6 figures & ask for a Public Defender when their case goes to trial like Steinberg did?
Nice try Neil, your still a stone jerkoff.

The federal judge overseeing the liquidation of Bernard Madoff's collapsed investment firm was arrested for smacking his wife around in their Park Avenue apartment, sources said yesterday.

Bankruptcy Judge James Peck, 63, was charged with attempted second-degree assault and harassment following a Saturday-afternoon tiff with his wife, Judith, 64.
