Recent Olympic Upheaval

  • When Chicago 2016 Olympics boosters make a critical sales pitch Thursday, they will have to work hard to be heard over a freshly erupting international financial dispute that could hurt their campaign.

International Olympic Committee officials this week cranked up the heat on their longstanding crusade to reduce the share of Olympic television and sponsorship money that funnels to the United States Olympic Committee, Chicago's bid partner.

The rhetoric has been searing: "It's unfair, scandalously unfair, that the government of the richest country in the world doesn't pay a dime to [Olympic] sport and we have to subsidize American athletes," Hein Verbruggen, an honorary IOC member and one of the most vocal Olympic leaders on the issue, told the Tribune on Wednesday.
Well, actually, that's what the Games are supposed to be about - amateur athletics. Government sponsorship leads to abuses like the East German steroid factories, the Red Army hockey teams, or any of a dozen other scandals. That isn't to say that America hasn't had it's share of doping and cheating and such. But at least the US had amateurs beating what were essentially paid athletes from other countries at times.

Anyway, slightly amusing that at a time when Richie is crying poor and pinching every penny in an attempt to get the Games, the IOC is attempting to steal as much American TV money and sponsorship dollars to pad their own accounts.

I will say it again... no more than 30 coppers will be present for the "informational picket" being planned... Unless you have free food and a keg of beer waiting at the hall after the rally, FOP will get a near zero turn out! (hint hint--beer and beefs go a long way with this crew!)

And I'm sure Daley would have no problem handing over a suitcase full of money to get what he needs. He's been doing it for years why would he stop now? Especially when his legacy is on the line with the Olympics. Daley has crushed this city. P.S. I'm no longer shoping in Chicago when I can park for free in the burbs and pay less tax. The parking meters are a JOKE!

I'm gonna bet Shortshanks dips into that war chest of money from privatizing venues to fund the games as a last ditch effort.

The Europeans with their inferiority complex, need to thank the American people. With out the U.S. tv audience, the Olympics would be on par with a high school track meet.

Be real. How do you figure someone who is essentially living off the government dole on an athletic scholarship is anything but a paid athlete. if he was not an athlete he would not be getting a free ride to school, free room and board in the athletic dorms, and all the other accouterments associated with college athletes these days.

You have to be a complete moron not to want the Olympics to come to Chicago. With our economic fall-out here in Chicago this is exactly what we need to boost the economic crisis. I for one will NOT be protesting and I urge you officers to NOT protest. Daley is not out to screw the police and I know there are only a few officer's that truly believe that. In this economic crisis we should all be happy we have job's. No one is getting a raise at this time, but if we get the Olympics things will get better for us. I know I am not alone when I say I am PRO CHICAGO OLYMPICS!

OH YEAH, LIKE ANY CHICAGO REALLY WANTS THE OLYMPICS HERE. YOU THINK TRAVEL TIMES AND TRAFFIC AND FINDING PARKING IS BAD NOW. YEAH OKAY. IT WILL BE A NIGHTMARE FOR THOSE COUPLE MONTHS THAT THE OLYMPICS ARE HERE.

CRIME; THE CRIMINALS ARE SALIVATING ON THE MEIR IDEA OF ALL THOSE POTENTIAL VICTIMS COMING TO CHICAGO.

POLICE MANPOWER; SHIT WE'RE 2,000+ SHORT NOW WITH ANOTHER 900 OR SO MORE SHORT THIS YEAR ALONE IN 2009. WE'RE SUPPOSE TO HANDLE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF MORE PEOPLE COMING TO THIS CITY. YEAH OKAY!

NO BODY WANTS THE OLYMPICS ANYWAY. THE CITY'S SO CALLED "VOTE" TAKEN WAS A FIX. ANY TAX PAYER WITH A BRAIN DOESN'T WANT THIS HEAR. WE'LL BE 3/4 OF A BILLION IN DEBT AFTER ITS ALL SAID AND DONE AND WHO WILL BE LEFT WITH THE BILL, ALL OF US THAT HAVE TO LIVE IN THIS CRAPPY CITY. LIKE WE'RE NOT PAYING OUT OF ASSES ENOUGH AS IT IS.

GOD I HATE MAYOR DALEY.

To: Richie Daley's bodyguards and others who are secretly meeting with the feds.

TELL THE TRUTH! Don't hold anything back.

Think of about this this, on the last day that Obama is President he may pardon Shortshanks, and Toddler and Blago and who knows what Democrat for their political crimes and thefts.

Do you think he will pardon you for purjury and obstruction of justice?

Not likely, and I doubt Shortshanks will bother to be grateful to you for anything. So tell the truth now.

The Olympics have been a joke since the Rome games.

All about money, and egos. You know things are fucked up when a guy like Avery Brundage takes over the IOC and repeatedly refuses to reinstate Jim Thorpes Olympic medals from the 1912 Summer Olympics.

I'm sure it had nothing to do with Brundage getting his ass kicked by Thorpe in the pentathalon and decatholon during those same games.
