More Layoffs? Bigger Deficit?

  • With a growing budget deficit, Mayor Daley said Saturday that the city is talking with unions in an attempt to avoid layoffs through other concessions.

"We're trying to work this out," he said. "They've been at the table. They've been talking to us about all these issues."

The Chicago Sun-Times reported last week that union leaders had been told the city might have to lay off 1,600 workers -- but no sworn police officers or firefighters -- unless organized labor agrees to another round of givebacks to eliminate a potential $300 million shortfall.

Daley, Stroger and Blago all chose the worst time to push through the hikes that saddled us with the highest tax rates in the nation. A business and economy killer in the midst of a recession. Why didn't the government tighten its belt in the face of declining revenues and promote a pro-business atmosphere that would make Illinois a job magnet instead of the equivalent of job-kryptonite?

Blago is out of a job, facing jail. The Toddler is in major trouble with his poll numbers. Can Shortshanks be as vulnerable as the rest? He seems increasingly out of touch and headed around the bend.

Hey, we can dream, can't we?

Sure, but the real question is 'Can we act?'.

What kills me is that I saw it with my own eyes and ears. The 0600 news on Saturday morning, dickhead said that the city has already lost 80 million per year in revenue. Nobody else seems to have caught that but me. We all know that he sold all of the city revenue for the Olympics, which (hopefully) we won't get anyway. But what good does that do the citizens of chicago when the city has no other means of generating revenue? What will become of this city if no one living here can afford to pay for that loss of city income?

SCC and guests,
I was going over some figures and was thinking how stupid Daley is by angering the police department by not giving them a contract, etc.. and in turn them not producing for the city.

Simply put, lets say there are 4000 policemen on the street on a day and each of them writes just $200 worth of tickets (very very easy to do) your looking at close to a million dollars in one day. And if kept up for a week it would be 5.6 million dollars in just one week of revenue for the city.

By having us unhappy and the feeling of us AGAINST the city (mayor, aldermen..) they are losing huge! At a time when they are in dire need of us to go out and work and generate revenue, they've got the whole department so fed up the activity is almost nonexistant where i work. It's simply answer your jobs and that's it. How easy would it be to just give us a contract, try to make us somewhat content and in turn you'll make back that 100 fold in revenue.

By the way, aren't we the only city department that actually pays for itself and then some in the revenue brought in?

I just don't get it? We have the highest taxes in the nation. The mayor has sold several of the cities assests for huge amounts of money! We have 50 "part time" alderman in chicago with huge salaries that they vote themselves and we have no money? Why? How much waste and corruption can we take? People need to wake up and vote these scum bag politicians out! Texas is run by conservatives and they have a budget surplus. We need to take a look at change in chicago. Texas has low crime, the citizens carry guns, and they enforce the death penalty.

The only problem with trying to reform government by shrinking it,i.e. reducing the number of wards from 50 to 25, reducing the County districts from 17 to 9, eliminating unnecessary township government, is that you need the support of the very people whose jobs you wish to eliminate. The legislators, federal, state, county or city will never vote to do anything which might shrink or eliminate their influence over lucrative contracts and benefits.
A true grass roots movement is necessary but that takes an enormous amount of time and effort and support from the media. The lack of media coverage of the tea parties and the negativity of the coverage there was shows just how hard it is to mount an effective grass roots movement.
If law enforcement personnel from all over the state banded together, it could be a force to be reckoned with.

Got rid of insurance agents that were getting commissions for doing nothing because they knew someone in the vilage. Changed banks that were allowed to have village accounts bearing zero per cent interest (for the same reason). Even found a million dollar bond laying in an unlocked filing cabinet that could have been cashed by anyone. They haven't raised taxes in the past four years.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks that Chicago residents are being taxed to the limit by this state, county and city.

Illinois has more layers of taxing authorities, Boards, Commissions, Councils, Legislatures, Congresses, etc. THAN ANY OTHER STATE in this country.

Couple that with a totally corrupt band of thieving politicians and revenue sources and expenditures that are hidden from the public and all you hear is "we're going broke".

Even when the contract is settled, unless Daley becomes transparent with the TIFS and the billions of dollars that he reaped by selling off the cities revenue sources, I have no real desire to return to being his tool to screw the working stiffs of Chicago.

Screw Daley and his friends and family. I'm tired of paying for and supporting them in the lifestyle they have become accustomed to.

Don't forget about the OEMC. The civilain dispatchers and calltakers are also working without a contract and that place brings in millions of $$$ annually through the telephone tax. At $2.50 for every single landline, cellphone, and business line registered with a city address its in the millions. Yet they have been without a contract also; they receive no ongoing or additional training; have outdated equipment and are understaffed. But, like CPD, the city is looking for more concessions despite that entity being one of the top self funded and revenue generating departments. It makes one wonder when enough is enough.

People are so politically correct. There is nothing wrong with what this officer did. Police need to vent to deal with seeing murder scenes on a regular basis. What about the 1st amendment you liberal politically correct people? I do not see any outrage and calls for people's careers to be ended when they bash the police and use profanity against police. Chicago scuttles $2.5B Midway Airport lease deal

CHICAGO - Chicago officials say talks calling on a $2.5 billion deal to lease Midway Airport to private investors have collapsed because of the economy.

The deal could have made Midway the first major airport to go private under a federal pilot program.

Chicago chief financial officer Gene Saffold said Monday that the city and private investors terminated a 99-year lease agreement because the global financial crunch has made it impossible for the investors to secure funding.

Saffold says the city of Chicago still will keep $126 million in earnest money already paid by investors as part of the agreement.

Hey jerk off, like others have said, most of chose this job before "times were bad." We had to deal with freinds and family asking us why in the world we wanted to be the police and get paid a lowly civil servant's salary.

Most of joined b/c we wanted to help people, plain and simple. We wanted to lead our lives in a noble way and not be slaves to the almighty dollar. We knew we would never be rich by taking the job and would struggle financially if we had a decent sized family, but we took it anyway.

Also, i, along with almost every person in my academy graduating class have degrees from various colleges, some even law degrees. Some of us took decent sized pay CUTS to come on this job.

You had every chance to sign up and take the test to join the cpd. But, most likely you were rolling in the dough riding the great economy at the time and didn't think twice about serving your fellow man. Or maybe you were just too scared to join and didn't want to risk your life everyday for an ungreatful city (which i can not critisize you for).
Whatever your reason for NOT joining, don't for one second come on here and try to make us feel bad for you b/c we have a secure job right now and you may not.

When times were good for you and everyone else, people were laughing at us and what little we make. Although i'm not laughing at the possibility that you may not have a job i certianly don't feel bad if you lost your 100+K salary job and weren't smart enough to save anything.

In a year or two the economy will be back up and everyone will go back to thinking we are stupid for being the police and laughing at our paychecks once again. That's ok with us though b/c on our death beds we will die knowing that we at least tried to make a difference in this world and we didn't live our lives with money as our focus.
