Hilarious Channel 5 Report
- Taste of Chicago revelers will see more police, and for the first time they'll have to enter at security-heavy entrances in a comprehensive plan Supt. Jody Weis unveiled Thursday designed to quell the violence that landed him on the hot seat last year.
[...] "Folks will feel very safe because they're going to see a police officer on almost every block, and in some instances 20 feet, so we're going to have a very hard presence in terms of letting people know we have a lot of officers in place," he said.
At least the City is acknowledging last year's Taste was screwed up beyond belief. But Channel 5 did a report on this same thing Friday night. And in the background shot behind the reporter standing in the middle of the Taste, describing how tight security was going to be? Three or four jagoffs "throwing up for the nation." We just about died laughing. Channel 5 has thus far refrained from posting this piece.
The fact is, even with secured entrances and high visibility presence, gang bangers and ne'er-do-wells are going to get in. And depending on how they feel like behaving, they are going to cause trouble. There's too much to cover and it's too open. It's big and quite frankly, it has gotten too large to effectively police.

security at the gate is a joke. i saw in the taste a shit head walking a pitbull, countless idiots on bikes and beer bottles all around. im bringing my cooler with beers tomorrow along with my dog for the ladies to pet.

We always had screening on the way in, and barrels of confiscated alcoholic beverages to prove it. This only fell apart in the last couple of years.

We had 8 sectors to cover today and 8 officers to cover them. By about 1400 hrs each sector had approx. 190-250 people occupying that space. Bear in mind that each of these sectors overlap. 8 officers for the stretch of Jackson between Michigan and the Lake. This includes two sound-stages, the Petrillo and the Best Buy stage. Does that sound safe to you? The commander admitted to everyone at roll call that we don't have enough help, and said that last year's fiasco was the fault of "not having aggressive enough officers." What a douche.

Either....A. Uniform would be too dangerous in a potentially dangerous situation
B. Looking to bust coppers
Maybe there is a reason above my meager thoughts...any ideas?
I went there a few years ago with my son and wife, in the morning mind you before pookie, tay tay and june bug get out of bed. There were still a few shitheads around so we left in the afternoon, and I got the feeling it would go up for grabs that night... was right of course.

Personally, I found the Taste to be way over priced and not worth the trouble. This was before the gangs made their presence. Now, I'd rather take the family to a nice restaurant or food court with clean rest rooms and civilized people. I think Mumbai can easily happen here. You know where it can't happen? Utah, Florida, Arizona, Michigan, Vermont, Alaska, Indiana, Idaho, Colorado, Texas (should be first on the list) - and any other state with CCW.
Step 1 is to increase the number of police officers and make sure you guys are paid well. Step two is to make sure guys like me who don't break any laws other than slightly exceeding our underposted speed limits, have the right to defend themselves and their families against these assholes that multiply like rats. The thing is, if we just took some of the corruption and olympics money and gave it to you guys, we'd have more police. If we just allowed CCW, which doesn't cost the state/city anything (in fact, they earn some money in fees), crime will plummet just like it has in every other state that enacted it.
And yet...we stand behind the fact that 'guns cause crime.' O rly?
i would never take my family down to the folks and peoples taste of shitcago---- pack up the van and go to summerfest in milwaukee--- look up www.summerfest.com---- multiple music venues with top notch artists in a nice clean lakefront park--- word of caution-- one day is free entry--avoid this day at all costs--- milwaukee also has a lot of "democrats" residing there-- if you stay overnight, downtown hotels have shuttle service from hotel to park and back via public transportation for small fee.. believe me, if you go north you will never go back to the taste again....

I go to Naperville ribfest, great music on July 02 for example they have the band "HeardT on stage for 10 bucks, and great food, nom animals it is well worth it! the taste is nothing hut a gangbangers paradise "freaknik"!

Went to Taste of Joliet this past weekend. A lot of 80's bands (Joan Jett, Berlin to name a few). Not a bad price and not many shitheads around. There were Joliet police everywhere.
Next weekend, I'll be off to Naperville's Ribfest. Definite family atmosphere.
There are things to do out of this stinking city.
Why bother to make any arrests? They have off duty coppers working for them, I hope that the coppers working the fest take some pride this year and don't take any Shit from these little gang bangers. Last year was the worst year downtown, the cops lost it, it was an embarrasment that should have been televised by every news station, but that would look like racism, face it the only people acting up were the young black males, I even had black men with their families shake their heads in utter discuss. I cant' wait for the Olympics, dude will clean up, I can promise you this, if the city is like it is now, the visitors will be fair game.

They can drive in from Bridgeview, clapping and singing songs, or simply take the bus from "the incubator of terrorism" over at Devon and Western -- "Mohammed Sheikh Agarwal Drive," or whatever the City of Chicago has wisely labeled it with those "auxiliary" street-name signs.

Why should CPD do all ToC security ??
Let the hired security handle patrol of the grounds, with CPD there for arrests.
In general groups of 5-6 officers were posted in spots chatting. The usual "special" beer vendor worked Butler field.
Blue tee-shirt security did chase away bucket boys. And this years music lineup is lame.
A bunch of people from the old old gang crimes units worked off-duty security for that outfit. They've been around forever. They were good guys and paid well. Get to know them, then you can work for them instead of part-time for daley. They run a tight ship.

This is not as far fetched as you might think! With the city on the news in every country in the world over the last year due to this being Obama's hometown, a lot of attention is now focused on Chicago. A handful of turban heads with AK's and a few home made hand grenades tossed into the crowd would make Mumbai look like a picnic. If they did it right, they could escape into the mayhem with ease.
Can't there be a dress code - no clothing in specific color combinations known to be favored by gangs, no baggy pants hanging down past butt cracks, no other clothes/shoes/accessories denoting gang affiliation, etc? Or is that considered racial profiling?

I worked there on Sunday. Two guns were already recovered during the week before 28JUN09. Also a PSMV arrest.
