Media Discovers Correlation

And since it's from the New York Times, you know it has to be rock solid!
  • Seven homicides in New York City. None connected in any way but this: They happened during the summer months, when the temperatures rise, people hit the streets, and New York becomes a more lethal place.

There were more homicides in September than in any other month last year: 52. Next highest was August, with 51. Variations, of course, exist. There were 48 homicides last March, for instance.

Still, the prime time for murder is clear: summertime.
Wow. We're speechless. All those years and decades of police work and observing the human condition in all its stages, and we finally hear the truth from the New York Times.

Its hilarious that some people actually purchase these rags, read them, and think that they're more in tune with the world around them. The media got their boy elected (Obama bin Obama), if that ain't proof enough.

I read the article. "The Onion" couldn't have come up with anything funnier!

The two reporters, ANDREW W. LEHREN and AL BAKER, wrote the article amazed as though they discovered the cure for cancer. They were SINCERELY amazed more murders occur when it's warm out!

Life's tough when you have a turnip for a brain.

I thought about spoofing this article in my blog. But I don't think I could write anything funnier than these two reporters.

SCC, thanks for the good laugh!

a partial truth.
i'm sure some observations were omitted due to their flying in the face of the belief system of the reporter.
but a good start to be sure.

Hold up, lets not jump to conclusions. We better fund a study to verify these findings. I'm sure daley or stroger have some relatives who need some work. Dont worry, shouldnt take more than 5 years and cost only around $10 milllion.

That's why they, the bosses, decided to put the tach, gangs, burglary and everyone else in uniform. They know that.

Yeah but unfortunately NYC doesn't have a balloon headed, beady eyed, feline lovin' FEEB at the helm of some pretty lethal specialized units! Our saviour.

Paper: Detroit Police Underreport Homicides
June 18, 2009 1:26 PM

ABC’s Tahman Bradley reports from Chicago:

A Detroit News review of police and medical examiner records found that the Detroit police department is “systematically undercounting homicides.” Detroit police routinely reclassify homicides as justifiable, or deaths by suicide, or accident in annual reports to the FBI, and by doing so, the department has falsely lowered the city’s homicide rate, the paper found.

I think it's like how at the start of every football season there's a story about how you have to run the ball, or at the beginning of baseball season there's a story about how important a set up man is.

It's the start of murder season, so you get the same story.

A couple of days ago the NYT published a fascinating map of all homicides over a number of years. You can look at them by race, gender, type (stranger etc) and age. The stats will be familiar to all Chicago cops but are enlightening to the general public. Suffice it to say blacks are far more represented as killers and victims than their percentage of the population.

I actually sent that story to SCC from his FAVORITE newspaper. For all I know he may have found it on his own while eating a bran muffin and drinking a cup of Thai tea at some Lincoln Park Java house.

All joking aside real academic studies of these issues can help with police deployment. By real I mean studies that don't end up paying the relative of a machine hack.

The large drop in crime in NYC is partially based on academic studies such as "broken windows" along with accountable leadership.

Of course since the Chicago Police Department and City Government in general have few "leaders", or "bosses" if you prefer, it ain't gonna happen here.

How often do any of the higher exempts get held accountable?

How often are our elected officials held accountable by anyone not named Fitzgerald?

It's warm and humid tonight.

Want to place an illegal wager on the number of homicides this weekend?

I kid. Perhaps a friendly wager of some jelly beans or perhaps a cup of java.
