What Missile Shield?

We'll bet the citizens of Hawaii feel so much safer today knowing that the Obama Administration is declining to fund research in to ballistic missile defense:
  • North Korea may launch a long-range ballistic missile towards Hawaii on American Independence Day, according to Japanese intelligence officials.

The missile, believed to be a Taepodong-2 with a range of up to 4,000 miles, would be launched in early July from the Dongchang-ni site on the north-western coast of the secretive country.

Intelligence analysts do not believe the device would be capable of hitting Hawaii's main islands, which are 4,500 miles from North Korea.

"Not capable yet" should be the quote. But every launch brings new data to increase range and function of the missile systems. The Pentagon is worried:
  • Gates, speaking at the same news conference, said the Pentagon is concerned about the possibility of a North Korean missile launch "in the direction of Hawaii."

Gates told reporters at the Pentagon he has sent the military's ground-based mobile missile system to Hawaii, and positioned a radar system nearby. The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system is designed to shoot down ballistic missiles in their last stage of flight.

Seems that a number of challenges are being tossed our way. But since the US has already telegraphed a non-response, we don't see any of this boding well for US influence.

North Korea has always been our greatest threat. There are many ways they can attack while we're watching the front door (hawaii) for trouble, they'll come thru the rear. Kinda the way daley does.

If the Norks launch anything in the general direction of the sovereign territory of our nation, BO better respond with something stronger than another fucking sanction or just some more "um's and uh's" during a non-scripted press conference. If he is unable/unwilling to respond appropriately (i.e. at least a bloody nose in response to an act of aggression by the Norks), than we will be inviting more acts of terrorism. Our enemies will view us as weak, just like when we were seen to be weak after no response to Black Hawk Down, USS Cole, or the embassy bombings. Hell, the mujahadeen thought they were the victors over the USSR in Afghanistan because they never knew the involvement of the US and Israel in their successful repulsion of the Red Army.

Don't fuck this up Obama, you showed balls when you had those snipers snuff a few pirates, but this is the big leagues, kiddo.

Missile defense (SDI) is just a Reagan-era pipedream. It's like trying to hit a bullet with another bullet. Even when the tests have been rigged to work (for example, when the incoming missile carries no decoys and its path is already known to the defense system), SDI has failed to intercept. It is even less likely to ever succeed in a real-world scenario. The project should have been killed off years ago. For all that you complain about Daley wasting taxpayer money, the Pentagon has wasted a lot more on SDI.

Actually, ignoring North Korea isn’t a poor foreign policy decision. Whenever they stir the pot it is always because they are looking for a hand out and they usually get it too. Their economy is completely dependent on China for it’s survival and therefore usually China keeps them on a leash. However, the world is changing and now that China is a huge trading partner with us, when North Korea pulls a stunt they are also affecting their friends the Chinese too. With the amount of American debt that China now owns it would be foolish for them to interfere in our economy in a negative way and a nuclear blast in the heart of Hawaii would certainly have such an affect. Therefore I don’t see China allowing something as extreme as this happening and if North Korea tries to go rogue from their only friend I think we’ll see China making some military action of their own against them with our blessing.

It's called the Aegis Anti-missile system. It works.

The Pentagon is not going to publicly state all of its operations for obvious reasons.

A lot of weapon systems which get proposed are actually unnecessary, but are the result of lobbying by the industry for contracts that would make Mayor Daley shed a tear of envy.

Are you serious? The ships Captain had orders to only take action if the hostage was in danger. He declared the hostage to be in danger and gave the order, not BHO. The only ones with balls on our side were the Navy personnel on scene.

On a side note, these Koreans could save me a bundle as my wife has wanted to go to Hawaii

Reagan era pipe dream? The Soviets were very upset about SDI or "Star Wars." Why do you think that was? Maybe because they felt it would work thereby rendering their missle threat to us moot. As in any new technology there is trial and error. How many experiments did Edison try before he got the lightbulb right? New versions of lightbulb still being developed. Just keep up the liberal nonsense, you'll feel all superior.

You should do more research, sparky. The US Navy used SDI computer programs to reprogram several missiles to shoot down that errant satellite a while back. The "bullet hit another bullet." Leaving our country defenseless against rogue or accidental missile launches is beyond stupid, it's criminal.

Handling North Korea isnt as easy a situation as it looks. North Koreas closest ally is China. Obama isnt sure how to handle them- so it would appear.

Its actually a simple thing to keep chinas hands off North Korea. Since China holds so much USA paper all Obama has to do is tell china that he will issue an Execuitive order making all Chinese held paper in the USA worthless and that would shut China up for a while.

As one blogger has previous stated,N.Korea is only stirring the pot to get attention.Kim Jong Il and his corrupt government are on the verge of starvation. With the exception of some exportation of minerals N.Korea has nothing to offer the world. They manufacture nothing of value, their military though large,is antiquated. In conventional warfare U.S.forces along with the S.Korean military could defeat the North with their better armed better supplied troops. The non agression pact China has with the north is the only thing protecting these thugs from total ahnialation by our forces. If they are stupid enough to threaten Hawaii not only will they suffer our wrath, but that of the Japanese who also have a well trained well equiped military.NONE of this would bode well for China if this were to esclate to that level. They are too financially intertwined with America and other western countries.I seriouusly doubt that the Chinese would let the N.Koreans jeapordise all they have invested by starting a war in the Pacific.China at this point is simply watching to see how America and the west react to the norths"sabre rattling."If Kim Jong Il can hoodwink Obama and his adminitration into giving financial and material aid to the north by pulling these tricks, the Chinese will not intervene. They'll simply chuckle to themselves at what suckers we are. With Hillary as Sec of State I doubt that will happen. She still remembers what happened when President Clinton and Secretary Albright tried to negotiate with the north in good faith as did President Bush and Secretay Rice.By not overreacting President Obama is pursuing the right strategy.I say call their bluff. To the blogger that said the North Koreans are our biggest threat, you're wrong. At least in the conventional sense. The thing we have most to fear from starving, bankrupt N.Korea is that they will attempt to sell what technology and materials they have to the highest bidder namely middleastern terrorist organizations who ARE our biggest threat.Pakistan is the nation we need to watch in that respect.

OhBaMa just issued everyone in Hawaii black bomb vests to protect them.

What he should have done was issue an order that if any detection of a missle was launched, and there was any possible chance that it might hit any friendly target, the US would fire on North Korea and make it disappear forever.

We are largely responsible for this. I did some looking on the web not too long ago, and saw how we were supporting North Korea with massive "humanitarian" food aid while they concentrated their resources on building hardened underground factories for high-tech missile guidance systems. There are loads of reports and photos of this kind of thing, lists of the factories and their locations, etc.

The North Korean army is a cohesive, monoracial machine -- like an army of robots. Those guys are as hard as nails. They can live on almost nothing, are all trained in Tae Kwon Do, and can very probably kick the ass of the present-day American soldier but good in any face-to-face business.

It won't help us that we put black berets on the file clerks...

It is pointless to debate whether the Aegis missile shield will shoot down an incoming warhead. If this missile is launched against US territory and falls short, all it would take is one ICBM or SLBM with MIRV to take out the known location fixed launch sites and support facilities.

But...

1.) We knew exactly where that satellite was and could plot its course accurately -- not the same as tracking an ICBM.

2.) More importantly, the satellite did not employ decoys or other countermeasures like a real missile would.
