"Fire" at HQ

When we first heard about it, we hoped that most of the building burned down, the sagging concrete floors had collapsed and at least some of the deadwood had burned. Then we heard it was just confined to one room. Then we heard it wasn't even a fire.

But "just a glitch?"
  • A glitch in a computer control room left Chicago Police Headquarters without phone or Internet access for several hours Saturday afternoon.

    Previous reports said there was a small fire in the room, but Fire Media Affairs Dir. Larry Langford said crews found no burned cables or any indication of a fire.

    Crews responded at about 11:30 a.m. Saturday after an automatic extinguisher from the computer glitch alerted fire officials to police headquarters at 3510 S. Michigan Ave., Langford said.
Someone from HQ can correct us if need be, but isn't this like the second or third occurrence of the halon fire extinguisher systems going off in the past year or so? And it always seems to take out the entire system? Where's the redundancy? Why do we spend so much on technology, then don't spend any money on what's necessary to (A) maintain the system and (B) have some backup feature to maintain operations? According to our e-mails...
  • no one downtown was willing to authorize paper arrests for 3 hours;
  • dozens, maybe hundreds of officers citywide were stuck sitting on prisoners in Districts and held off the streets, affecting response times and back up
All we can figure is the hamsters running the wheels of the Department Intranet had a wildcat strike and refused to keep running in circles for mere cheese. Shortshanks is going to lay off 20 hamsters Monday morning in an effort to break their union.

Daley's Mental Health Blunder Continues ...

by Angela Caputo on November 06, 2009 - 11:39am

This past spring, a new $16 million system implemented by the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) turned out to be so flawed that patient mental health bills weren’t submitted to the state for six months in 2008. This so-called "glitch" led to a loss of more than $1million in state funding and almost resulted in the closure down four clinics on the city's South Side. Back in July we took Daley administration officials at their word when they said that the problems were fixed.

Big mistake.........

Haig Tells of Theories on Erasure
By George Lardner Jr.

"White House chief of staff Alexander M. Haig Jr. said yesterday he and White House lawyers had discussed fears that "some sinister force" erased one of President Nixon's subpoenaed Watergate tapes....... Testifying in federal court here, Haig told of what he called the "devil theories" about the controversial 18 1/4-minute gap in the recording, which has yet to be explained."

No computer means they can't send me nonsense. Did everyone forget how to write assignments down on a pad of paper with a pencil? Not all that long ago we had to remember where everyone else was in the district in case they needed help. A pad of paper was my computer. Now with all this great technology the officers complain more than ever.

I make do with what they give me. They give me little or nothing, that is what they get back, no problem.

GPS will have show driving around my district in an 8 hours maze of concentric circles. Lot's of luck. No computer, no problem, that just means I make them repeat the assignment three times, and the event number.

Use your head, make them pay. One way or the other. PO's can and always have been able to fuck this department to a standstill. We still have that power. When the new ratigns system starts an avalanche of grievances and unfair labor practice complaints will bury MLAS. Go ahead, rate me, see how that works out.

Treat officers fairly with honestly, dignity and honor? Oh no, not that! Better to use a hammer, the CPD management way.

So -
Being unable to generate a report because RD numbers couldn't be issued did not affect CPD functions?

Being unable to process and fingerprint arrestees for several hours, requiring officers to babysit an increasing number of offenders - TAKING MORE AND MORE POLICE OFF THE STREET - did not affect CPD functions?

WLS channel 7, have you not learned to verify a story? How about you ask someone other than the people who have a vested interest in covering up how bad it really was? Taking the easy way out is NOT considered reporting; it's lazy and it's sloppy.

Someone needs to check on this. On the door to the room(s) where the Halon System is installed, see if the red sign states it is Halon, Halon 1301 or FM-200 or some other agent.

Judging from the fact that the system seems to have dumped a couple of times, either due to improper maintenance or a server overheating in which case it would be improper maintenance to the cooling systems,,,anyways,,,

Exposure to Halon systems could have a very serious health effect on personnel,,,

or if you are a member of the media, someone who is incarcerated could be injured.

Yes.....

AIRA is still down, but preliminary reports from the field indicate several automotive, light-truck, panel van, and sport-utility front, side, and rear windows in the greater Garcia Ridge area were damaged by what appear to be a blunt instruments and/or ballistic projectiles.....

Department of Revenue agents have been out in force yesterday and today aggressively canvasing the area for all signs of cracked windows and hazardous dilapidated vehicles.....

The Area Three Theft/Robbery/Burglary Incident Team is taking the lead on this one, suggesting to area residents that they park their vehicles in a garage or other enclosed structure until further notice.....

Anyone persons with information regarding the above incident(s) are advised to keep it to themselves.

What was more amazing was the number of manpower used on weekends and nights. This particular Saturday? One Patrolman, one Cadet! That meant that any employees could not park in lot cause parking lot booth was unmanned, and they had to ring a doorbell at parking lot gate that went unanswered. When the fire department showed up I wondered who exactly got escort the fire dept and who covered the front desk lobby? Cadet???? HQ Building Security was once manned at 10 Officers on any given watch or day. All entrances and various floors were not only covered, but toured throughout the day and evening. But lets continue to more with less.

Haven't you heard? We gold stars got together and decided that in order to elevate the morale the only solution was to let everyone work when and where they want. That's right, tired of the deuce, just go to work in 22 on your prefenence of watch. In addition we are going to the Supe and tell him that unless he gets the Mayou to agree to a 10 percent a year raise, retroactive to the expiration of the contract, we will resign enmass. There is also going to be a special toll on suburbanites entering the city that will pay for a complet new fleet of vehicles within the next 3 months. There should be enough money to enable everyone to have a take home car. Each sworn person will also be given an Apple computer that can be used for personal stuff as well as being used while on duty. Not only that We have petitioned the Legislature to change the law requiring city residency. Oh, and further, just to show that our hearts are in the right place, we will take a reduction in salary to the level of a Probationary Officer. You can see how much we like the gold stars. We will also keep paying into the pension fund at our exempt rate, but will only take our pension based on our Probationary Officer salary. At least half of us will also return to the rank of Police Officer to help alleviate the shorage, but we also insisted that at least 2000 be hired during 2010.

We firmly believe that in spite of these positive steps most of you will still bitch. We tried.

At least half of us will also return to the rank of Police Officer to help alleviate the shorage, but we also insisted that at least 2000 be hired during 2010.

We firmly believe that in spite of these positive steps most of you will still bitch. We tried.

off topic: to the capt on midnites in 016th dist will you do everyone a favor and start your roll call before 20 min after the hour. while you are talking for another 20mins will are in a rapp and the cars don't hit the streets for another 20 min.. the tax payers should get the police to their calls in a timely fashion.
-----------------------
This also happening at my south side district as well. Roll call should be on the hour! 'nuff said.

Hire some detectives soon. Over 80 car windows broken last night in Garcia ridge and absolutely no follow up WTF. Thousand and thousands of dollars in damage.

where was the ever-lovin' 8th district? What good is having all those officers living out here.

Area one always on fire 85 degrees working conditions wasted money on heat
I guess its better to make working conditions and personell miserable than turning down the heat.
***********************************
Thats nothing! Come to 023 . Seriously at least 85 degrees in roll call and locker rooom!

///////////////////

Same with homan square. Its a sauna year round.

////////////////////
Add 015 to the list. 82 degrees on the 1st floor the last 3 days. Hotter in processing room.
Too bad there are no windows to open in these new buildings.

if all the gold stars got together did they manage to find one set of balls among the whole lot of them---- you are right about coppers bitching about everything, that will never change, it is part of the job description for police officers......

Haven't you heard? We gold stars got together and decided that in order to elevate the morale the only solution was to let everyone work when and where they want.

Us blue shirts have all gotten together as well and took a general consensus that we would like to help each of you shove your gold stars up your asses in a twisting motion!
Some even have donated tubes of BenGay for each of you to rub on your knees. Also boxes of tissues are included to wipe off the corners of your mouths. Because we all know sometimes its hard to swallow!

Everyone relax...the bubbling Halon room was the best HQ could do for Halloween this year. So a few kids are still missing somewhere in the building, so what! It just so happens they were giving it one last blast before they tore it all down 'till next year. You just have to work within the resources you've got.

Hey doofus ... don't you read anything but your own posts ??? FYI the 008th district 1st watch was leading the city in arrests ... including the 10 sector ... night before last 008 caught a couple guys smashing windows out of cars ... the night they smashed the windows out of the cars in Garcia Ridge the probable offender was located and Identified ... but for you non working police , you have to have a witness / victim willing to prosecute not just someone worried about getting their RD # for the insurance
