Recruiting from Shelters

  • The Chicago Police Department today introduced its newest narcotics police dog and said he is intended to be the first of many canines drafted from animal shelters into police work.

Pantera, a 16-month-old black Labrador retriever, was rescued by police from the Chicago Ridge Animal Welfare League in May and underwent "a rigorous curriculum of narcotics detection techniques," police said.

He took to the streets last month with the Organized Crime Division and has since recovered evidence in drug cases and assisted in executing search warrants.
Inspired, J-Fed announced a new recruiting drive:

New applicants are being snatched right out of the soup line at the Pacific Garden Mission and promised food and booze money. The mayor claims it will save $124 billion over the next 2 years and pay for another 822 miles of flower medians.

Just say "PGM" to the polish winos in 025 and they quake with fear.

It's a long walk back to their urine soaked haunts, and you know - the piss-bums have a rigorous schedule to maintain. They can't be inconvenienced by a trip to PGM.

Let's hope Pantera doesn't haul ass every time it thunders during a rainstorm.

And is "Pantera" the name that this pooch came with? Just curious, because with a name like that, I envision this dog being formerly owned by some pothead, heavy metal-type slacker that resides in his parent's suburban basement. If so, Pantera should excel in his new profession.

So, this makes Pantera more experienced than Jody! He's probably smarter as well!

Based upon the quality of the PPOs turned out by the Academy for the last several years; one would think that the department had been taking applications from the residents at Pasific Garden for years now.

And the Tribune story said that it only cost the Department $98.00 to adopt Pantera. What about the man hours it took the officer to go out and look for a dog to make sure that it qualifies and has the drive to make a good narcotics canine. What about the vet fees to ensure that the dog is healthy. X-rays, shots and making sure that the dog has no major physical problems. What about the background of the dog? How was he or she treated by the previous owner? Does the dog have any emotional problems? Is it a biter? There is no guarantee with a dog from these shelters. You spend hundreds of hours testing over 100 dogs to get one that can be acceptable to use as a Narcotics canine. So there is no such thing as just $98 for a dog. The Department started to purchase dogs from reliable breeders over 10years ago because they come with guarantees, and do have the drive, and because in the long run, it's still cheaper.

Pacific Garden Mission is the only reason 001 still has any sort of crime index. South Loop is now nothing but yuppies with the Ickes gone. Home to our fearless leader. (unless flying eggs are heading his way) Got the good ol' Mayors Detail to relieve every night for their 3.5 hour long lunch. Packs of clueless liberals roaming the streets ready at a moments notice to tell you how to do your job. Christmas is almost hear! Gonna need a car to guard that precious tree 24/7. Good times.

Two points. Joking about recruiting at a mission opens up opportunities for cracks about these new recruits already being trained in driving DUI. But on the other hand, comparing Jody's police intuition to Pantera's gives me the opportunity to point out that the dog is too smart to relieve himself on his officer, something that that idiot Jody does with regularity.

$98 for the dog and 8 weeks of training? BS!!! dog was pick up in Jan. and hit the street last month.

$98 for shelter dog plus officer month salary $5,000 x 8 months for training to get the dog somewhat decent = $40,098 for a narcotic dog

$4,000 for imported dog plus officer month salary $5,000 x 3.5 months for training = $21,000 for a narcotic/patrol dog

What is Peterson thinking???

Speaking of Recruiting from shelters". Does anyone have an idea why 1123 2nd watch "RC" is being assigned a partner each day? Could it be she is "Skarred"? Or is it that she really does not know how to be "Da Police"? To all who have to rotate working with her beware, she is a walking CR NUMBER!

"Pantera" is the classification for "Big Cats" such as lions, tigers, etc. So of course leave it up to this department to give a dog a cat's name, just like calling an FBI agent "Chicago Police Superintendent".

i was hospitalized seven times for alcoholism before I joined the CPD I went into the academy after seven years of sobriety, and have had a respectable career, still active. I worked day labor in uptown, etc. and gained some humility I am sure I am not alone. I am among several police officers who were skid row stumble bumbs at one time in their life. Seriously, they might find some good material to recruit from in those shelters. Some of those transients will fight to cover your back.

Hey dumb fuck, the officer would have gotten the salary anyway. In economics that's called a sunk cost. Meaning the only costs over the price of the adoption are food and shelter. And the shelter was already there.

Some guys will complain about anything, even if they have no idea what they are talking about.

Head back to the shine box junior.

Also, homeless can register to vote

incumbent alderthieves, Crook County
Board President, etc.
