Send in the Guard!

  • Over the weekend, the violence in Chicago dropped dramatically. But that's not good enough for a South Side minister who wants the National Guard to help patrol Chicago's streets.

Marble Rock Baptist Church Minister Gregory Daniels and his supporters marched outside Chicago police headquarters on Monday. "I have seen Chicago police go to a scene and get shot at," Rev. Daniels said. "They need some policing here other than Chicago police."

Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis disagrees. He points out that the number of people shot and killed dropped over the weekend after a bloody 24 hours spanning Thursday and Friday. And he noted that he had 36 officers at one recent shooting scene, and someone decided to start shooting again anyways.

And once again, the temperature needs to get some of the credit, if not all. The last few nights, the readings fell into the 30s with frost warnings. Crime dropped proportionally. It isn't rocket science, it's an demonstrable phenomenon. And a weekend doesn't prove a trend, though J-Fled tries to play this every single time there is a fluctuation in the rate of shootings.

But back to the National Guard idea. In the absence of actually having rioting on a scale not seen since 1968, we don't see the Guard being allowed to operate in the city. The Guard is useful for two things - moving sandbags in the event of a natural disaster and operating in a military theater killing enemy combatants. Using combat troops as a police force is fraught with all sorts of complications.

The Dept. does not need "help", or advice from any type of "make believe" reverend. These type of make believe "RevRuns" have no education or degrees to even try to attempt to impose or advise the Policy of our C.P.D.!! We don't tell them how to run their make believe churches/congregations and if we did, it would start with "Family 101", "resume building 101", "work ethics 99, no 101 available, and "how to avoid acting like a animal 101"!!

Maybe they'll be able to shoot looters!

How about a dusk curfew and suspension of civil rights in the "problem areas" (the DOC)?

Augmenting our 10-99 units: 1 PO & 1 Guardsman?

Maybe this isn't such a bad idea after all, particularly now that many of our Guard units have experience from Iraq & Afghanistan, combating insurgents!

J-Fed called it Chiraq.

After all, aren't these thugs insurgents?

Maybe an airstrike or AC-130 action on the west side?

That goof Beale wants more privatization of police operations, maybe a contract with Blackwater? Can I take a leave of absence to work a high-paying contract with them in the same district I work in now?

I say let's do it!

Am not police officer, but am loyal SCC/CPD fan.

Saw Rev on TV news yesterday.

I believe what he said, verbatim, is "We need police here who are not afraid of being shot at."

Don't know if such inflammatory statement was pulled afterwards, but that is what he said.

I think he may have said it twice.

Then his eyes looked weird- he actually looked a bit like he was on something.

Then he brought up National Guard- in order to explain, I guess, which police he feels aren't afraid of being shot at.

Was very strange.

Or maybe “they” want to create circumstances where the people will ask for the military to be deployed in a domestic policing role because the civil police can not keep order. The exact same thing happened in Nazi Germany. Once the military replaced the police, stripping the German people of their civil rights shortly followed.

I know this sound like a kook conspiracy theory, but who would have believed Congress would ever pass a law forcing you to buy a corporate product either, but they did.

Ha! You think Daley will give up control of the streets to the Guard? He won't even arm the airport police!

But just think of the possibilities:

Dusk to dawn curfews. TCP's at every intersection leading out of the hood, every car coming in or out searched and the occupants questioned. Have every major street gang declared "enemy combatants". What's that you say, you're the Grand Poobah of the Royal Order Water Buffaloes street gang? HELLO Gitmo! We could fill up the unused federal prison that Quinn is trying to sell with homegrown American street terrorists, run them through some "enhanced" interrogation, and let them sit until at least the first snowfall.

But all that is a slippery slope to an army of occupation, and while police states are ok IF you are the police, I'd prefer to live in a democracy.

How about doing something even MORE radical than sending in the Guard: hire about 4,000 more Chicago cops and let them do thier jobs!

Not viable without declaring martial law. And the chances of that are lower than God knocking on my door asking if I wanted to be Master of the Universe.

The Military isn't the Police and the Police isn't the Military. While there are some superficial similarities and some basic principles in common, it's not even the same sport where the rubber meets the road. Trying to make one do the job of the other just fucks both up.

While on a superficial level, I admit it would be fun; actually thinking about it makes it seem like a very poor idea. The revs and libs think CPD is excessively brutal? Wait til they see what even the softest military action entails. Some mush mouth shithead starts blabbing about his "rights" and he's gonna get a rifle butt in the face and a boot in the ribs from some 22 year old corn fed infantryman from downstate who's done three tours in Iraq, is pissed at being called up again and who's tired of seeing his taxes go to Cook county and the city.

"Using combat troops as a police force is fraught with all sorts of complications."

I was told this by an alleged participant . . . not sure of the veracity, but it makes one hell of a sea story . . .

In 1992, Los Angeles was burning. Eventually, some Marines were sent up from Camp Pendleton.

A squad gets to South Central (the flashpoint for the riot), and get briefed as follows:

"We got a shooter holed up in that building over there. Cover us while we move in, OK?"

The Marine squad leader lets out a motivated "Aye, aye, sir!"

The Marines proceeded to lay down automatic weapons fire on every open window in the building!

LAPD calls "cease fire," the Marine squad leader and the senior cop start arguing over just what the heck "cover" means, and the GBIQ (Gang-Banger In Question) comes out with his hands in the air, screaming "OK! OK! I GIVE UP! DON'T SHOOT!"

Here's an idea: Maybe the good Babtist minister should encourage the congregation to make sure their kids go to school and value an education. Maybe he should teach them to eschew welfare, dope dealing and gang banging.

Maybe he should encourage them to quite speaking ebonics and start speaking English.

And get married before popping out kids.

And get a job.

No, you're right. That's too hard to change 60 years of urban dependency mentality and ignorance.

That is until 911 happened.... then they found out what it means to get "deployed" until further notice.

The "Guard".... HAH!

Although since Daley and the rest of his political clowns and wannabe politician "revs" feel it's best to sue the department for taking necessary action, let the federal government come on in and do it for us, then let's see the scumbags try to get rich suing the G....

The basic complication is that it is against the law to deploy the military in a law enforcement capacity, with rare exception.

The Posse Comitatus Act is a United States federal law (18 U.S.C. § 1385) passed on June 18, 1878, after the end of Reconstruction, with the intention (in concert with the Insurrection Act of 1807) of substantially limiting the powers of the federal government to use the military for law enforcement. The Act prohibits most members of the federal uniformed services (today the Army, Navy, Air Force, and State National Guard forces when such are called into federal service) from exercising nominally state law enforcement, police, or peace officer powers that maintain "law and order" on non-federal property (states and their counties and municipal divisions) within the United States.

The statute generally prohibits federal military personnel and units of the National Guard under federal authority from acting in a law enforcement capacity within the United States, except where expressly authorized by the Constitution or Congress. The Coast Guard is exempt from the Act during peacetime.

Perhaps the minister should stick to things he is knowledgeable about. How about getting members of his community to comply with basic civility and the tenets of Christianity he preaches about. Call for them to assume responsibility for their actions, cooperate with lawful authorities and stop the violence.

There is no need for further cradle to grave care, another demand, more government largess to protect themselves from each other.

There are a lot of reasons it would not be beneficial to have the Gaurds here.#1 you can't hold the N/G to the same standard's when it comes the police envolved shootings, they are trained to not just neutralize a threat but completely destroy any chance for that threat to take root, hence they are more aggressive than police officers, can you see a soldier standing there and taking the verbal abuse that we take?.The N/G will tke no shit from anyone.#2 will you have the ability to sue the N/G like you can C.P.D?#3 will you have the ability to sue the N/G for civil rights violations like they do C.P.D?,i think not because the the General in charge will not stand for it.#4 will the Rev's ave the ability to call the General and tell him where to station his toops.Last but not the least #5 If an Alderman tries to throw his weight around and attempts to order his soldiers to do his bidding and that soldier tells the Alderman to shove it some where not nice and the Alderman calls the General crying like a little school girl (sorry was not intended to be an insult to school girls) will there be any political fallout to the General?.Let's face it this city is so politically corrupt that having the National Guard here will be a disaster that would take the city of Chicago at least 5-10 years to recover from, the G-man would have no chioce but to take over.Just something to think about.
