Judges Re-Assigned

Fox News investigation revealed judges leaving early:
  • Cook County Chief Judge Timothy Evans has reassigned four judges in response to a FOX Chicago News/Better Government Association investigation into courtroom work habits.

The investigation found the judges leaving their assigned courtrooms well before the 4pm out time ordered by Evans two years ago. One judge, Gloria Chevere, was found soaking up the sun in her backyard at 2pm on a day when her court call ended early.

"I do not want any unacceptable behavior of a few judges to undermine the credibility and integrity of our entire system of justice," Evans said in a statement.

We have to wonder, only four? Either Fox wasn't trying that hard or the BGA is operating, like everyone else, shorthanded. If the courts are that underutilized, it's time to cut the number of judges and courtrooms.

I sure as hell hope we don't lose Judge Chevere over this. She is one of the best judges we have in Cook County.

Somebody out there with a brain has got to start some sort of a position for a judge to be present 24 hours, 7 days a week for a WORKING police officer to go to to get search warrants signed at the very least. For example, take an officer that gets an arrestee that is swearing up and down that he and she knows a place that has got a huge amount of narcotics. The information seems to be valid but it's 0100 hrs and no judge wants to be waken up in the middle of the night to sign the damn search warrant. So, no plans then can be made to " hit " the place in question because of no judge available. There are countless officers that can relate to this over the years, and over the years nothing has been done. What is needed is what I have told you. A 24 hour judge. Take a place like 26th and California that is centrally located. Have three judges working eight hour shifts to accomadate the officers who want to have a search warrant signed, bring a John or Jane Doe in to a judge, etc. Does anyone realize how much information and loss of good seizures because of the lack of judges available to sign search warrants. It seems the practice in Cook County is to really make it hard for the officer to get anything good done. This issue has been raised to supervisors of both the ASA department and the CPD. Even the FOP. I know personally that because I couldn't find a judge to sign a warrant one night we missed a huge shipment of narcotics and guns because of the timing. No b.s. It makes me wonder why no one has ever thought this true and do what a lot of officers have been saying. Maybe because they're stupid? They just don't care? And if a judge takes care of their docket call faster then the other mopey judges, maybe they should be entitled to leave early. All the smart people out there and nothing can be done? WTF?

I have the good fortune of working with some excellent judges at Juvenile court . However , they can only hear the cases that appear before them.I know the police are arresting these delinquents , the question is, why does it seem to be almost impossible for cases to get to court. I saw a case the other day where when the judge asked for background, he was told the minor had 14 prior arrests , however this was his first filed petition and first time in court.
Once a minor is on probation, especially for a more serious felony charge , every new arrest should be referred to court and probation violations filed by the States Attorneys office. The amount of judges , States Attorneys and public defenders is probably right , but if no cases are going to court , what do you expect them to do .
Don't even get me started on the jail and the Audy home being undercrowded.

I can vouch for Judge Ryan, he has signed countless Search Warrants for me, and my teammates, at all hours, on every day of the week that ended with a Y.

What a shame - the guy took a duck day and gets moved.

Seems to me the punishment does not fit the crime in this instance. Your talking about Area 1, not Area 3. The guy has a full house almost every day, just as they do in Area 4, 5 and 2.

So he took a duck... cannot believe that it has come to this.

That's why things are so shitty in this County.

It's the judges fault.

No, wait, it's the ASA's fault.

No, it's probably the police's fault.

The media? Probably them.

No, no, no it's the mayor's fault. That's it. It's all his fault that this city is filled with evil savages.

Here's one. Maybe the reason that things are so shitty in this county is because it is filled with shitty people. MAYBE THE PEOPLE ARE THE PROBLEM.

Maybe its the people who demand justice, then change their mind at the last minute.

Find the killer! Oh, its been a few years and the killer is so poor and so black that it really seems like a waste of time to enact justice. Those victims are still dead and we've all forgotten about them, so why enact any justice on this poor man. He was probably innocent anyway.

Hey, let's give him some of our tax money so he can turn his life around again!

If I had to bet, I would say that this would be a miserable crime filled county regardless of who the judges were or who the ASA's were or who the mayor was.

It is an evil plagued county because it is filled with evil people and others who won't stand up to them. It's a county that only gets what it deserves. Kind of like hell.

I agree with you 100%. Sometimes even during the day it's impossible to find a judge at 26th St. to sign a warrant. If you don't have a regular judge that you can call, then you're wandering around looking for a judge that's still there after 2pm.

After a "several month long" investigation, FOX could only find 4 judges that were leaving early!!! Maybe a follow-up investigation would be why they are done with their work so quickly. Maybe it's due to them tossing out 85% of the case load so that they can clear those files and be done for the day. They could care less about justice. Another part of the system that treats it as a game of numbers and not real life.

If you were a judge, how many people woiuld you find guilty at traffic court? The damn fines are way out of line. Most people that work in this city (not the shit heads, they pay no taxes or fines, they get SWAP) can't afford a $230 fine for running a stop sign. I know, it's illegal and you got caught, tou should pay a fine but $130 for the county and $90 for the city? It's too much money to pay for the average working stiff. Look at the cost of a parking ticket, they keep raising the fines and raping the citizenry. The fines for movers and parkers are just too high.

Judges...pfffft. If there is a fine involved, boy are you going to pay. If there is jail time involved, boy are you liable to get a pass. Punch a copper in the face and what happens? Probably not a damn thing at criminal court, but at the civil suit, it's payday for the offender that hurt the cop.

I wonder how the county can afford to have so many part time employees in court rooms at full time salaries in a recession? Oh, I know, let's raise taxes on businesses. I'm always amazed how many people seem to think a business pays taxes. You dunb shits, their customers pay the taxes in the form of higher prices. Let's punish the oil companies by raising their taxes. Gee, I wonder why one of the reasons that gas is over $3 a gallon. Maybe because the government makes more net income from the sale of gas than the oil company does. And can you tell me just what the governmnet does to earn this money? Not a drop of gas comes from them. Do you know why they take the tax money out of your paycheck every payday? It's because if you wrote a check to the IRS every quarter, there would be a revolution in this country. People would actually realize just how much of their income is stolen from them by our government.

Juvy court is a joke along with the rest of the system in Illinois. If a case does make it to juvy court the kid will just plea to some bullshit probation. He will get the bullshit speech from the juvy judge (ie judge Katz) "stay in school, stay out of trouble. I'll give you one more chance and do not come in front of me again."(and when the juvy asshole appears again the moron judge gives the same speech and now puts him on double super secret probation. And the cycle continues. (and love watching the attorneys in Juvy court, push papers back and forth, look around, pretend you are doing something to save these youths, push more paper around then offer the usual 30 day probation and 5 days SWAP.

Suburban Cop here. I smiled when I saw Brim got caught. What a Police hating Thug loving piece of garbage she was. No matter what you had she would treat the Police like they were liars and slap the scum on the wrist. One time I had a DUI where the guy was off the roadway and stopped across the sidewalk. When I questioned him why he was stopped here, his reply, "I'm drunk". He does Fields and fails but refuses the blow. Well it gets to court and Brim throws it out because, I quote, "you didn't see him driving, he was already stopped, and also I find it very hard to believe Officer, he said he was drunk, I don't find that credible" and then found no PC for the stop and arrest. Hope you rot.

How about putting a few good judges, that we already pay, together and have them oversee the others.

They seem to have enough time on thier hands and God knows we really need some oversight on some judges. They can review their cases, and how they release/SOL cases. They can ask judges what the basis is for these releases. If judges have to answer for their actions, like the rest of the world, they may be more respoinsible.

This would be the second "reassingment" for Jim Ryan, who among other transgressions once would not allow a woman in his courtroom to use the restroom, resulting in her letting go in court.
