Naperville Term Limits

  • The Naperville City Council tonight moved closer to placing a measure on the November ballot to limit the number of terms the mayor and council members could serve.

After an hour-long discussion, council members voted 7-1 to direct the city's legal staff to draw up a possible referendum question on term limits. Council members will review that question at their July 20 meeting. They have until an Aug. 29 deadline to place referendum questions on the Nov. 2 ballot.

On Tuesday night, council members agreed to instruct Naperville's lawyers to develop a referendum question that would limit all city elected officials to serving three consecutive terms, beginning with officials whom voters elect in April 2013.

The action is in response to recent efforts by the Naperville Voter Education League to gather signatures to place the issue of term limits on November's ballot.

After our last referendum foray, we realize the enormity of the task at hand in Chicago. You need professional signature collectors, lawyers versed in election law, time beyond what we have available to even hope to get to the point where a Daley-controlled Election Board would even consider granting you one of the three referendum spots available. The chances of that happening rapidly approach "zero" with alarming speed.

Reform is a long way away here.

This initiative must be picked up by multiple grass roots groups to gain momentum.

It could occur is the impetus were in place.

Government is in place to serve the PEOPLE not for us to be servants to the government.

Without the 2nd Amendment, the Bill of Rights is nothing, zilch, zero!

Shortshanks knows this and so does Obama the Marxist.

"Professional Signature Collectors"

How ironic that a PSC is aka a "suburbanite". When you give free handouts like the mayor does it's easy to get things done. He'll probably have his own referendum stating there should be no term limits and you keep your seat for life.

We can't get anything done because we are cursed with JOBS.

No matter what it won't happen in the corrupt city of chicago. Even if all the signatures were there and handled by professionals it would get killed by the dictator Daley. The evil that Daley and his alderthieves have created is so deeply intrenched that it will never happen. The horrid scum that have been in power for so long have poisioned nearly everything. The media would need to be on board, but the dictator Daley controlls them. Term limits would be the only thing that can save chicago.

Boy oh boy do we need that HERE in Shitcago, actually throughout Illinois. No more than two terms for every elected position in this state, from Governor all the way down to Aldercreature. It's the only way to prevent these "public servants" from setting up their own illegal contract fiefdoms.

The Mayor and most politicians, if not all, are NOT interested in doing the work of the people and for the people. They continue their corrupt system because they get rich off of the taxpayer trough.

For every greedy politician that is removed from office, there is a line of people, with just as much greedy intent, waiting in line to grab the open spot and fleece the treasury.

No, reform will not be coming anytime soon to Chitroit, or Crook County.

Chicagoans, you have to stop voting for incumbents. Even if the next guy ends up being a goof, in four years, vote him/her out, too.

WE HAVE TO VOTE THEM ALL OUT!!!

OT: I guess we are the only suckers that actually have to live in the City. The Trib has an article that talks about a CPS social worker that has lived in Evanston for 18 years and only now is facing termination if he doesnt relocate. He even admits that he will "rent a roon in Chicago" in order to satisfy the "decades old, yet controversial requirement". ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME??? We have to live in the city or we are immediately terminated! And no, we cannnot rent a fucking room and have a residence in Evanston so our kids can go to a better school! The article says he "has 2 school aged children" and that he will not uproot his family...HELLO!!! HE IS A EMPLOYEE OF THE CPS SYSTEM! I guess they are good enough to get a check from, but not to send his kids to! If nothing else I hope FOP takes this and runs with it as case in point and sets a precedence that we, too, only need to rent a room. They get a 4% raise AND dont have to live in this dump? I guess I should have been a teacher!

When the corrupt political class controls the legislation process, they are not about to let any laws pass or referendums that would be detrimental to their power, such as term limits. Madigan should have been out of office years ago, or at least, not in the position of power that he now holds. The stte, city and county are so engrained in corruption and nepotism and cronyism, they would not know how to start reform. As soon as an alleged reformer gets into office or in power, they are quickly corrupted as they see how much they can make and how much influence they have. The same goes for the police department, an arm of the patronage machine. You will never see term limits or reform in the redistricting process in this state or in this city.

Recently I attended a police motorcycle club convention in Tennessee. On the local news the big stories were that the state senate OKed guns in bars and the Knoxville County Commission voted to reduce itself from 19 to 11 members.

I talked to a lot of cops there from all over the country and some from other countries. Many of them said in a variety of accents, "You're from Chicago! Y'all got that crazy mayor there
!!"

It'd be a several year process, for sure. But I think this is an idea that could possibly be sold to the public.

It couldn't start with the referendum. It'd have to start with some prominent persons floating the idea, getting some talk going.

Interesting. My only question: what could I do to help make this happen?

Let me point this out, what do think will happen to public pensions then? Of course politicans are not willing to give up their pension but are voting to elminate ours.

If something like this begins to pass at local goverments and then state and then onto to federal level, you are going to have people serving three terms and still recieving a pension. You think there is a drain on our pension now? You are going to have thousands upon thousands more people added to pension books are a much faster pace an will draw more money away.

Now even though these area the same people voting to ddefer payments from our funds and to try to eliminate them do you think that will happen to theirs when they are crying poor when theses funds are drying up?

Most FOP Unit Reps were sworn in to be registrars with the Chicago Board of elections. Reps can register people to vote, they will begin hopefully by getting officers from their district registered to vote.

That is our only hope of getting rid of shortshanks, register to vote and then vote him out.

More than 50% of PO's are NOT registered to vote!

That is shameful, register in your district, it is free and to vote is part of the rent we must pay to live in a free society. I consider it an honor and privilege, even if I always vote for the losing side, anyone but daley. This is our once in four year chance coming up, don't blow it again!

Term limits are not the right answer anyway. If 20% of the population is actually voting, all term limits do is ensure that periodically you will have inexperienced hacks in political positions.

The only answer, and the reason we are screwed here, is an involved, informed electorate.

6/17/2010 07:23:00 AM

This couldn't be more true. If you think about it, lots of other things revolve around this contention as well. People wouldn't be rallying for gun control, if they weren't idiots. We'd have CCW here. People would demand efficient government, and demand credentials from those whom they are electing (birth certificate?). People would wake up and understand that it's not the government's job to do everything for you, it's their job to stay out of your way so you can pursue your OWN happiness and economic welfare.

Oh to dream. When did we all get so stupid?

Yeah, because that's easy to do when these corrupt politicians spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on campaigns. If term limits are so stupid, let's just keep the same president until he is voted out. It should be that simple, but it's not; we desperately need term limits.

oh, around the early 1970's.

but 'stupid' has been around for a long, long time.

it's just that lately, being 'stupid' doesn't reliably result in being 'dead'.

it's that 'safety net' that karl marx wrote about, in his communist manifesto, circa the early 1900's.
