Huberman to Destroy Schools

Not that they weren't on the verge of collapse anyway, it's just that someone is giving them a couple of good kicks to see what falls off the rotting corpse:
  • The Chicago Board of Education today granted schools chief Ron Huberman authority to lay off teachers and increase class sizes, a procedural move that was met with fierce resistance from union groups.

It may all be a show though:
  • The threat of class sizes of up to 35 students next fall has loomed for months due to an estimated $600 million budget deficit for Chicago Public Schools. However, more than half of the deficit comes from state cuts to education funding, which could be restored when Springfield passes a final budget.
Either Shortshanks is running a bluff, counting on Springfield to come up with the dough at the last minute, or he's making Huberman the stalking horse for a full scale attack on the Teachers' Union.

Right now, we figure it's door #2, the full scale attack. And he's got the perfect tool to carry it out - a non-educator who's managed to move from city job to city job, collecting pay raises every step of the way and leaving nothing resembling progress in his wake. Even the BreakingNews headline names Huberman as getting "the OK" to launch the offensive.

And why not? Shortshanks dragged a whole bunch of unions back to the table after the No-lympic failure for concessions, he's ordered managers and exempts to take anywhere from 12 to 30 to 40 days off, he won in arbitration with the FOP, so why not see what he can wring out of the teachers? It's not like anyone gets hurt except minority children - and they probably would have gotten shot anyway.

Whichever way it goes, Daley is making Huberman radioactive for any sort of elected office, which might be another part of the plan.

When I was a kid going to public school in the 60’s and 70’s the class sizes were well over 40 kids each. The problem isn’t how big the class size is; it is how disciplined the children are and how competent the teachers are. We don’t seem to have either in our schools today do we.

I always love a teachers strike because then the mob of dysfunctional social rejects the Board of Education employs puts themselves out on public display on picket lines and we get to see them in the harsh light of day.

It’s ugly, always very ugly.

Best case scenario: fire all but one teacher and have all the kids watch him/her on a tv, like the video judge. Think of all the money the city will save. You could have Harvard and Princeton professors teaching these shitheads and nothing would change without the parents help.

The whole human race is based on intelligence to survive. The police have come in contact with a lot of stupid people. With that said, now the City of Chicago is going to mess with a system that teaches kids some smarts preparing them for the future. It is also a political move to break unions. Now we are really moving backward here and time is of the essence seeing as many of us do, a lot of stupid people becoming more stupid and more violent. I am ashamed to be a Chicagoan, associated with all this I have told.

I suspect Huberman will emerge at sometime in the future as a Mayoral candidate. How will his many gaffes in judgement be whitewashed as to appear he's actually competent at running any of the agencies he's headed? CTA was left in tatters, and it appears that the Chicago Public Schools are about to crash & burn.
The new Teacher's Union president-elect doesn't appear to want to play footsie with Luberman or Shortshanks either, and is demanding a full accounting of the budget. It's all about to get real interesting. And who knows what additional dirt the Reader will dig up regarding School Board shenaneghans? The reporters there clearly have every intention of digging further into Lubie's lies and incompetence.

Now what would the sensible thing to do when you have a $600 million budget deficit? If you guessed give them a 4% raise that wold add another $800 million to that gaping hole of a deficit you would be right.

But in the budget that $800 million line item wold be balanced with an equal $800 million influx of capital from a bond issue. Yes, get out the municipal charge card to pay for that raise in hopes of buying labor peace.

Let's hop the new teacher's union president isn't being bought. Take the raise and still shove the layoffs and class size increases up Huberman's ass. File that lawsuit!

And how the hell is it that an openly gay man who never raised or educated any children of his own and has no teaching credentials is the best one to run one of the nation's largest school systems?

Of course! He is covered with the contents of daley's asshole! His head fits up there nicely.

The class sizes doen't affect high schools as much. Elementary schools are babysitters for 'single parent' kids and those mamas make their kids go to school.

Look at a school like Prosser Career Academy High School by Grand and Central. They have a student absentee rate of nearly 20%....so, if you have a class of 35, you're going to be missing 7 students a day any way....making the classes 28 students/per class........and, Prosser's Principal kenneth Hunter could give a shit less if he has kids absent, all he cares about is attendance the first two weeks of school to get his state monies he can squander away..........and, tardies which are 'supposed' to turn into absences disappear at Prosser

And, at a Harlan or a Fenger, their studnet absentee rates are hovering near 35%...so, their 35 students a class is more like 23

Looks like a "game of chicken" between Huberman/Daley and the teachers union. Haven't seen any discussion regarding lay-offs from school adminstration staff, and I've heard there is an administration staff person for every teacher, a ratio of 1:1, though administration has little to do with student scores, achievement, graduation rates, etc.

Working for Daley in a senior administration is a delicate balance between loyal service and self-preservation. Those loyal department heads rarely see long-term career benefits from their fealty. Taking "bullets for Daley" doesn't pay; you eventually get pushed out and cold-shouldered: Gery Chico, Forrest Claypool (no significant political "bounce" after service), or "sink like stone" like Julia Stasch, Steve Schlickman (still an outcast), etc. The guy who served as Park District's head in early 90s was a professional appointee charged with massive lay-offs of Park District workers; he eventually fled without forwarding address.

Huberman may seem "teflon" now, but it's unlikely that Daley will continue to protect and reward him when school situation because overwhelming negative from a mayorial re-election viewpoint. Problem is there isn't a strong alternate candidate for Daley for next mayoral election.

If there is a CPS strike this fall, then Daley will panic.

There is always the big cost cutting method that nobody talks about: only legal residents get the free education paid for by the taxpayers for the taxpayers. Lots of maney saved, no jobs lost.

Now there is a platform for a Mayoral candidate.

Huberman is funny, what with his 2-3 "work sedans". He is basically the fall guy for schools.

Lets not forget how many people freeloading off the government in Chicago that DEMAND a FREE education for their 8 kids and pay ZERO taxes.

I didnt get 2 free meals a day in school. How much does that cost the city?

It should be simple, you pay no taxes.. you get no services.

Speaking of 40 kids in a classroom:

Hire the old nuns from the 60's and 70's who ran the catholic schools with punches to the head and whacks to the knuckles. You'll learn, trust me.

Make 'em wear plaid uniforms and clean white shirts and ties and sit strait in desks that all face the teacher. None of these "pods" and groups of kids facing each other.
Make the entire school go to mass and pray and behave or you get whacked and a phone call to the parent(S). Before each day, stand up and say the pledge of allegiance, and say your prayers that God will help you learn. Everyone adds in an extra prayer for someone's sick sibling, parent, uncle or grandparent. Learn how to spell and write cursive like there is no tomorrow.
Join the scouts after school and get involved with the intramural sports.

Those were the good ol days, long, long gone.

Meanwhile, when my kids reached school age we're moving out of the city. Nowhere is perfect, but I refuse to continue to pay my tax dollars into the black hole that is Chicago and get so little in return (shitty schools, overworked cops, crappy public transit, awful roads).

I'll say this -- Europeans may be taxed like crazy, but at least they get something for it. We're taxed like crazy and get crap.

The CPS system has sucked for at least the last 40 years, perhaps longer. (That is just how far back I can remember)

The teachers do not matter, when the schools are filled with kids who have no desire to learn.

There is no incentive for teachers to teach or for kids to learn. Drop out, get pregnant(or vice versa), here comes a bunch of cash for you.

Sectio 8, WIC, Link, etc, etc. Just like grandma and mom, keep the cycle going.

I hope the teachers realize that this is their ONE chance to dominate. They need to tell their teachers to start saving and prepare for a strike. Daley cannot afford a strike this fall with the Election right around the corner. A strike would mean kids in the streets every night and thus an expectation of higher violence. No education AND increased violence is a receipe for disaster come election time...

The teachers union hasn't had a strike in 25 years. There is no one left who even knows how to organize one. Signs, media interviews, who goes where, money saved for strike pay, all of this is in complete disarray. There is no way they are going to strike. They'll just take what the city offers.

Daley has successfully pacified them, just like he has pacified our "union" and every other city union.

The next step is to start offering benefits to the majority (pay) at the expense of the minority (layoffs). Once the union members are pitted against each other, the union is finished.

There is no one better than Daley at destroying unions. Pacify, split, and destroy. It happened with the police the moment officers started accepting management positions in hundreds of different "units" with no consideration for senority or other contract protections. Low and behold, now all management positions are straight up political appointments and Daley is in total control of every facet of the police department.

He is the master. We are the fools. The teachers union will soon be as dead as ours is.
