Oh Yes!

  • Utah is set to execute a condemned killer by firing squad shortly after midnight Thursday, reviving an old West style of justice that hasn't been used for at least 14 years and that many criticize as archaic.

Barring the success of any final appeals, Ronnie Lee Gardner will be strapped into a chair, have a target pinned over his heart and die in a hail of bullets from five anonymous marksmen armed with .30-caliber rifles and firing from behind a ported wall.
Call us old-fashioned, but we still believe in the deterrent effect of executions. We have yet to see a single executed criminal kill again.

Saw this story on the news. The firing squad will be made up of volunteers from local law enforcement (where do I sign up?). Each of the five members of the firing squad will be given a loaded rifle. ONE of the rifles will be loaded with blanks, but none of the "shooters" will be aware of which rifle contains those blanks. Each will be required to go through counselling AND each will be given a commemorative coin of the event.

Hmmm? A commemorative coin? WTF?
So, what in the hell is it going to say on that coin?

I wish we had the firing squad here in Chicago. Every gangbanger, mugger, robber, rapist and piece of shit should be stood before the firing squad and put down.

- not a cop

In the spirit of "Let's do it"...

-- Death row inmate Ronnie Lee Gardner was executed at 12:20 a.m. (MST) by a firing squad at Utah State Prison.

But after 24 additional years of life while awaiting execution, is this really "justice?" A condemned man who gets to live an additional quarter century before meeting his maker seems to have scammed the system one final time.

If an execution cannot be carried out within one year of the verdict, I for one, believe it is justice denied. The victims families had to go through all the appeals and continuances and their loved ones are still dead.

Executions within one year or else just make it life without possibility of parole and be done with it.

Uh, I think deterrence has to do with a *different* person choosing not to commit a crime in light of the execution. This seems more retributive and preventative.

By the way, once you decide to execute someone who cares if it is the needle, a firing squad, or a guillotine. As long as it is not "cruel" is seems silly to sweat the details. Dead is dead.

the reason for the firing squad is that in Utah a mormon majority state they beleive in the bibical mandate of spilled blood of a perpatrator as a form of atonement was alaways at the forefront of any capital punishment, in fact in yrs gone by if you owed money to a neighbor or friend and refused to pay they could kill you to receive atonement if his blood was spilled.

Let the coward bastard commit suicide.

Or strap him down and spend a couple months inflicting paper cuts on him and then massaging them with bleach, vinegar, salt water and maybe a little battery acid for good measure.

Our liberal society is MUCH too kind to our criminals. Fuck the rat bastards!!!

The inscription on the commerative coin will read: "Made in China" and "Not worth a plugged nickel" and "Caution: Contains Lead."

No more "In God We Trust" or "E Pluribus Unum": It's not politically correct.

"We have yet to see a single executed criminal kill again." Wise and judicious words!! Amen!

The face of the coin has a likeness of the condemned man, Ronnie Lee Gardner, surrounded by the words, "The State of Utah's "Shot Through The Heart" Ronnie Lee Gardner Execution and Marksmanship Fest-18 June 2010.

The reverse has a likeness of the rock group known as Bon Jovi, surrounded by the title of their 1985 hit recording, "Shot Through The Heart" 25th Anniversary-2010.

I love those Mormons!

take the five bullets out of the prisoners body, forge each one into a coin and auction them off to cover the cost of the execution.
As far as what to print on the coins how about the name of the executed, date, location and a catchy phrase like "Utah State Pen. we aim to please".

Reinstate hanging in Illinois... Dangle 'em unrestrained with their head through the hole of a 6ft by 6ft wooden collar and have the miscreant standing on a brick pile... Let the victim's family members remove a brick a day while the condemned flails, runs, shits and cries. Televise it from Daley Plaza and beam it into the CPS dens of honorable matriculation, County Jail and State prisons, errr... graduate centers of penetence and industrial education.

Poor impulse control and a throw-away, mouth breathing and uncivilized lifestyle violently inflicted upon others should have very PAINFUL consequences!
Oh fuck it then... Do like the Chinese, one 7.65mm slug behind the ear and the miscreant's survivors have to pay for the bullet.

Loud and colorful terminal sanction IS A DETERRENT!

Yes, FINALLY met his maker after 25 years of 3 meals and a cot, ACLU fighting for his "rights", which coSt the taxpayers millions.

this poor soul who was "abused" (when are they going to stop using that as an excuse?) got to live 25 more years than the two innocent people he murdered.

Ever wonder how many times Ronnie was arrested? Ever wonder what he did and was not arrested and tried for? We sure know what he did to get his fatal case of lead poisoning and we do not shed any tears for that asshole. Would like to think the ex-girlfriend is doing long time. Wonder when we will read about Darrell Washington, age 25 with 45 arrests and who thinks its ok to knock the teeth out of 39 yr old women at ATMs in the Loop? Wish Darrell could be strapped in a chair too before he either kills someone or is arrested for the 46th time.

It was the law when he was sentenced so it remains. I read they used 30-30 rifles, not 30-06. Personally, I think 30-06 is the way to go, faster, heavier bullet, larger wound channel, instantaneous chest cavity destruction and death. No suffering, no bullshit trying to find a vein in life long drug addicts. Just ready, aim, fire.

The primary reason that the death by firing squad option is available in Utah is because of the Mormon doctrine of blood atonement. All of the people who've selected it as a manner of death in recent history have been Mormon.
