Class Acts
Missed this one yesterday, but once again, the Chicago Blackhawks step up to the plate:
The event was the inaugural fund-raiser for the Brotherhood for the Fallen, a not-for-profit organization of Chicago police officers committed to attending the funeral services of officers slain in the line of duty across the United States and giving their families financial donations.
[...] The Hawks contributed a Dave Bolland package: an autographed jersey, tickets and a meet-and-greet with the pesky center of the defending Stanley Cup champions. What they didn't expect was that Bolland and defenseman Duncan Keith were going to attend.
We don't know why the Sun Times covered this 40 days after the actual event. In any case, thanks to the Chicago Blackhawks for stopping by to assist a worthy endeavor.

Hmmmm.....
I wonder what the common denominator is?
Noble cause, but why doesn't the department pay for representatives to attend on duty death funerals for other departments? Shortshanks and his twenty person secret service team get shuttled around the world. And they can't send a couple officers to pay respects? Sad.
having won the stanley cup for the first time in 49 years was a dream come true for the blackhawks and their fans---- it was almost unbelievable how accessible the hawks were to the general public after they won the cup--- almost daily their were reports of the cup being somewhere available for public viewing---- out of all the professional athletes who make a living in this town the blackhawks seeem to be the most media and fan friendly....
While on this topic SCC, just a reminder... All Chicago's sports teams i.e. Cobs, Sox, Bears and Hawks each contributed a tidy sum towards our 'Catastrophically Injured Member' statue at our Gold Star Memorial and Park.
A class act on behalf of these organizations to honor, "Chicago's Finest."

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Same question I asked myself.
Especially since there have been a couple of benefits for officers as of late and none had any tickets to any Chicago sporting events raffled off.
I agree, why doesn't our silly department take care of this?
Thanks to these Blackhawks for stepping up to the plate where our department failed miserably.
Thanks again and GO HAWKS!!!

It says in the article that one of the cops is friends with one of the players.
With regard to donations, (speaking as a volunteer for a few charities) the teams get hundreds of requests a year. Unless the sponsoring organization is a 501c3or has an "in" with someone at the team chances are the answer will be no. The teams are businesses and want their tax deduction.
That said, the Hawks and their players are generally the most generous.
Believe it or not, for all his craziness, Ozzie Guillien is a friend of the police.
I was at this function and it is in fact true, 2 of the Blackhawk players stayed for a couple hours talking to everyone at the benefit and having a couple drinks. Both players graciously took pictures and signed autographs. There were lots of donations from the Blackhawk organization for this wonderful cause. Oh, and Duncan Keith has new teeth!!! Thank You Blackhawks for supporting such a worthwhile cause
spent time with the hawks and the cup after they won!! they are a bunch of stand up guys and love the police.
Out of all professional athletes in this city, the Hawks players are the most fan friendly and accessable. I wonder why? Anyway, good luck Hawks and bring home another cup!
