Two Officers Shot

Two cops down at 81st and Manistee. No further info at this time. Lake Shore Drive is being shut down to transport at least one of the wounded to Northwestern Hospital.

We will update as possible.

UPDATE: Second ambulance headed to Christ. Both hospitals are Trauma Centers.

UPDATE: Breaking News has a story up:
  • A Chicago police officer and another person were shot this afternoon in the South Chicago neighborhood on the South Side.

The shooting happened about 1:30 p.m. in the 8100 block of South Manistee Avenue.

A law enforcement source, citing preliminary reports, said the officer is an on-duty evidence technician who was processing a crime scene at that location when the shooting occurred. Investigators were en route to the scene.

The officer was shot in the head, the source said. The officer was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and the other victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

The news isn't identifying the second victim as a police officer though an e-mailer says he was off duty. Very fluid situation. If you're the praying type, pray harder please.

UPDATE: Second victim might be a retired cop, possibly CHA.

UPDATE: ET from a police family.

UPDATE: Radio is confirming both as deceased. We are shell-shocked to say the least. Absolutely speechless. RIP brothers.

God of mystery, we pray for the family of our fallen officer and we thank you for his ultimate sacrifice. Bless the lives of his family so they may find healing. Help his department support his family and help them heal from their loss. Even though his death is senseless, make something good come out of this situation that will help make his department stronger. Amen.

Just heard about the sad news on WBBM News Radio 780. Unfortunately, the police officer/evidence technician was pronounced dead.

Very sad indeed. Evidence technicians ride 99 and do their work 99. If something happens, they don't have a partner to rely on.

I will sincerely pray for the family of our fellow brother officer and also for the retired officer who was shot and killed.

May God watch over your families during this very difficult time.

The Judgement

The officer stood and faced his God, Which must always come to pass.

He hoped his shoes were shinning, Just as brightly as his brass.

Step forward now, Officer, How shall I deal with you?

Have you always turned the other cheek? To my church have you been true?

The officer squared his shoulder and said, No, Lord, I guess I aint,

Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was rough,

And sometimes I've been violent Because the streets are tough.

But I never took a penny That wasn't mine to keep..

Though I worked a lot of overtime, when the bills got too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept an unmanly tear.

I know I don't deserve a place among the people here.

They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much, But if you don't...I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne, where the saints often trod.

As the officer waited quietly for the judgment of his God.

Step forward now, Officer. You've borne your burdens well.

Come walk a beat on heaven's streets, You've done your time in hell

A Police Officer was killed today…or was it an execution? Who is to blame?…The Mayor, The Superintendent, The Alderman, The Liberal media or the legal system of Cook County…I say its all of the above.. We were once the Police and we were feared. Now thanks to the above list of police hating liberals they no longer have fear…We Do. Fear of losing our jobs, our freedom, our homes and our lives have replaced our once great Department. They have tied our hands allowing us to be beaten down and now executed. By allowing the ranks to be so understaffed you have compromised our safety and made us second guess all that we do making us ineffective. My wife and Children are afraid. I am afraid. I don’t want to see another friend or co-worker die because we believed in the pledge we took when we started this
Journey, while the powers that be have forgotten or never made the pledge at all. Those of us who still believe are ridiculed and left twisting in the wind by non deserving meritorious supervision that use us as pawns in a political game of deceit. They don’t care about us or the real citizens of Chicago. Power and greed is all they seek, so tomorrow when you go back to your smoke and mirror unit or while you’re doing missions that are a joke, remember, we are all we have and we have been abandoned.
Be safe and God bless

As long as the perception of our department lies with the reflection of Superintendent Jodi Weis (An EX FBI Agent in a suit) and Michael Masters (An educated man, but has no business even being affiliated with the Chicago Police Department on ANY level), we will NOT be respected on the streets of Chicago.

I know your foot is out the door Mayor Daley but it is TIME. This is a daily morale buster just having our department managed because they are not running this department, by these NON POLICE BUREAUCRATS. Our lives are now also engulfed with some level of fear. Let’s be honest. We are discouraged everyday with the state of the department, the constant slums we patrol, the sadness of this world, the depression due to the economy and the crime in our own neighborhoods, now we are also seen as victims!

We need a real POLICE leader NOW. Not in May when you finally retire or in March when this idiot's contract is up! We need it NOW! How many more of us have to die for your ego!

Jfled was on the news this afternoon and read his 5 sentence statement from a piece of paper. This FK can't even speak from the heart and mind. No past super ever needed to have a piece of paper in front of him when speaking to the press when an officer was killed.

Then Jfled ends it with his own two cents that you can tell was not on the piece of paper - "we are going to squeeze the neighborhood until we find the killer."

I want Jfled to provide me with a written definition of what "squeeze" means to him. My fear is it means we take the bad guy out for ice cream.

"For Want of a nail,a shoe was lost ....."

Dear Supt. Weis,
are you beginning to get the big picture ?!!
On the federal level, you are insultated,"removed" as it were from the more so gritty aspects ,of day to day crime. Your scope can be narrowed to focus on one specific aspect as there is minimal, to no, chance of an immmediate threat. Whereas here on the front-lines, we we must use every tool at our disposal to outwit and neutralize, ANY potential threat to the general public as well as our selves.
For want of SUPPORTIVE and decisive leadership,we are loosing ground !! MR. WEIS WE ARE DYING OUT HERE !!! Mayor Daley is already half way out of the door. SIR ,IT IS WELL PAST TIME !!
If at all; what do you stand for ???!!
Will you be remembered as the one responsible for taking a stand ,or as the architect of this city's funeral pyre.
IT IS TIME TO EITHER BE A LEADER OF MEN AND WOMEN,OR TO STEP ASIDE AND TAKE YOUR RIGHTFUL PLACE AS A BRIEF FOOTNOTE IN THE HISTORY OF THIS GREAT CITY !!!
Eagerly awaiting your decision Sir.............

As a citizen of Chicago my heart is breaking for the men and women of our police department and for their family's.

To the politicians who have gutted our police department: You are the ones at fault for this behavior. You have empowered these animals. You want these officers to treat these animals as humans, well they aren't human. I am talking about Daley, Weis and all 50 aldercreatures. To you politicians the vote and the money you can pocket is more important than our officers safety. You politicians listen to the the preachers telling everyone that these are good people, they are just misunderstood, they are deprived and should be given more. Why weren't those preachers out on the streets prior to these murders trying to stop the gangs? Pfleger, Meeks and the rest I am talking about you. These people are animals and deserve to be treated as such.

SCC with the upcoming elections, please take a moment to put up a recommended list of politicians we should vote for. Many of us citizens would be happy to vote for a politician who really supports our police, but you know who those people are much better than us.

WE THE CITIZENS OF CHICAGO ARE FED UP. WE LOVE AND SUPPORT OUR POLICE OFFICERS AND OUR HEARTS ARE HURTING ALSO.

Dear Chicago Police Officers,

You have always had my deepest respect because of where you work and live. I have been a police officer in a city near SF, CA for 13 years. I come to this site often and I am amazed at the crap you have to put up with in that town of yours. And my town is notorious in the state for being a liberal hellhole.

Keep your heads up in these dark days. You can keep your heads up because you work one of the toughests towns and you do it well.

Sincerely,

A cop from CA.

The suspect that shot him will stand up in court, with counsel demanding his rights. While a... young widowed mother must work for her kids, and spend many long, lonely nights. Yes, somebody killed a policeman today, in your town or mine. While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors, a cop put his life on the line. Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street, and he stands at each new rookie's side. He answered the call, of himself gave his all, and a part of America died." - Author Unknown. Dear Chicago Police:

Please take the gloves off. For your own sake, and for the sake of the dwindling tax base that's still here. I will blatantly ignore any collateral damage that results from you taking back the streets. If someone doesn't stifle this now, the shit will only keep spreading. When will it end?

You have our support.

11/26/2010 05:51:00 PM

**************************

Thanks, but until it's on paper and can be used in our own defense, we consider only that we have YOUR support, not the public's.

When the day comes that the police are completely indemnified and immune to civil liability from engaging in the course of our duties this city will continue to burn.

Until the day comes when both state and federal laws are enacted that prohibit civil suits against us as they are prohibited against lawyers engaging in their official duties, judges and the federal government, consider your police force to be after-the-fact report takers, nothing more.

When THAT day comes and it's put into print and signed off on by the lawful powers of this state and country, THEN you will see what the real police can do to clean this shithole up.

Until then, call your alderman, mayor, state rep and congressman and tell them to enact the necessary laws to protect ALL police officers engaged in any necessary enforcement actions from frivolous witch hunt lawsuits from those trying to get paid off the government on the backs of your police.

A cop.

For those who are saying to "take the gloves off" remember, jody weis will have you stripped of your police powers and tried in Federal Court and convicted and sent to prison if you as much as slap any offender on the face.

You know he will do this, he has done it before and a good cop is in prison due to jody weis.

Let jody weis do some squeezing himself, let jody weis slap some offender, then kick the offender in tha balls, then I might believe he has our back.

Until then we have the gangs and criminals to fear as well as our own superintendent of police.

It goes without saying that our mayor, richard daley the snakehearted is our worst enemy.

And if anyone does come up with an offender, please don't slap the person and make sure he gets a blanket or two, plenty to eat, the finest in medical care, a properly padded mattress and a good defense attorney.

Then, if he ever does get sent to prison, Governor Quinn will let him out early anyway.

What a crock of shit. We get killed regularly and our leaders, elected and appointed, are who we must fear as much as those thugs with guns.

The only problem is that Jody doesn't understand how it hurts. He can't speak from the heart because he has no emotional ties to fellow officers here in Chicago. He doesn't know what it feels like to hear or see that one of us has been gunned down in broad daylight. We do a job that only those of us who do it can fully comprehend. Dear Supt. Weis,
are you beginning to get the big picture ?!!

It is truly heart breaking to read the comments relating to the death of the CPD ET and the retired CHA officer. Apparently, the ET was shot several times while he was working, in full uniform. You may recall that earlier this year an officer leaving the 7th Dist. was shot while putting his duty gear in the trunk of his car in a police parking lot and another officer in uniform was shot upon returning to his home after working a tour as a guard for the mayor's home. The list can go on and on.
Why is it that the thugs and criminals in this town think police officers in full uniform are fair game? If armed police officers are not safe from these criminals, what chance does the average citizen have?
The criminals have no fear of the police anymore in this city because the progressive, liberal, socialist politicians and judges have turned the tables on the police and, in turn, on the law abiding citizens. Police officers are routinely sued and disciplined for doing their jobs. Bottom feeding plaintiffs' lawyers get rich because federal judges are prejudiced against law enforcement and through their biased rulings allow criminals to recover millions from the city for alleged police misconduct. The USDC for the Northern District of Illinois has ruled recently that pre trial detainees cannot be strip searched at the County jail and awarded $55 million dollars to the class of felons and arrestees because they were searched for contraband. This happened even though last year a pre trial detainee was able to bring a .380 pistol into the jail after he had been patted down 14 times between his arrest and his intake into the jail.
What is wrong is that the criminal justice system has been turned on its head. Now, every time a police officer makes an arrest he faces the possibility of being accused of excessive force or some other charge. The loud mouthed, self ordained reverends bleat and squeal every time there is a police crackdown on crime instead of supporting the effort to make the streets safer. The left wing federal judges appointed by the democrats hate the concept of law enforcement and are prejudiced against police officers which is evidenced by their rulings.
The jello spined governor was just elected even though he had released almost 1800 convicts last year from the IDOC before they finished their sentences. Last week he pardoned several more and commuted others' sentences to much fanfare from the media.
If you are a low life criminal, the odds are now stacked in your favor. You will serve little or no prison time. You can sue the city and the arresting officer(s) for violating your rights, when you get to jail the sheriff can't search you for weapons or contraband or you will have another suit. The federal judges will bend over backwards to find that the police or corrections department deviated from some process(which was never enumerated in the constitution to begin with) and award you enough money to feed your Jones (whatever it may be) and allow you to get your freak on for a long time.
Under these circumstances, is there any wonder why criminals have no fear of the police, laugh at the criminal justice system and have no qualms about executing uniformed police officers? The time has come for another American Revolution. Throw out the liberal, socialist politicians and their ideologue jurist hand maidens who have gutted law enforcement. Replace them with honest, experienced elected officials and judges who practiced law for a significant amount of time and have proven reputations for respect for the rule of law and the tenets of the constitution. Unless we take back the streets and our political and judicial systems soon, the war against what we know as civilization will be lost.

I don't see it ever getting better either. It can't. The only way things can get better for every honest decent person in this city is for the new mayor to make some serious changes. Get rid of the GPS and the cameras. Allow us to FIGHT CRIME. As long as the GPS is here and the lawyers, reverands, and media demand our heads on platters, this will never end. We need a police force that can move through the streets undetected with no fear of being brought up on charges for trying to make this city safe for humans again.

A lot of officers with under 10yrs (AKA Hair Gel Police) often wish that the old timers (KMA Police) would just retire.

Speaking for myself (8yrs), I am glad that these officers are still around. They have seen the good and bad of CPD. They have seen more officers killed/injured than I had in my academy class. I have always tried to always listen and emulate these officers.

In times like this, they have taught me how to mourn and how to express my anger and frustration. In the end it is the "element" that is killing CPD, not J-Fled. He is not helping us fight the good fight, but rather stopping the fight short.

At times the "new breed" of police untrained and unsafe. I remember my first person with a gun call in A/1. It turned into 20 hair-gels standing in front of the house, hands tucked in the vest cover laughing and joking. A 25+yr officer got out of the bt car, wheel gun drawn, went around the back and found a pistol. After coming back out front he said "this is still a person with a gun call right, not an outdoor roll call"

Later that night at lunch he ridiculed the officers for demonstrating the typical newbie pose (hands in vest). Some new guys talked shit back, but I shut up, knowing that I was wrong.

I have learned more riding 8hrs in a bt car than 6 months in the academy.

This ET could have been any of us. It is times like these that we need to watch out for each other, because the upper brass is certainly not. If you request an ET, make sure to ride by and make sure he is ok instead of just telling the "victim" that he will arrive in a couple hours.

God speed officer.

David Blake, both officers weapons were still in their holsters and that no one is in custody. Two officers killed with head shots in just 90 hours. God help us. It appears to be open season for the execution of police officers who never had a chance to react to their murderers.

My prayers and condolences to their families, friends and loved ones. Rest In Peace, Brothers David and Michael as well as Mr. Peters.

Rio Police Deploy Tanks to Raid Crime Stronghold After Five Days of Unrest

Rio de Janeiro police deployed Navy tanks and armored cars to raid one of the city’s biggest crime strongholds after five days of urban unrest left dozens of scorched vehicles and at least 21 people dead.

One of the tanks drove over a car blocking an entrance to the city’s northern Vila Cruzeiro shanty town, while a truck was on fire nearby, images broadcasted by Globo TV showed. Military Police confirmed the use of Navy tanks in an e-mail statement, without disclosing the number of vehicles deployed.,,,

...Officers have arrested over 150 people since Nov. 21 and seized hand-made bombs, guns, war weapons, dynamite and bottles of gasoline, according to reports on the Military Police’s website.

Before last night, police reported 29 vehicles set on fire by criminals and 21 people dead in connection with the shootings. Globo TV said the toll has risen to 55 vehicles and 23 casualties. Police declined to confirm the number.

There has to be someone to blame for this and the blame must rise to the top. The Mayor, J-Fled, the goofy IPRA and the CCSAO have emasculated a police dept. that for many years made the streets of this city safe. Today, cops don't want to work. Why? Ask Cozzi, Plewa and dozens of others who sit at callback either falsely accused or lingering in purgatory for no reason because the above named individuals cannot do their jobs properly. There is no leadership. There is no morale. You cannot enforce the law on the street with computers and cameras. In the '70s, a college professor named Jonathan Rubenstein did a study of the police and called the book "City Police". In it, he stated "for the patrolman control of the street is everything. If he loses that, he loses the very reason for being who and what he is." We've lost control and I don't know if we will ever get it back. And it is a shame. It's even more of a shame that no one cares. Once the media cycle ends, cops will be left only with other cops. That's why the "me vs them" attitude exists. And the supposed blue wall. And that includes the bosses. In all my years(28)I've only had one boss above Capt ever back me up on a job. The bosses don't even care - only when it suits their agenda or ego. Jesus, J-Fled couldn't even speak to the press without reading from a prepared statement. That should say it all. Later today I'll reflect more, and probably tear up a bit, as I remember the innocent man and the hero who lost their lives yesterday. God Bless them. And God Bless evey member of the CPD.

Words cannot express my grief. To think that these savages can execute police officers, with no outrage publicly expressed my the mayor, and of course the rev.'s. I watched the super. on tv and was sickened by his very visable lack of emotion. He was reading his statement from a sheet of paper. "When some honor roll student" is the victim, the media shows us over and over again what a loss the community will feel, the rev.s are out there saying how they won't rest until justice is served. They have vigils and demand an end to violence in the streets. Where are they today? The citizens of this city should be outraged, and I hope that there are still enough good people left to demand that the police in this city need to take back the streets from these savages. My taxes have skyrocketed, and I am sick of the politicians wasting my hard earned money on their pet projects. We need more police! I know I am old and no one wants to hear stories from the past.

But maybe listening once in a while would be a good idea. (maybe)

When 2 officers (Fahey & O'Brien)
were shot and killed by the wilson brothers ( God bless you Jon)

The city's police went no holds barred to assist in the followup investigation.

I recall officers volunteering from all over the city to assist in any way possible.

Meetings were held enmass, and sharing , by the brass, all information available during the followup did take place daily.

Bosses actually accepted assignments from outside units into their Area and officers were given handouts to follow up...

I'm sure this is being done today but not enough.

The A/2 D units will be up to their ears in followups. You NEVER know when THE call will come in that is the one you need...

If I were a leader I would publicize a call in # manned by a bank of volunteers (pos)
Not just the 311 or 911 but a special link to A/2 by a mobile communications van.

These tips would be screened by the Area personnel and passed out to volunteer officers working days off, furlo, or double shifts etc.

Priority should be given to all Area 2 personnel, tact, gang, and especially beat, along with other units familiar to the vicinity of the crime. No one who volunteers would be turned down.

With the lack of man power and the blind eye of the current administration this influx of volunteers could bypass their apathy if requested and utilized by the Area Commands.

Yes, the word is volunteer.

Cars? They would come from all supervisors et al who had take homes. These take homes would all be called in (ALL) and used as needed by follow up units until the investigation was closed or totally cold.

This would be my suggestion for the crucial 48- hour to week one followup.

Like I said, it's probably all being done while I type, I hope.

God bless you all.

Things will only get worse. The CPD CANNOT fix this. Our hands are tied so f**king tight behind our backs we can barely breath. And what exactly does Weis mean by "squeeze the neighborhood"?? Wasn't it just a few weeks ago that he held that impromptu press conference to announce to the world that he was stripping a Sgt and several officers because the Sgt slapped some sh*tbird in the face? So please Jody Weis explain to us how we can "squeeze" this neighborhood and keep our jobs.

Let me tell you good people of Chicago and Cook County something. If you can go, I would get out of here now. This is not the place to raise a family anymore. Imagine this city 10 years from now after someone like Meeks becomes mayor. Good LORD I cannot imagine. I recommend all you Southsiders, take a day and go sit inside the courtrooms at 727 E. 111th St. Its where they hear probable cause cases. Your head will spin as you watch all the criminals walk out of there one after another with a finding of "no probably cause". Even when the CPD do a great job and arrest these animals, the judges let them walk right back out on the streets. When there are no consequences for your actions, why would you change your behavior?

I forgot one other large PD,

Boston Police Department - 0
---

If you've been keeping score, the LOD deaths of all of the other large city police departments COMBINED are lower than those of the Chicago Police Department alone.

That stat alone is disgustingly tragic.

That alone speaks volumes about how lousy our political and police leadership has become.

The CPD, by itself, has more officers killed violently, in the line, than ALL of the other large US police departments combined.

Just ponder that for a while and tell me why we are not storming City Hall and CPD Headquarters daily.

THAT IS HORRIBLY TERRIBLY WRONG!

I blame Richard M. Daley and Jody P. Weis with minor parts played by many others. Basically it is the vast amount of total systemic corruption plaguing our city and police department that is to blame for the sorry state of affairs here.

And WE are dying because of it!

Another family that will grow up wqithout a husband and father. Another wife who will make the ritual of St Jude parades, honored star case ceremonies, the anguishing process of coming to grips with the overwhelming grief of losing a loved one violently and suddenly.

And the kids, all the milestones in their lives yet to come, without Dad.

It is sickening and this lays right at the doorstep of Richard M. Daley. Thank him. Then thank Jody P. Weis second.

And don't you dare slap an offender because Jody Weis will have you thrown in prison.

So, what now Mr Superintendent? What the fuck now?

Vote, vote and vote. These things happen when ALL of the politicians are liberals. No matter what they say, they are distrustful of the police and any authority. They just can't help themselves, it's in their nature. Do you remember the case of the "friend" of the President and the Campus Police Officer incident? What were the first comments made by the Liberal In Chief? The police acted stupidly. The incident was handled well by the police, the problem was a liberal, community activist college professor with a bad attitude and a big, foul mouth. No matter what happens, a liberal will almost always take the side of ANYONE against those in authority, no matter how wrong they are, they suspect the police each time first.

After that incident, we still got dope and guns in the area and they wernt fuckin scared of the police cause we let up off of them. We shouldv still been hittin that area hard like before. The saturation team wouldv been all over that spot prior to this incident. WTF

slightly ot---not to take away from our fallen brother, but any updates on the 2 officers seriously injured in a car wreck the other night on the west side. i heard serious to life threatening

-----------------------------
Both officers should be ok. One officer already released from the hospital. Other officer still in the hospital as far as I know. He sustained a fractured femur, among other injuries, but I heard he may be released today or tomorrow. Best wishes to both great officers for a speedy recovery.

Rest in peace Officer Flisk and Peters. Thank you for your service. May God watch over their families. And may God watch over the entire CPD family during these trying times.

"...is there any wonder why criminals have no fear of the police, laugh at the criminal justice system and have no qualms about executing uniformed police officers?"

As long as you don't commit "domestic violence," you're pretty much in the clear.

Right, Anita?

Gives a whole new meaning to "sanctuary city," doesn't it?

Jody, you're an asshole. "Squeeze" the neighborhood. You're talking out your ass again. You stripped a tact team and a sgt. for what police are SUPPOSED to do anyways. Some shithead to spat on a sgt. got slapped. Your response was to strip the team for not reporting the boss for the slap. You call a press conference when NOBODY made a big deal out of it but YOU. You aren't combating crime, you're combating police officers. You expect anyone to "squeeze" a neighborhood, Mr. "I gotta run?"

Resign already. The job, which was tolerable five years ago, has become cumbersome and depressing. You are a laughing stock and more police officers have been killed in the line of duty on YOUR watch than have been killed per year than any other year since I've been alive. Our best interest isn't in your lexicon. Please resign and give the job back it's dignity and nobility that it once had. Let someone from the inside take over and we can try and salvage this fucked up department.

I wish we all could be more proactive, however, we who have families and mortgages are petrified of losing it to a non supportive boss like you who is out to railroad cops. You say you have our backs, but you've proven otherwise. Dead cops almost monthly and very good police officers stripped for what are very minor indescretions with SAVAGES. Railroad a cop and put him behind bars and pookie wins the ghetto lottery. I'm RICH BITCH!
