Good Samaritan Slain

  • A man was shot to death as he tried to help a woman being robbed of her purse on the West Side Monday evening, police say.

Bobby Butler, 55, was shot in the abdomen just before 6 p.m. Monday in the Lawndale neighborhood and was pronounced dead at 7:55 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

  • The woman had walked from a nearby "L" stop to her car and was about to get in when she was confronted by a man about 25 to 30 years old who threatened her with a gun, according to a police report. Butler saw what was going on, came up to the robber, tried to stop him, and was shot, according to the report.

The robber ran away. The woman was unharmed, according to police.

Killed trying to do the right thing, after years in prison.

when all you bring to a gunfight is good intentions, don't expect to not be shot dead.

Karma's a motherfucker, ain't it?

Bobby Butler was an umpteen time convicted felon and currently out on parole. Of particular irony is the fact that he's dabbled in armed robberies over the course of his extensive criminal history.

Maybe he'd still be alive had he been in the joint where he belonged instead of being paroled early...AGAIN.

You'll find no sympathy here. Live by the sword, die by the sword (or bullet as is the case here). I'm just glad the innocent would-be victim walked away unscathed.

Risk/Reward Breakdown for Robbing a Woman with a Firearm:

Reward: Whatever she had in her purse.

Risk: Many years in prison for robbery.

Extrapolated risk: Shooting her or a good Samaritan in the process.

Ultimate Risk: Entire Life spent in prison.

You seriously have to question whether or not these thugs even qualify as human beings. Anyone with functional gray matter should be able to quickly see this is not a desirable operating model.

RIP to the Good Sam. If there's a heaven, I'm sure you bought yourself a First Class ticket to get there.

They aren't human; that's the problem. We keep treating them like they are and expect human responses then wonder why that doesn't happen - hence 15 page rap sheets.

West Side Inside Do Nothing, once again you have shown yourself to be the bitter, angry asshole that you truly are. First you wished harm upon your fellow officers and now you talk shit about a man who is dead and can't defend himself.

Yes, he was a convicted felon, yes, he was a bad guy, but are you so low West Side Inside Do Nothing that you must talk ill about the dead? You have no sense of decency and I am glad you work inside and do nothing.

Ex Con or not he tried to do the right thing. Plenty of non ex cons wouldn't have. Hell we have leaders who would have run or driven away from the scene.

People are strange critters sometimes. As a kid I had a fireman neighbor who was an absolute shithead towards his family. Yet the guy was one of the more decorated firemen in the department. It seemed every year or so his name would be in the paper with a photo showing him doing some heroic. Maybe the aggressive personality cut both ways.

Anyway, Mr Butler, I will call him that because of the nature of his death, died doing something right. That has to count for something.

As you get older and watch friends and family lingering with slow horrible diseases getting shot and being called a hero doesn't sound so bad. I prefer to wait till about age 80 though.

A good quote from John Wayne:

The average college kid idealistically wishes everybody could have ice cream and cake for every meal. But as he gets older and gives more thought to his and his fellow man's responsibilities, he finds that it can't work out that way -- that some people just won't carry their load.... I believe in welfare -- a welfare work program. I don't think a fella should be able to sit on his backside and receive welfare. I'd like to know why well-educated idiots keep apologizing for lazy and complaining people who think the world owes them a living. I'd like to know why they make excuses for cowards who spit in the faces of the police and then run behind the judicial sob sisters. I can't understand these people who carry placards to save the life of some criminal, yet have no thought for the innocent victim.

--------

That's a totally horseshit argument to make in this context. I know there's a dogma floating out there that people never change- and a lot of them never do- but sometimes, they most definitely do. Sometimes, sticking them in the joint works. You as cops rarely see those people, since their actions are no longer relevant to your line of work, but they're out there...

This guy just got out- and went to the aid of some broad getting mugged? I'd say that's a pretty damn compelling case for 'turning your life around'.

Male, 20-30 years, 5-09 to 5-11, Black hoodie.

Any type of descriptive help like THE RACE OF THE INDIVIDUAL BAD GUY.
You will be hardpressed to find that little tidbit of information in the paper or on TV news.
Heaven forbid you should mention that his is not a hispanic or white. That would be profiling.

You may have to recalculate your operating model; average time served in Crook County for homicide is still around 7 years.

"Killed trying to do the right thing, after years in prison."

Everyone is a mixture of good and bad. It looks like the good came out in Mr. Butler -- unfortunately at the very end.

The word "atonement" comes to mind here.

It takes great courage to go up against an armed man. Thank you for trying to help.

Rest in peace.

What could'a been really ugly for us turned into a happy ending. Well, not that kind, but you know what I mean.

Westside Outside Do Something Says: Right on my brother.... I'm with W.S.Inside Do Nothing on this one.... This POS probably was on the wrong side of this situaution many times. Who knows how many victims he actually hurt. For some strange reason, probably from thugs balls, he felt he was a bigger bad ass than this JO. I'm sure their was something in it for him in his mind at the time. These POS's are opportunists, nothing more!!!! Unless you were once the Police, YOU will never understand the way they actually are... STFU!

Is this truly a case of a good samaritan?

Or did the stick-up man get stuck-up?

Perhaps we in the land of the living will never know.

We earned the right to be cynical and subject everything we see to a more than healthy dose of shit-eye because there is so much that ain't what it seems to be no matter what lense one tries to filter it through in order to reconcile it to more tender sensibilities.

Heh...

Its because of liberal assholes like you that this country is in the shitter. Make sure you vote for Obama again come next election. Sorry, but I agree with West Side wholeheartedly, the "victim" was a piece of shit time and time again. What goes around comes around.

To 10:32:00 PM:

Fuck off.
There's being cynical, then there's being delusionaly cynical.

If this was Pookie gunned down in a robbery and mama coming in after the fact to say what a great guy he was and how he was 'turning his life around', that's clearly bullshit. This was a guy who did his time, got out, by all accounts was legitimately working hard to get on the right course and died trying to save someone who was being victimized.

I'm not a cop, but I have worked extensively with ex-offenders (and eventual re-offenders). My prism is probably a lot more clear than yours on the issue, since I see both sides of the ball, whereas police only see one. I see the human garbage, destined to reoffend, which is pretty much the only side the police ever see.

The ones you don't see in your line of work are the guys who want no part of ever going back. You don't see them since they're not involved with the police, anymore.

As best I can tell, the breakdown is about 50/50. Half leave it behind, the other half are destined to go back. Shitting on this guy who was killed trying to do the right thing is pathetic and REALLY, REALLY speaks of someone who 'shouldn't be the police'. Yours is a lame, tribal, gang-like mentality that serves no one but others like you.

Thankfully, I know not all cops are that way. More cynical than most? Sure, and understandably so, but thankfully, most are bright enough to realize when things are different.
