Officer Killed

POST MOVED from 22 NOV 10, 2145 hours to remain at the top.

Officer killed off-duty in an apparent robbery.

  • An off-duty Chicago police officer was shot to death in his personal car on the Southwest Side this evening, authorities said.

    Police responded to a call of shots fired on the 2900 block of West Seipp Street about 6:30 p.m. and found a man unresponsive in a car after apparently having been shot, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien.

    The man shot to death was an officer assigned to a Southwest Side district who was off-duty at the time and was shot in his personal car, sources said.

With tremendous sadness, I stood outside on the corner near my home and watched with a heavy heart as the procession of cars drove up Western Ave. As each officer stood at attention and the cars sped by, I began to cry.

I mourn your loss and will keep the officer, his family, friends, and co-workers in my prayers.

I as a citizen of chicago appreciate the hard work and sacrifices that the CPD make everyday.

Surely we have lost control of the streets for the sake of pure politics, meanness and spite. We know the principals won't lose any sleep because it's "just another cop."

This city rots to the Heavens. The principals have no interest in setting a real course of correction because they've managed to outsmart themselves in teaching us a "lesson." They own this atrocity in it's entirety.

They have blood on their hands.

Too many people and way too many Police Officers getting their eyes closed at the hands of subhumans who feel safe enough to walk the world of civilized men and commit these acts with impunity because the guardians have been decimated and driven into self preservation.

Some way... Some how... This must stop.

Protect yourselves. Protect your partners families and friends at all costs. Go home to your families in one piece. That's all that matters now.

Everything else can fend for itself.

We need training and different scenarios for how to handle off duty incidents! This is imperative!!! Too many of us are losing this battle because we don't know how to react. The department has never trained us for off duty incidents!! This should be effective immediately! I often think when I am standing in line at the bank what if some moron walks in here with a gun--how will I take action? What about when I have my kids with me? How will I take action? Female officers often have their gun in their purse--what do they do when moron shows you a gun and demands your purse? The department keeps spending big money on all these classes they need to invest in training us for off duty incidents before we lose another brother or sister.
God Bless You Officer. Your work is done but we will continue to fight the battle in your name.

It just makes me think about loss. We see it everyday and we try to deal with it the best way that we can, hoping that time will heal some of the pain. But I must say, that time after time after time after time again, the void becomes deeper and harder to look into and feel. There are no words, only saddened emotions that run deeper than life. Once again, the sadness has found an even deeper place in our souls. The only thing left is the thought that he is with God, in a better and more peaceful place than we could ever imagine. This is greater than me, than I could ever understand, in the hands of a God that I believe in, but don't know the answers or the reasons for the things that happen. I guess thats called Faith. Peace be with You...and your family, both Blood and Blue.

There are enclosed tow trucks and at least three tow services within a 50 mile radius of Chicago that have them. Average cost per tow is 800 dollars.
