Rumors of Swiping - And More
Like clockwork, this damn rumor keeps popping up over and over:
- But has anyone heard about an order set to be released soon stating that ALL sworn personnel will swipe in and out beginning at 0000 hrs. on 01 Jan. 2011 ????
This has been rumored to have been started in October, November, December, 1st Police Period next year, etc. And no one can ever seem to nail it down.
Anyone have any info at all?

They are getting $805 for duty availability starting 01JAN11. We don't get that until 2012.

One wonders how much time does one put in to starting these rumors. The swiping is bull and the gun team change is bull. All rumors do is create stress to gullible people. Especially around the holidays.
I was told a few years back that the cpd&cfd would probably never be the ones swiping in & out. The reason given was it would create an ot debacle because of the hours that we sometimes work. It would throw the system off.
Even tho some units on cpd & some parts of the cfd already do use it. But the people at the station would be a problem if they had us do it because of the hours we do.
I thought we were supposed to swipe in/out at the beginning of last year too but they put a halt on it a couple days prior to it taking effect.
All the clocks that are located in stations etc. the company is out of business and there is no way to maintain them. This rumor is bs. As for the gun teams this is a fact.
Gun Teams rumor is true-swipe in rumor is partly true. Swipe in/out is delayed for now. Too many bugs still not fixed in system. Eventually the swipe in/out will be used to augment the A and A's and work as an automated payroll.
Being retired I think its a good idea if you youngsters sign in and out, I need you guys to pay into the pension every day so I can get that check on the first. And us retired guys need a way to make sure you guys are paying.
For those of you who might be a bit slow witted(mostly college educated) this was H U M O R
Ot, 025 DST has 17 openings, that's unheard of, but giving that we lost a few bodies to MSF, so did every other DST. 011 and 008 have 15 openings, also unheard of. The usuals are still there 004, 005 and 007. So, they are beginning to shift more bodies into Districts with the most police service calls (BS calls). SCC, WTF is wrong with this picture?
OCD is a joke.
I heard 06 Jan 11 the Gun Teams would be realigned under the power of OCD, but that they would stay in their respective Areas. They would no longer be controlled by Deputy Chiefs. But I could see them disbanding them and building them back up with their own applicants. So when are they getting rid of the Deputy Chiefs, they really don't have anything to do now?!
It will never work. The Kronos system needs one person per watch to fix all the bad swipes.
I know this sytem very well. I used it in 2 prior jobs. 1 missed swiped unfixed creates a whirlwind of work if not balanced daily. Imagine that with a couple a hundred coppers. And 50% forgetting to swipe.
Screw them. I don't even know where the swipe machine IS in my district...and furthermore, I don't care. I'll be happy to nitpick for OT in 15 minute increments.

That needs to stop.
It is possible to have every one at CPD swipe in and out and keep a record of those times. The real problem lies in what do you do with that information? Linking it to payroll is difficult because of the different hours. But, if you want to keep track of what time people come in and out, that is possible. I worked with the Kronos system for years in private industry after retiring from the job. Supervisors would have an override ability, but they would leave a paper trail. And, supervisors never swiped in at the corporation I worked at. And, there was a camera in the ceiling aimed at the Kronos machine. Never say never!!!

Believe what you want, but they are working on it. Did you think 4 & 2 was a gift from a grateful City? They are only fighting about the time clock, and who gets that money.
They may as well. We are no longer a calling, or a profession. We are a job and that's all. There is no pride on this Department.

Half the machines don't work and in addition, they need to put more of them in around the stations. Half the guys work ID's don't work either.WTF

How about once again you are wrong. CFD got the same as CPD.
January, 2011- Both go to $755.00
January, 2012- Both go to $805.00
Who cares what the fireman get? We got a new schedule. They lost some of there manning issues. Our 55 healthinsurance has no limitations on it. Theres does. Quit crying and be glad you have a job. Talk to some of your neighbors and ask them how shitty it is out there. Us and CFD have it pretty good.
Who cares? I work in a unit that swiping in and out is "mandatory" and there are many days that numerous people do not either swipe in, swipe out, and swipe in or out. Nothing happens. Take a drink and relax.
Swiping cannot be tied to the payroll system period. Never gonna happen.

Maybe it is time for the dept to get rid of or cut some of these specialized units and especially some of the useless spots. With tact teams and gang teams do we really need gun teams? Aren't gun pinches really what we're all looking for anyways? I see the need for a roving unit like tru or msf to saturate a dist with manpower when necessary, but do we really need 2 units like this? And these units vacate the need for saturation teams. Let's also do a serious cleansing of 35th street and all other inside spots. Combine positions...give the insiders more responsibilities. Where else can we clean?

They'll try to enforce it, but people will actually forget, and "forget" to swipe in and out, and it will become such a boondoggle they can't do anything about it but give up.
well, keep filling the swiper with super glue and that will end the swipe in and out... it will take them 3 weeks to come out and fix the machine if you fill it with super glue.. keep doing it and they eventually will stop the swipe process. thats what we did when it was piloted in our district... hopefully there enough savvy coppers out there still who can do this kind of stuff and just dont follow along like sheep...
The police department should be excluded from this type of monitoring. We are suppose to be a " Semi-Military Institution " right? You know... with rank, structure, uniforms etc. Right? We are suppose to have " Roll Call " starting our " Tour " and " Check OFF roll call " ending the tour. The watch commander or any of our supervisor's ensure that officer's are present to start and accounted for safely at the end. Remember? If we are expected to swipe in and out like security guards at the super mall then our " Semi-Military Institution " is not using its command structure. If the watch commander decides that your tour is done then that's it. That's his job. He should not have to worry about a computer clock shadowing the tour. If the city is concerned about time use then the focus should be on supervision, not clocks. If swiping is true then they are further dismantling police department idealism beyond any useful purpose.

Arbitrator's decision. FOP does NOT have a me-too clause with CFD/Local 2.
CFD/Local 2 DOES have a me-too clause, so they were going to do no worse than what we got, however, if they get more, we will not get that since we do NOT have the me-too.
$300 more and you could have been a fireman.

35th St has been cleaned. The building is a ghost town that's why there's room for cfd to occupy the 3rd floor.

This would cost a boat load and there would be no return in savings. The way we do things now works just fine and there is no need to fix it.
I'll be paid for all my missed lunch times.
Swipe to be implemented, and Supervisors will be fully responsible for checkoff in ALL Units. Duck-outs will be officers AND Supervisors problem if caught. Be careful, and be safe, camras ARE everywhere in CPD..

I haven't swiped ever. They told us a couple of years ago to start swiping but I figured I would test the system. I haven't missed a paycheck and no one says a thing. More smoke & mirrors. Our commander at the time said it wasn't hooked up to anything so why bother. That was good enough for me. One of the rare times of a commander telling the truth.

We trained hard, but it seemed that every time we were beginning to form up into teams we would be reorganized. I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganizing; and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralization.
Confusion, inefficiency, and demoralization are nothing new around the CPD, in fact it seems to be the constant state of being.

Charlton Ogburn's quote, which appeared in an article published by Harper's Magazine in 1957, hits right on target at CPD, where change equals progress.
cpd personel do not get paid for thier lunch, this means that not only do you have to swipe in at the beginning of your tour and at the end, but at the beginning of their lunch and also at the end. can't happen. unless they say the tour of duty includes 30 minutes for lunch.
