Scam Alerts

NBC is reporting an outfit is raising money based on the recent CFD tragedy:
  • A North Carolina company has stopped selling a controversial decal commemorating Chicago's most-recent fallen firefighters and has lodged a complaint with the city's Inspector General claiming harassment.

Firefighters claim the company was being opportunistic and trying to profit from tragedy, but the company says it's all just a big misunderstanding.
Now we're also hearing about some unauthorized fund raising on the south side in the name of Officer Flisk that might have no connection to the Department whatsoever.

As far as we know, the only authorized fund raising for the Flisk family is the account at the Credit Union. If anyone has any info on this or other suspicious events, let us know. Officers need to be aware of where their donations are going and who is collecting on behalf of the fallen.

There is a law in Illinois that helps protect against scams such as this. State Senator Walter Dudycz was very influential in getting it passed in the General Assembly, the other was Attorney General Jim Ryan. Maybe the present day Attorney General should be made aware of the law.

PENSION CHANGES
with Chicago Park District Security

The park district will be hiring off-duty officers for security after the new year.

Just so everyone knows the pension is changing for new guys getting hired. You will have to work to age 67 to get any kind of small pension.

I think I will pass on the job.

The Flisk fundraising thing is an alumnus from St John Fisher school who is doing fundraising on his own. He did not clear it with the family or any police organization prior to going door to door.
This was announced 2 weeks ago at all the masses as a scam, then retracted last Sunday as an alumnus trying to do something for the family. Sounds like someone with good intentions who didn't think it through. All in all, I would give to the account at the Crecit Union folks. Much more secure, and you can be sure that it will go to the right place.

There will always be dirtbags out there eager to profit from the tragedy of others.

The only thing you can do is be aware of it and report it when you see it.

Another SCAM ALERT

Did this happen to anyone else?

Last week, doorbell rings, but I was in back yard. A crew of all M/1's in cold weather "uniforms" that looked like a utility company was working both sides of the street. The names on the jackets and they introduced them selves as something like "Freedom Energy".

This guy started out door to door friendly and wanted to see my GAS bill saying that there were big increases on the way and that his company can save us thousands every year.

I work midnights and was in no mood anyway so I told him to send it in the mail. With that he got real arrogant like he was trained by ACORN and why did I as a hard working homeowner have any right to refuse him. He got louder and as I walked away he shouted from across the street, "Good luck with your gas bill!"

This sounded like a scam; I should have called 9-1-1 as Suspicious Men. Did anyone else get this and that was the company name of these jerks?

2:45, they are kind of legit....they do door-to-door sales for a natural gas reseller. Usually they just take no for an answer and go on their way, you must have gotten a guy who got one too many Nothankyou responses.

When they work their door-to-door up North, people are calling us for suspicious people.

IT'S RAHM OR SOMEBODY ELSE.

Listening to 890 WLS on the way home from the funeral today. Chico came off well. Said Police and Fire are different when it comes to the pension. Get a transcript, or listen to a replay.

He spoke well and said some good things. It can't be RAHM. It's Chico, so far, for me.

(OT) Great news pension bill is signed! daley is having a stroke great job QUINN Thank you!
Pension Legislation Update 12/30/10

Governor Quinn signed SB 3538 into law today. This legislation creates a two-tiered pension system for future hires. The legislation does not have any negative impact on current members of the Pension Fund.

Most importantly, the legislation guarantees the solvency of our Pension Fund by implementing a thirty-year ARC. Starting in 2015 the City of Chicago will be required to increase contributions to the Fund in order to bring the Fund to a 90% funded rate by the year 2040.

Both President Mark Donahue and IAFF Local 2 Political Action Director Dan Fabrizio should be commended for their hard work in ensuring that the City of Chicago will finally be required to properly fund our pensions.

Peterson, as the D/S, this is your fault, crime scene protection has fallen apart. I am definitely not one to write up officers for little shit, but our crime scene protection is atrocious.

How can you expect an ET to process a scene and watch their back? How about assigning a K9 to each ET job? Most K9 jobs are not emergencies, there is no reason they couldn't handle it.

The gas scam is probably by Nicor A few years back same kind of person came to the door and asked if I wanted to save on my gas bill This one was wearing a uniform with something that started out with a US or USA making you believe they were from the federal government When I said no they asked if I would sign a petition to try and get controls on the price of natural gas and lower the price of natural gas Actually it was a contract to switch to Nicor. Told them to leave and asked just who they represented and they got mad Then told them to get the fuck off my porch
Later I read it was A SCAM TO GET YOU TO SWITCH FROM pEOPLE gAS WITHOUT EVENKNOWING IT. bECAUSE YOU WERENT AWARE OF THE SWITCH YOU COULDNT CANCEL THE CONTRACT WITHIN THE 3 DAY CANCELLATION LAW
