Nice Job Officers

  • A police officer tackled a carjacking suspect who officials say crashed a stolen taxi after a wild chase through several suburbs.

The high-speed chase -- in which the carjacker ran through stoplights, around vehicles and crossed into oncoming traffic -- originated in Des Plaines around 6 a.m. Wednesday. The chase continued through at least five suburbs, including Morton Grove, Niles, Skokie and Evanston, and ended with a car crash just before 7 a.m. at North Clark and West Columbia in Rogers Park.

Just before he was captured, the driver clipped a school bus, partially tearing off the front bumper of the bus, and hit a light pole. He then climbed out of the vehicle through the driver's side window and was chased on foot by Chicago police, who tackled and arrested him after he slipped on an ice patch.

The chase was extensively covered on the news and showed only the professionalism of the department on full display. Nothing untoward on display, no question about actions. In short, exactly what the overwhelming majority of officers, city and suburban, do day in and day out, even when the cameras aren't on.

Did you see this savages rap sheet. My God. Twenty some odd fellony arrests. 6 convictions. Been doing armed robberies since '95. Nice career choice. I am sure he was just about to turn his life around before the SUBWAY clerk attacked him for no reason. Wanted to study electrical engineering. Cook County justice, farce.

Saw this incident reported on ABC7 yesterday morning right after the chase ended. A news helicopter hovered overhead transmitting live video, as Roz Varron narrated. Offender tried to flee on foot but was quickly captured. Great job by the officers.

Ms. Varron's narration was factual and objective, but unfortunately she was interrupted repeatedly by her colleague, HOSEA SANDERS. Sanders found it necessary to interject his take on the matter, saying "Oh my goodness, another police chase... these things usually end up hurting innocent bystanders", (or similar words to this effect). I'm sure others noticed this too. He kept this up repeatedly throughout Varron's report. Nothing of substance to contribute, just tossing in his personal commentary.

He made sure to malign the suburban coppers for chasing the robbery offender in the first place, as well as the city coppers for continuing the chase and ultimately capturing him. ABC7's racist, cokehead POS phrased his statement a little differently each time he said it, but his message was clear: He disapproves of police chases under any circumstances and hates all police in general and is incensed that the fleeing forcible felon was not just left alone by the evil PO-leeses and allowed to escape in the carjacked vehicle.

Ole boy just couldn't stand to watch good police work without tossing in some cheap shots calculated to remind viewers that (according to him) there is no such thing as good police work. PUNK.

The timing of this is beyond perfection! For the last couple of days we've been lectured at roll call about the "evils" of the car chase. They even played some old streaming video from Hillard's(sp?) day which basically told everyone NOT TO CHASE.

With everything I've read so far about it, the public is pleased that this shit head was caught. I just hope that the powers that be don't try to screw over the fine work the officers in 024 did.

The takedown should be shown at the academy (if we ever hire any more police), for the recruits to learn how it should be done. Great job by the officer. As I was watching the chase unfold on the news, all I could see was the line of cars from other cities about half a block back. As soon as they said he was entering Chicago streets I knew the chase was over. Sure enough, a few blocks later, dude was in custody. Made me proud! Nice job to all!

I agree with SCC in context.
(Obviously) a GREAT job, but that's what we do on a daily basis, however without recognition.
I've lost faith in Ch. 9 lately, and maybe I'm thinking like a cynical copper again, but... me thinks da' media would have been more satisfied if a copper acted unprofessionally during/after the takedown.
After all, they portrayed the story as a 'chase' not what it really was; a career criminal with an extensive rap sheet that should (still) be in jail after yet another robbery, along with 'professional' police work that followed, by all involved.
They won't say it, but I'll reiterate what SCC indicated,
simply put... "Nice Job Officers!"

In case it hasn't been pointed out, this officer was the same guy who was in a horrific car accident while working a couple years ago. He literally had to be cut out of the car. He sustained major injuries-among them, a cracked pelvis. Unlike many cops who would consider it a career ending incident, Mike (already committed to his health & fitness) stuck to his rehab and came back better than ever. Great job, Mike. How is that a good job?

If you are chasing someone for a violent felony then you are chasing them.

It is called a vehicle pursuit.

The dispatcher needs to tell everyone what intersection the offender is at, so none of the responding coppers get killed.

If the CPD bosses do not have the balls to authorize a pursuit of a violent felon, then the officers and dispatchers should not cover for their cowardice by pretending there is no pursuit.
