So, was Sneed wrong? Or is this a change from what was leaked? Or another classic case of misdirection by Shortshanks Rahm and the Machine before naming someone not even on the list?
Garry McCarthy — the director of the Newark, N.J., police department — emerged as the odds-on favorite to become Chicago’s next police superintendent on Friday.
The Chicago Police Board is recommending that Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel pick McCarthy or one of two Chicago Police insiders with less experience to replace police Supt. Jody Weis, whose contract expired in March.
The other finalists are Chicago Police chief of patrol Eugene Williams and Debra Kirby, a deputy superintendent overseeing the Chicago Police Department’s Bureau of Professional Standards. But only McCarthy was on Emanuel’s separate list of top contenders.
We're pretty sure Rahm stated he wanted a Chicago guy (or gal) in charge. But someone is pushing for McCarthy awfully hard to make Spielman and Main write this stuff that's so obviously different from the line Sneed was selling.
And word from HQ is the exempts are in-fighting pretty heavily trying to line up support for keeping their spots (or advancing) once the new supernintendo takes over.

I think that the new Jersey guy has it, due to all of the infighting,and when he takes over it will be "dump city" more changing seats on the titanic nothing new here move along! i hope that kirby does not get anything but a demotion!
I still would say don't be so quick to count out Wysinger or Kirby.
Another dark horse? Brian Murphy, a shortshanx ball warmer well insulated in his new post of ADS, a spot formerly held by the (formerly) insulated O'Keefe. Bet most people on the Dept. don't even know where he is, or what he does, which is what Murphy and Shanx would want. Like, for the next 5 or so years, until Murphy would then come out of hiding and begin to collect his undeservedly high pension too. The ultimate ghost payroller he would be, right under everybody's nose, with little or no responsibilities for years to come, and for all that time, collecting a very good salary. Isn't it grand to have friends in high places who will place you wherever they can in an organization, even hiding you out in plain sight before they leave their extremely privileged high profile world?
With the damage control Kirby did with SOS and keeping any gold stars from taking a hit she should be a shoe in. She was a good soldier and did exactly what was asked of her.
Yeah, first we had a list of three candidates from the Police and Fire Board, then we hear about Rahm conducting the same process in parallel, and he releases a completely different list of three tonight.
Sorry, but it's like watching two carloads a bangers paralleling each other down a busy street, yelling back and forth.
It is just my imagination, or has the makeup girl from the election been paid off and sent home now -- the Ballerino is starting to look like crap again with the perennial five-o-clock shadow and his natural raccoon-circles under the eyes...
The Reverend Gene Williams has the solid backing of the con man reverends of the west side. Dont count him out. He has jesus on his side!
Kirby is a 19 Ward hack who has never done much more than run the Area #2 Log down to HQ every morning. She wansn't trusted to actually do any police work so she stayed inside, studied to be a lawyer and the rest is 19th Ward history. She loved screwing working polce officers as she never was one and like most who never were has a true hatred for them.

The working police officer and the supervisor who gives a crap about who they work with AND the citizens will come out big time ahead if McCarthy gets the spot. Nobody, and I mean nobody wins if Kirby gets it.
Bodies were dropping all over the City last night according to Chicago breaking news. Why would anybody promote Gene Williams to Superintendent? Williams and his next up in the chain of command Downtown Ernie Brown are a direct reason why there will be so much blood shed this summer. All these goofs do is screw with people in patrol, from patrolmen all the way to captain. More reports, more silly deployment zones, deployment action zones, more details, more event numbers and missions. Don't these guys get it? If you keep fucking with the people you count on (and take a guess they aren't the exempt member of the department) sooner or later they will have had enough. IF you do a good job these days they just dump more work in your lap, what the point? Since EB has been running the show I have put the brake on. Gene Williams will be no different.

Gene was and is the real police. He and JJ both earned their chops as Sgt's in 004. I think Gene has a grasp on what it takes to run this Dept. and having the Rev's in his corner is not a bad thing. Kirby on the other hand, forgetaboutit.
Fuck them all. Nothing is going to change for the beat cop on the streets.
I say bring on McCarthy. Yes he's an "outsider" but, unlike our last one JFRAUD, McCarthy has a proven track record in local law enforcement. JFRAUD had nothing but his FEEB career on his resume. We all know how that worked out with JFRAUD.
McCarthy could be the breath of fresh air this department so sorely needs.
According to the Sun Times McCarthy is head and shoulders above the other 2. In other words if Rahm chooses someone from within he's settling for 2nd or 3rd best.
Annoint McCarthy and let's see what he's got.
Like it or not, Kirby has actually done something on this Department. Can't say the same for Gene, or most of the Exempts on this job.
As for McCarthy, his drunken rant (a physical assault) against two POs for writing a ticket to his daughter for PARKING IN A HANDICAPPED SPACE should more than give you pause. No thanks, we have enough bone heads on this job already. I honestly think they are doing this as a jag for his spoiled brat comments the last time they passed him over.
hopefully the new boss will make kirby go out and buy a new crown cap that fits her little melon--- then put her in charge of the toilet paper procurement department because she has a knack for cleaning shit up....

Whenever HAD to deal with her in A/2, she could not contain her contempt of the working copper. Treats people like they are filth, unless she perceives the person to be more powerful than her, and then, and only then, will she fake a smile and suck up like a giddy school girl. Seen it many times. She is a condescending POS.

Someone is either manipulating the press in order to throw the public off the mark or this misdirection is the result of political pressure being applied to some end of which I am not certain. As an earlier poster pointed out: by Rahm promising to put one of our own in the Superintendent's slot and then he ends up putting in another outsider is going to be a problem for him. Many of us had high hopes that Wysinger would get the slot. In my opinion, out of all the candidates, Wysinger will do us the most good, maintain our integrity, bolster the morale of our organization and move us back to where we should be. We shouldn't have to sweat another outside guy with some different agenda, totally removed from the reality of what our organization does and the family that we are. It's going to put another bullet in our already declining morale. I'm also concerned that they just floated Al's name to placate a few folks and then might turn around and push Chief Brown or Williams, both of whom were touted on Channel 5. Where did that suddenly come from?

Not true. Debbie was hell of a police officer, when she worked in 005. She worked midnights because she was in law school. She was always the first car on the scene and never shirked her duties. I am not a fan of Debbie's but, right is right.
Just a citizen here, but it makes sense to me that the job should be given to someone who knows the CPD already.
As evidenced by our current Pres, learning on the job is not the right way. GIVE THE JOB TO A CHICAGO POLICE PERSON! No outsiders as that just seems to cause strife and resentment amongst the rank and file and that is exactly NOT what we should have!

It is so pathetic that we can't come up with someone worthy from our own ranks. Just because J-Fled was an "outsider", don't let it poison your thinking on McCarthy. He gets much praise from both NYPD and Newark FOP Lodge 12. Check it out.

By law, he has no choice. He is required to choose one of the 3, or send all back to the Board for a new set of 3 names.
As a woman officer, we don't need Debra Kirby to ruin things for a first lady supe. Did she ever make any felony arrests? Aside from being bright, she's nothing more than a 19th ward brown nose with no respect. Spare us. I could support a lady if she were the real police. It's not Kirby.

When McCarthy comes in he will bring two or three friends just like the other guy. It will take him two years to figure out our system and who in our command staff if anyone that is worth keeping. We as a Department and a city do not have two years to give, we need a superintendent that can come in and make the correct moves needed to right the ship immediately!
I would pick a copper from patrol with 20 years on, and with cr numbers up the Ass, i bet he would turn this Dept around,

That is why she is a top choice.
What is wrong with her is what makes her so right for Rhamster.
It seems that most comments posted are those of personal opinion and not taking into consideration of how future America and policing strategies are shaping to be. The choice that most of us sensibly would like is chosen in relation to our daily activity. Patrol and investigative services are of equal importance and both internal nominees are more than capable of administring the necessary steps to keep our great city adapting to new policing methods and technologies.
The Chief of Patrol's administrative duties in a police department the size of Chicago is, at minimum, equivalent to that of a number one position in a city three quarters the size of this department.
It is our nature to critique and to comment, but we have very capable person(s) already on the list (internally) to choose from. No disrespect to any other qualified personnel.
Crime prevention methods and policing strategies in Chicago are very unique in nature and vary by block. What works on Alaska is sure to be unique and no template of theirs will fit that of another city with similar index and non index crimes.
The experience gained by being within should greatly enhance the decision making process and gain the support and respect of all citizens.
Good luck to our candidates and wish to see the best for our city and the citizens of Chicago.

McCarthy is a policeman and someone who did come up thru the ranks in a police department. Maybe not ours, but that isnt such a bad thing.
I don't consider the police from another jurisdiction as an outsider, but I consider a federal agent as an outsider.
And that could be what Rahm meant, hiring a supt who came up through the ranks of the department. Rahm just didn't say which department.
The only other "most" logical contender for supt is Wysinger. Remember we've got alot of unqualified shit left running this department. The pickins are mighty slim.
I worked with Deb,005 Midnights back in the day, she was a worker and a good person. She made Det off the list, and went to Area Two. Always was easy to work with, and would go to bat for us with the ASA's Office with our felony arrests. I do not understand all of the hate.
The new Sup. will be someone who hasn't a clue about being the police. daley will have Rahms ear & will coach him in the way that he (daley) and his father ran the Dept. The democratic crime org doesn't want the working police to be in charge (they never are). Get ready for a "rahming". Never bend over without someone covering your behind.

The "drug czar", Gil Kerlikowske, withdrew his name from consideration for superintendent Thursday night. Poor reviews from the Seattle and Buffalo Police Departments.

You are a liar. I have been in contact with FOP Lodge 12 (Newark PD) as well as the NYPD, both PBA and otherwise. Garry McCarthy is the real deal and is respected by most, both as a street cop and NYPD brass. The Palisades Pkwy. incident in Jersey did indeed occur. Shit happens.
The two CPD choices of the Police Board are LOSERS who command little if any respect.
We will be so fortunate to get Garry McCarthy as our next superintendent.

Wow, looks like a certain MSF Sgt. (J.C.) who just got detailed out due to being the lowest Sgt. is out bragging that he will be back Stronger then ever, because he knows McCarthy from the police football team and that he now will get a big job, this goof really thinks that his family name is sacred on this job. He was a goof as as PO and remains a goof.
I worked with both Gene Williams and Debbie Kirby when they were both at Area #2. Both were hard working coppers that geve the job 100% everyday. When Debbie was working the Tact Team in 005, she was the real police. Gene worked in Violent Crimes (as it was called back then) and backed up every person in the unit. I've sat and read each of the comments that were made about these two and I can tell you that both of them had more balls than 98% of the Chicago Police Department. If you want a Cop's cop then you better wish that either of them get the call. Just so you know, Debbie is the third generation of Chcago Police and she let everyone she worked with know that she was the REAL POLICE. We all know that Politics helps, but at 3:00 AM at 101st & Eberhardt,if you stop a car the Alderman isn't around; it's you and your partner. She wa always ready, willing and ABLE. As for Gene, if you needed anyone to go with you to kick down a door, Gene was there and he was willing to kick the door in for you. He wasn't sleeping in the hole. Neither of them ever "took the mail downtown" they were too busy working while too many guys and gals on the Midnights were sleeping. Both odf them have the credentials to take this police department and bring it back to what it used to be. Actually it would be my hope that one of them would be the Supt and the other the 1st Deputy. Then you would see some REAL change in the CPD.
