Columbo Dead

Although we prefer, "Serpentine Shel! Serpentine!"
  • Peter Falk, the gravel-voiced actor who became an enduring television icon portraying Lt. Columbo, the rumpled raincoat-wearing Los Angeles police homicide detective who always had "just one more thing" to ask a suspect, died Thursday. He was 83.

  • The show often made light of Columbo's lack of fashion sense. Taking note of the detective's tatty attire, a suspect once asked him, "Are you undercover?" Replied Columbo, "No, underpaid."

Ah, but his clearance rate was nearly a hundred percent, as opposed to many expensively attired, but useless 'detectives' on our department.

RIP, Peter Falk. You had a good ride and gave us all some great memories.

I loved "Columbo" and the charactor Peter Falk portrayed. Falk always seemed to put the bad guy at ease at first playing stupid and unkempt. Columbo then made the bad guy worry because the bad guy wasn't sure if Columbo was dumb or really on to something. It was the best when Columbo solved the crime and put the bad guy away. The bad guy never expected it. Good writing, good acting, good show.
Goodbye Columbo.

OT- Mr McCarthy. I noticed in you video from St. Sabina that you kept using the the word "we" when talking about New York.
"We" is now Chicago for you! Chicago is NOT New York! Chicago does not aspire to be New York as you may have thought in Newark. Another thing. Chicago is an outpost of eastern seaboard liberal thinking. This is the midwest. Chicago is not the center of east coast liberalism. If you travel 50 miles west, south or north, youll find nothing but people who have views on gun control that are completely opposite of yours.
Good Luck Kid!

It says something about the man when no one has a bad word to say about him. A man who chose life over making more money. RIP.

You don't have to go 50 miles, even. Indiana touches this God forsaken toxic welfare haven. Wisconsin has concealed carry. DuPage County isn't full of liberal dummies. The problem is these fools from here, Evanston and Oak Park. Damn upper middle class socialists. But they're only socialist when it comes to you. They're special.

The In-Laws. My husband and I loved that movie. But the movie Husbands, with Ben Gazzara and John Cassavetes about the male mid-life crisis is a classic too. If you haven't seen it, check it out.

God bless him.

RIP. I bet he never had to suspend a case or classify a homicide as a "death investigation" for the sake of numbers.

That depends almost entirely on how old you are and when you were hired. It is simple arithmetic. The people down at the pension board can help you out with that one.

I'll tell you how famous Columbo was.

I used to have a Polish lady come every couple of weeks to clean up my apartment. Janina didn't speak much English, but she cleaned good, and sometimes she brought me pierogi.

A long time back, someone came out with a series of "Columbo" novels in paperback. I had one with Peter Falk on the cover.

Janina saw it and recognized "Columbo". When I mugged the "just one more thing" shtick, she nodded and laughed.

And as I said, she barely spoke English.

Just A Civilian (who likes some fictional detectives)

Great character & a great show & a great man.

Almost 40 years ago I watched an episode where in the dialouge Columbo offers a riddle.

If my memory serves me correct it was this:

There are three bags of gold.

Some bags are filled with real gold coins and some bags are filled with fake gold coins.

You're told a real gold coin weighs one pound, one ounce & a fake gold coin weighs only one pound.

You are given the use of a scale to weigh whatever you want; provided however, you will only get the opportunity to weigh something one time, getting one weight reading.

How can you identify which bag/s are filled with real gold coins and which bags are filled with fake gold coins?

RIP Mr. Falk

I can't believe that someone said that no one had ever quoted "serpentine, serpentine" before! One of my all time favorite lines from one of my all time favorite movies. Bless Peter Falk. May he rest in peace. He really brought joy to many people.

I agree with you. The point I was trying to make is that the east coast liberal attitude is actually a minortiy in the midwest. Especially in the areas you mentioned.Back east, the liberal mindset extends from New England to Washington DC.

To Anonymous 6/26 12:27:

The riddle was featured in the episode entitled "The Bye Bye Sky High I.Q. Murder Case" during the sixth season.

It also contains a passage I'll never forget which can only best be described as "The Creed of Lt. Colombo".

And you know what REALLY bites? He NEVER got promoted to Captain!

May he rest in peace. He truly gave an amazing perofmance.
