Candle Light Vigil

The annual event is coming up Tuesday evening:
  • The 2011 Candlelight Vigil will be held on Tuesday, September 13th at 7:30 pm in Gold Star Families Memorial and Park. All police officers, their families, and friends are invited. The ceremony is expected to last an hour, and will take place rain or shine.

As part of the tradition of the Candlelight Vigil, the names of all 557 Chicago police officers who died in the line of duty will be read. If anyone would like to read a particular name, please contact Beata Staszewski of the Special Events Unit at 5-5253.

Gold Star Familes Memorial and Park is located on Chicago Park District grounds near Waldron Drive (in the shadow of Soldier Field). Uniformed CPD personnel will direct attendees to the free parking lot at the 18th Street exit off of Lake Shore Drive.
We believe last year, every district sent one or two cars for the event and the turnout was exceptional. This year, with the beautiful weather on tap, should be even bigger.

Why do we have a candle light vigil in the wake of 9/11?
Shouldnt this event held in May to coincide w/Police Week?

Can't speak for the time of year (in the wake of 9/11 vs during traditional May coincidental with Police Week) but I went to the CPDMF candlelight vigil and it was AWESOME!!! McSupe gave an energetic speech, Rahm sounded almost believable and everything went off without a hitch. So, so many people, not just the families and friends of the CPD but citizens who came by to pay their respects. J-Fled was there to gloat and had a small band of fed rats with him. I don't know how many years the good lord will grace me with but I'll never miss a single vigil.

When the Memorial first opened in 2006 the fight over who was the first police officer killed in the line of duty was still unsettled. The Memorial and its historians, retired Captain O'Sullivan and Dennis Bingham, claimed it was Casper Lauer, who was killed on Sept. 18th 1854. However, Rick Barrett, a retired DEA Agent, had unearthed original city records showing the first LODD was Constable James Quinn, who died of duty related injuries in 1853.

To make a statement, the CPMF decided to open in 2006 on the anniversary of Lauer's death - Sept. 18th.

In the years that followed, notwithstanding the matter of the first line of duty death having been settled with Quinn as first and Lauer second, the CPMF continues to schedule the annual candle light vigil in Sept and usually on or near Sept. 18th.

It remains that way to this day.
