Chaplain's Retirement Party

From an attendee:
  • The White Eagle Banquet Hall last night was filled to capacity. It was about the best place since it could fit all those people, the free parking, feed them well and keep the price within reach of everyone.

There have been few parties like this and when told of some of them I regret that I missed any of them. The place was so crowded that there were people there you knew were around but were lost in the mass. There was our current Superintendent and two former Superintendents, Cline and Brzeczek there. A lot of current and former exempts and a lot of ordinary police of all ranks were there. There were federal agency chiefs there and I didn't know that Father Nangle was also their Chaplain. Let's see the Sun-Times call that double dipping.

Every one in that room has a Father Nangle story. Maybe a few of them could be posted of the blog. There were the after dinner presentations. Usually at retirement parties the speeches are canned and lame I you heard them all before. But turn the spotlight on Father Brandt, Rabbi Wolf, Neal Sullivan, Mike Shields and you have a very funny evening. Everyone saying that Father Brandt was the perfect replacement to fill Father Nangle's shoes.

Then came Phil Cline, a little thinner, a little less hair but spunky as ever. When the prognosis on Phil's cancer was not good and Father Nangle asked him about going to the party he said, "Do you mind if I hold off buying the tickets."

When Phil took the podium there was rock star applause and then pin-drop silence when he spoke. The praise heaped on Father Nangle by the Former Superintendent was that he was more than just a ceremonial leader. He was the one who came to the crime scenes, the emergency rooms and the roll call. He was the one in who was there in the middle of the night or places where cops were breaking down and he made them pull it together with the grace of God.

Then came Father Nangle himself, and this "sermon" was more of a thank-you to something he loved dearly, the CPD, the ordinary cops and to the heroes. He stated, better behinds never warmed the chairs in this place than they do tonight.

He told the story of a Marine friend of his, Lieutenant Joseph P. Donavan who was there and was a hero for flying wounded our of a raging firefight in Viet Nam. He had the Lieutenant stand for and ovation and OUH-RAHS fromhe fellow Marines in the congregation. Father Tom went on to speak of other heroes he had seen first hand such as the SWAT team at the Joe Airhardt shooting and thought of how these brave men are going in there to kill or be killed for a noble cause. The term "hero" should not be for someone like an NBA star or someone who just does the right thing. A "hero" is someone who takes a risk of his or her life or their future for a noble cause. This room he said was full of them.

The sermon was peppered with jokes and stories about how cops are special and there were the good natured barbs at his fellow Chaplains and at his boss Cardinal George who could trade cancer survivor stories with Phil.

Almost the last topic on the good Father's sermon was the Bill Cozzi tragedy. Father Tom was not judging him but was doing all he could to help Bill and his family keeping in touch with phone calls and emails. Now everyone who attended that dinner received a large heavy challenge coin as a souvenir. On on side is embossed: "FR. THOMAS NANGLE----CHICAGO POLICE CHAPLAIN" with the Arch-Angel Michael slaying the dragon.. On the other side was the image of hands caressing the Chicago Police Star and the words:
"Officer, remember---who you really work for".

The reminder were to be sold off for cash, and no one would have blinked an eye if the money were for some parting gift for Father Nangle. But Father said, the cash was for Bill when he returns to his family to help rebuild his life. A little while later it was announced that, "Folks, we are $20 short of $X thousand from these Cozzi coins so if any of you want to donate $1 apiece..." There was a stampede to the collection box and the amount got fuzzy again.

Superintendent McCarthy was a guest there. Jody Weis was not and that was a good thing as he would as one person put it, the turd in the punch bowl. Superintendent McCarthy heard what Father Tom said from the heart about Bill Cozzi, and how he felt about what happened to him, McCarthy surely knows that department morale needs some boost of some kind. It would be a small thing but great thing if McCarthy went to the President's former Chief of Staff and got a full pardon for Bill. Not a parole, or an early release, a pardon would remove any bar of associating with his police family.

We should have a good wishes Blog posting for Father Tom. Father Brandt is great a great guy to hand off this gig to but I just hope that Father Tom will make an appearance once in while. Stay Safe, God Bless and God Speed
Happy retirement.

The love in that room was tangible. The house was sold out and no one had to twist any arms to sell those tickets. It was an honor to be there, it really was.

Thank you for who you are and what you have done for all of us, Father Tom. (And, who knew the cardinal has such a great sense of humor?)

Don't know the man personally but I've heard nothing but good things about him. He truly has done the Lord's work helping any and all coppers for many, many years.
We are eternally grateful.

Fr. Nangle came to Ill. Masonic at 0400 and gave me Last Rites in the summer of 1995 when I was listed in critical condition after being T-Boned by a drunk.

He talked the talk and walked the walk. He loved us all.. And we all love him.

Is there any chance that the "Challenge Coin's: will be sold at the FOP store?

Some of us retirees who live in different states and could not make the party would love to buy one or two.

I laughed and cried that night from the stories and the tributes to Father Nangle. A selfless, selfless man. Only he would take the opportunity during his big moment, to ask others to think of Cozzi. Thanks for posting this SCC. He's as much a part of our brotherhood as anyone.

Years ago I was at the scene of a fire in the second district. I was in alley in the 4600 block of Indiana. It must of been around 2100 or so. Here comes a priest walking toward me. It was father Nangle. He said heard the call on his radio. He was nearby and thought he would check it out. Thanks Fr. Nangle for stopping by you made my day.

A Long and Happpy Retirement to You Father Tom.

Don't Disappear! Show up for some of the good things like the St. Jude Parade.

Mr. McCarthy, you heard the Good Father speak. It's Monday morning and you have a phone call to make or a visit to the Mayor on your Things to Do List.

What a shame McMe forgot who the evening was meant to honor; he NEVER stopped talking about himself and New York.

Sorry you had to deal with that, Tom.

Fr. Nagle absolutely despises not signing your name to these blogs and so I will not do it.
I have been to many parties in my long long career and have NEVER seen one like this one. Tom Nangle deserved this but, as usual, shared it with ALL.
There was even a picture of him as a fire buddy on a fire truck. I would say that there were mostly retired guys and gals that attended but I even saw some CFD guy there too that sat with their chaplain who is a guy like Nangle.
GOOD LUCK PADRE AND STOP AT ROLL CALLS WHEN YOU CAN.

PS; The guy to my right said he saw Brandt head for the door with a par slip after hearing the horror stories. NOT !

Great party, Great turnout, Great jokes, Great camaraderie, Great food, all for a GREAT MAN!

It was a great time, but I heard a lot of people didn't know about it. They couldn't have fit any more in the room, though, it was packed.

Some people don't touch any lives while passing through this world...the good Father touched more than he can ever imagine.

As one speaker said, Father Nangle wanted to quietly and humbly slip away. Dan Dugan had to persuade him to attend this party for 900 or so of his closest friends and family saying, "The party isn't for you Father, it for us."

God Bless and Keep you Father Tom.

And as Father Nangle wanted nothing for himself a pardon for Bill Cozzi would be an ideal retirement gift.

Mr. McCarthy, you don't have a hair on your Irish ass if you don't push hard for that. We know you read, or have this blog read for you.

Actually surprised "he of the tragically large & misshappen noggin" aka mr. publicity hound, didn't show up.

Havin' any luck unloading that money burning condo yet fella?

Was he the one revolving his dentures in self-congratulation about how CPD upper management was prepared to "take the hit" when that bit of nastiness was going around about fakey fr. flakey being made the head of the Chaplain's Ministry as a F/U from shortshanks?

Father Tom, gentleman that he is, won't reveal the name of the rank scoundrel and unwashed, stinking heathen who obviously took great pleasure in telling him something designed to intentionally wound the collective soul of Policemen in this city.

That would have been a sin and a shame.

It's also a testament of the good padre being a much kinder and gentler soul than a lot of us could ever be...

Bravo to you Padre! What a run!

What a wonderful person to write a book about his personal expierences tending to our police dept. in time of need and sorrow. It takes a very special person to devote his entire life to others. All the best to you Father!

Please don't even think that anyone wouldgo to bat for a copper and request a pardon. We are second class citizens and not many people give a rats ass about us. Bill cozzi is a class act and he will survive.

I was at the party and I am not one of his closest friends. I have been to several of his masses and loved them. More people should have known how they were...easy. After 911 I was really affected or scared if you want. His mass was close after the date and I took my whole tact team (not all Catholic) but no one said no. And yes while we were working. I needed something and found it when he spoke..."I know you are expecting me to stand up hear and tell you to turn the other cheek....(and I did expect that) and he went on to say "but I don't feel that way right now." no spiel on what God wanted us to do or think...he spoke from his heart as a man! I respected that....he let me know that it was normal to feel how I felt.. Anyway, what I was able to take away I cannot even explain. Sorry for rambling..he was there when I needed him. And probably didn't even know the impact he had. I was just in the group. But Thank You Father Nangle's for each and every life you have touched.

There was a thread here earlier this year, about Nangle's retirement, saying a party was being planned, but no details yet. I figured it would sell out, and I was right.

I hunted around til I found out the details and made sure I had tickets. Like a thousand other people, I WANTED to be there. This is one of the few sold out parties I've known in my career.

What a great vibe. Everybody was swapping Nangle-stories. If you said 'he spoke at my dad's funeral', half a dozen other people said, 'yeah, mine, too'. Stories of a young Tom Nangle flying in on jobs, just like the rest of us. (I had no idea who this guy was, the first time he came in on one of my jobs, but it was great to have him there.) Tom Nangle, stopping for a drink at Mike's, always listening, always understanding, always cracking a joke. Tom Nangle, organizing a fund, so police families didn't go without at Christmas. Tom Nangle, giving heartbreaking eulogies at too many honors funerals.

The receiving line was forty-five minutes long. Before dinner and AFTER dinner, when people usually make quick escapes. Nobody wanted to leave without thanking the man and telling him what he'd meant to them.

I had the good fortune of never knowing another Catholic chaplain for my entire career. And this one was without peer, for many, many reasons. He was the rightest possible guy, in the right place, at even the wrongest, most horrible of times. Thank you for everything, Father Nangle.

Fr. Tom is one of the brightest lights to ever shine on the CPD. His work was his passion. I regret that I got there in time to hear Fr. Tom's remarks. He will be greatly missed. Fr. Dan will do a good job for the Department.
Anyone have any idea where or how I can purchase one of the challenge coins?

A terrific send off for Fr. Tom. He knew that a lot of 3rd watch officer's couldn't attend; so thought I'd let you know that the Father reminded everyone to pray for those working the street. It always was and always has been about the "real police." Way to go!
