Retiree Takes Care of Business
A South Side man faces a burglary charge after he was shot by a retired Chicago police sergeant when the man broke into the former officer’s property, police said.
Carl Williams, 51, was charged with burglary after he was arrested in connection with the burglary in the 1300 block of East 67th Street late Friday morning, police said.Officers were called to the home about 11:30 a.m. after Williams broke into the building, police said. Williams used a three-pound sledge hammer to break a window, according to court documents.
The sergeant saw Williams with the hammer and shot him, police said.
Unfortunately, the offender will live to steal again - this is Cook County after all.

Nicely handled, fellow retired sergeant!
I'm newly retired. Always armed. Even when doing yardwork. Enough said.
Obviously not shot with a shotgun.
Way to go, Sarge. It's obvious to anyone that retired officers and those formerly of law enforcement should easily be afforded the right to be armed, whether in their homes or one the street. Althought the law treats former officers differently in regard to the use of force and indemnity issues, their armed presence and access to legal weapons augments those who are active members. It's a no brainer - except in Chicago Illinois where they still expect you to jump through hoops just to continue to "carry". Still, Federal law trumps the hassle of "Home Rule" legislation.
Another example os allowing conceal carry dont ya think?

Newly retired myself, I agree with you wholeheartedly. The city has degenerated into a community where it has become necessary to be armed while doing mundane chores, in and outside of the home. It's a damn shame but it is the reality of what Chicago and other municipalities have become. Some folks may think that is a joke, but reading some of the case reports and checking some of these new accounts will bear out the need to be vigilant ALL of the time if you value your safety and that of your family. Yes, crime is mobile and mopes do walk up on you believing you are vulnerable. It's a crime of opportunity and you are a potential victim while working in your yard, the garage or even taking out your garbage.

Lucky for you. I cannot even step out into my own garage with my legal registered firearm. We are sitting ducks because of the stupid Daley regulation.
The Sgt. could have shot this dick head right in the head and he would still be axen for another sandwich in the lockup. Just like Count Dracula...a stake through the heart!
Always remember the retired officer almost what 80 years old who punched a young thug robber right in the nose!
Nice work Sarge
old retired guy
Good Job Sarg!!!!
Image how surprised this young Thug was when the Old Timer pulled out his gun and said..."Feel lucky today Punk"!

For the most part, IL has pretty decent laws about use of deadly force to protect one's self, and they apply to all.
There is defense against both criminal and civil liability.
