- Chuck Canterbury, National President of the Fraternal Order of Police, joined Vice President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. on a conference call with other law enforcement leaders to brief them on elements of the Administration's jobs plan which will be laid out by President Barack H. Obama II in a speech to a joint session of Congress tonight.
Vice President Biden revealed that the Administration will call on Congress to make $4 billion available for the hiring program administered by the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS). He noted that there were approximately 30,000 unfilled law enforcement positions nationwide and more than 10,000 officers who have been laid off in just the past year.
30,000 openings? And from what we read, almost 2,000 of them are here in Chicago? What does that tell anyone about the state of our Department? What does that tell anyone planning mayhem next May about our readiness?

Hey SCC, this is OT but needs to be put out there.....
In 007 tonight a 10-1 is called as a unit chases a vehicle and shots are fired by the fleeing vehicle at the police several times. At some point the offenders begin bailing out...four in all. Luckily the idiot offenders helped the police out by running over one of their own as he tried to flee. Eventually all four offenders are caught (and rather quickly!), two pistols are recovered, and as the foot chase is taking place the dispatcher relays info that there was a drive-by shooting just a few blocks away by a vehicle matching the description and three people at that scene are shot. I am in a citywide unit and heard the 10-1 come over citywide. I flipped to the zone as we headed that way and have to say it was awesome hearing the units come up one after the other saying...got one in custody. Great job to all the P.O's out there in 007! And Frank Main will never believe the trigger happy cops never fired a round.
Actually made me enjoy my job again for 20 minutes or so.

Perfect timing on the FOP's part with 9/11 coming up. Much attention is being brought on law enforcement's efforts to keep our country safe.
In America we have a unique idea about law enforcement. Our police are civilians and are responsible to the political authority closest to the people – on the local level. This insures that our police will always be responsive to local needs and be loyal to the people they serve.
Now consider if you were a powerful central government – you’d want to control the police in order to enforce your power wouldn’t you ? Consider a country like England for example where they use this model and the local police are under the direct control of their central government. English police are a national police force, not at all like we have here where we have various police forces all responsible to smaller local authorities.
One method our Federal government has often used to wrestle control over something from the States is funding. They’ll get the States hooked on federal funding for a particular thing that the Congress normally has no authority over and then just like a good dope peddler once they’ve converted the sucker into a stone cold junkie they’ll raise the price. In this case they usually add conditions to the funding. Remember how we got sucked into the 55 mile an hour speed limit once upon a time ? Congress simply told the States no funding unless you adopt our speed limit.
If our central government were interested in establishing a police state – they would need to control the police. Maybe this is the first step towards that goal. Get the States hooked on funding then threaten to withdraw it unless they surrender control.
Considering all that has transpired the last few years, I wouldn’t reject this idea too quickly. Who would have thought only a few short years ago that we’d be forced to line our children up to have their sexual organs touched by federal agents in order to fly on a commercial jet ? Who would have thought that the National Security Agency would plug into the backbone of the Internet and be able to read our emails without our knowledge ? All this has happen and much more.
We need to be careful and look that gift horse in his mouth.

10 years ago,they refused to cancel the same parade.
At that time, we experienced the wost tragedy most of us will ever knew in out lifetimes and the "Mexican Community Leaders" refused to cancel with some lame excuse.

Traditionally in Chicago every ethnic parade is held on a weekend a week or so before the actual date they represent. Mexican Independence day has and always been on Sept 16 and in Chicago as far as I can remember they always had a parade. No one should ever forget the events of Sept 11 and I have to agree that having the parade on Sunday is in bad taste, Surely this wasn't thought out by the 26th street chamber of commerce. As a Mexican-American U.S Army veteran It makes me sick to know they chose Sept 11 to have the parade. In my 40 plus years I have never attended the parade on 26th street and I will continue not to go.
God bless America, God bless the Veterans of this great nation and never forget what happened on Sept 11

The ugly reality is that we lost 200,000 people, not counting illegal dry wall hangers in the last census. The 2,000 lost officers WILL NOT BE REPLACED. As for next Spring, it is unrealistic to think that Rahm is going to hire someone for 20 to 30 yrs. just to handle a couple of events. All of the officials at both events will have their own security provided by their countries or the Secret Service. Any other issues will be addressed by the Mutual Aid agreements, and federal assistance. We are only getting $2 Million for this event. Face up to the facts; the days of Chicago having a police department of over 10,000 officers are history.

That party was like one of the old-time parties, the kind we don't see anymore. No one was there because they 'had' to buy the ticket. No one was there because their 'spot' depended on it. The event was sold out, because there are SO many people Tom Nangle touched in the course of his 41 years with us.
The affection in that room was amazing. The humor was kind, not abusive. The bagpipers played at the beginning AND at the end. It was a pleasure to be there and you could see how touched Tom Nangle was. As he said, he just wanted to 'disappear', but no one would allow that, and he was grateful they insisted and had the party.

Heard this fiasco over the air last night. Thought the exact same thing to myself. This guy is crazy, on a power trip and going to get somebody hurt because of his enormous ego.
The problem with hiring with stimulus money is that it is a one time deal. Thats what happened the first time, departments were given the money, but only for one or two years salaries and then the department would have to pick up the salaries. That's why many departments didnt take the money

Yup; on Humboldt Boulevard, in the park. Because they don't have ENOUGH landscaped gardens there already.
I don't trust this fed money at all. I worked at CHAPD and the last academy classes they hired were with federal money and they got a 3 year contract and they were all laid off after 1 year. CHA got permission to do so from the fed. It was part of that 100,000 cops Clinton took credit for.
It would be nice if Chicago got a few dollars to hire some more police though.
Funny how these arrogant corrupt politicians find money somewhere when they want to feed some project to make them look good. Hiring more cops, give underpaid teachers a measly 2% pay raise and another $150,000 for their school if they sellout their fellow teachers and union, and fund any other project that has their name all over it.

Should the Fed give us money it would be great and yes boys and girls crime is down but we really do need more officers.
It would be nice if we could do more agressive preventive patrol rather than run from call to call.
Crime is down in part because we have fewer eyes and ears on the street. 1300 handwavers a day adds up t a lot of missed reports. Now people just doe report some crimes because they have to wait hours for a car. It is not the fault of patrol that calls get in a backlog we can only do some much.
If we reduce the department by anither 2000 officers we can drive the numbers off the chart.

For the life of me I cannot understand how politicians think. Their rationale is all wrong. They do everything they can to piss off the workers while pandering to the groups that don't contribute to society. Imagine if a mayor came into office and immediately funded multiple academy classes until the manpower shortage was a thing of the past, then worked on adding money to the pension fund until it was fully funded, then found money for much needed training and equipment. All this followed by bouncing incompetent bosses and replacing them with street smart people who know the job. Imagine the boost to morale and the pride that would be instilled in the blue shirts. It's not that hard to turn things around. Why do the politicians always do the opposite of what they should?
Why send penny to 016? So she can fuck with the police up here? Maybe she can spit oceans and look like.... I mean, move mountains, but send her to a district that needs it. Traditionally in Chicago every ethnic parade is held on a weekend a week or so before the actual date they represent. Mexican Independence day has and always been on Sept 16 and in Chicago as far as I can remember they always had a parade. No one should ever forget the events of Sept 11 and I have to agree that having the parade on Sunday is in bad taste, Surely this wasn't thought out by the 26th street chamber of commerce. As a Mexican-American U.S Army veteran It makes me sick to know they chose Sept 11 to have the parade. In my 40 plus years I have never attended the parade on 26th street and I will continue not to go.
