FOP Jumps In

  • The Chicago Fraternal Order of Police is concerned about police station lobbies becoming homeless shelters in bad weather.

As WBBM Newsradio[...] reports, a Police Department directive read at roll calls reminded officers that the homeless can use police station lobbies for shelter.

Officers are not too pleased about the arrangement.

They have complained they are first responders, and with the homeless camping out in their places of work, they and others who come to the police stations could be exposed to disease and what one calls “ride-along critters” such as lice and bedbugs.

Also, says Chicago FOP spokesman Pat Camden, the homeless people who come to the police stations could be violent.

Could be? How about "have been." RIP Rick Francis.

As Pat so aptly states, these are government buildings and places of business. Just because we are open 24/7 doesn't mean we're a dumping ground for the unwashed, un-medicated and infested.

why not put them at at a safe, vacant factory? might as well, since these bonehead assholes have run businesses out of our state

some of these people have mental illness, violent, criminal records etc This is not the place to be unless of course something happens and the city wants a huge lawsuit. That would suck, wouldn't it?

It's also a huge safety and security problem. No one is searched, they have mental issues. Look at what happened in Navada. No one saw that coming and the dude kills bunch of people.

Let them sleep in city hall, the aldermans office or the mayors house but not by me.

HEY SCC, Does this mean us suburban PD can drop off our homeless there so we don't have to deal with them. I'm not big on politicians but I could never imagine our Mayor or Chief allowing bums to hang out in the lobby. Not a very good impression for the tax payers to see when they come to the police for help.

You cops are soooo mean! What is the matter with taking a few dozen bedbugs home to meet your family. Have some indigent whino coughing in your face or slobering in your coffee at the desk. I think the lobby and 5th floor of City Hall would be a better dumping ground for the hapless and homeless.

Yesterday afternoon, a homeless mental in 003 was in the public bathroom ass naked washing himself and his clothes in the sink. He was told to leave. Put his clothes back on dripping wet. I'm sure he was going to use the hand dryer to dry his clothes, which would have taken until this time today to complete. Sad part about all of this, the public washroom in 003 is in a secluded place where no one on the desk can see them, but officers working in the CAPS office which is directly across from the bathroom are at great risk if one of these shitheads looses it.

I think the vast majority of our citizens ALREADY realize that trying to report a crime in Chicago is a major clusterf*ck and a whopping waste of their time that could better be used to do some of the following:

RAHM EMANUEL'S TOP 5 LIST OF BETTER THINGS RESIDENTS COULD BE DOING THAN REPORTING CRIMES TO CHICAGO POLICE:

5) Work with local youth groups to develop a better understanding of why roving bands of criminals whose race is not reported need everything you have...

4) Read and BELIEVE the lies that are being told by news reporters who are kissing the mayors' ass thinking that being a friend of the administration will somehow give them credibility as a legitimate reporter...

3) Take a qualifying course for firearm owners and purchase a good weapon (OR SIX!), for protection of your family and property that can no longer be protected by police due to being shorthanded and beefing up of politicians personal security details...

2) Have security systems installed in your homes and autos that include a panic switch to avoid the occasional carjacking...

And the #1 better thing you can do instead of report a crime in Chicago:

1) Have your bullet wounds looked at by a certified ER staff, (good luck, the homeless and unwashed are there also, being treated for everything from alcoholism to scabies thanks to Obamacare!)...

This is all just a little funny ha-ha by 9.5 that was probably whispered in his ear by the stuttering prick.

It's kind of ironic that this idiotic directive comes about just when the anti-Police propaganda machine has people riled up about our "too generous" medical that "allows Police Officers to be off for 365 days every two years."

Misleading, slanderous bitches are pushing the inference that somehow, every member of CPD is taking this time off to rile up the public and further separate CPD from the good will, care and concern of the same.

Good on FOP in finally addressing this... A good watch dog doesn't bark at EVERYTHING that goes bump. 9.5 has a lot of his people posting bullshit rumors and distractors on EVERY local blog, including this one.

Realize that City Hall is going to push for an even more anti-Police slant (if such were ever possible) in the media as Rahm prepares his attempt to run the table on collective bargaining, contractual protection, and wages/benefits in his desire to walk us backwards into the beginning of the 20th Century...

Here's how to file an OSHA complaint:

http://www.osha.gov/as/opa/worker/complain.html

Chicago North Area Office contact info:
701 Lee Street - Suite 950
Des Plaines, Illinois 60016
(847) 803-4800
(847) 390-8220 FAX

Reference these alleged violation standards:
29 CFR 1910.22(a)- housekeeping requirements
29 CFR 1910.37(a)(3)- exit routes blocked
29 CFR 1910.132(d)- PPE hazard assessment
29 CFR 1910.141(a)(3)(i)- more housekeeping requirements
29 CFR 1910.1030- Bloodborne pathogens

OSHA has 7 days to conduct an inspection once a complaint is filed. You should probably file a complaint when it's forecast to be cold so if a CSHO conducts an inspection he/she will be able to find the alleged violations. Be sure to file a complaint for each station.

Lets post Rahmbo's home address in each station and tell them they are welcome in the Mayor's home. Diseases, parasites, mental illness and all. See how he likes being exposed to all that. I like the idea of filling out exposure forms every day you work the desk or have to pass them in the lobby. Lots or airborne illness. And with the bedbug epidemic spreading, will the department compensate us for having to throw away all our possessions and bug bomb our houses if we get exposed? I will certain file a lawsuit for compensation if that happens to me and my family. Putting me and my family's health in jeopardy because the city and state can't manage it's finances is negligent. The FOP needs to file a lawsuit, cause can certainly be shown for a harmful work environment without due protection.

The Truth About the Medical Roll 09/07/11

Today, the Chicago Sun-Times reports that CPD Officers took an average of 11.6 sick days off in 2009. The United States Department of Health & Human Services reports that U.S. workers take an average of 14 sick days off per year. Truth be told, we are below the national average.

But the good news does not end there. The CPD counts our regular days off as medical roll time when we are on sick leave. Weekends and scheduled days off are not counted in the 14 days that the average American worker takes. When we remove those regularly scheduled days off from our medical roll use, the average Chicago Police Officer used only about 8.2 sick days per year. This figure is a substantial improvement over the national average.

Based on the stats, we really do have good reason to be proud of our work attendance. However, the Mayor clearly believes otherwise. His administration wants to portray the police as greedy and lazy, sitting at home faking illness and collecting a check. It’s not true. But once again, rather than negotiating at the bargaining table, the City is attempting to negotiate our contract in the press.

All the comments I've seen here apply to the library environment in spades. Not only do the libraries have to put up with what we used to call "bums" when the weather is extreme, most branches have at least one bum who hangs around on a daily basis. The libraries have the advantage that they have regular hours rather than having to be open 24/7. On the other hand, librarians don't carry sidearms. ;-)
