Rahm makes a big announcement, then ruins it by pretending he's a "commoner" instead of a rich connected politician:
Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Wednesday offered four to six weeks of paid maternity leave to pregnant city employees — even as he reined in a policy that has allowed workers to stockpile vacation days and cash them out upon retirement.
Ten years ago, the Chicago Sun-Times disclosed that City Hall had no maternity policy for its female employees. That has forced pregnant women to cobble together unused sick days, vacation days and unpaid family leave and rush back to work before they’re ready.
On Wednesday, Emanuel changed all that.
Nice of him to change it after J-Fled and his ilk all got to cash out millions in vacation time - vacation time everyone else had to "use or lose." All Hail Rahm! All Hail Rahm! Then we read this:
- “It’s gonna help us recruit and maintain a workforce. ... It’s not only a good business practice, but it’s in line with who we are. ... I can say this as somebody who took a week off when each child was born of my three. It’s the right thing to do for your employees. … It’s good values. And it’s a great way to start a child off in the bonding between an adult and a child.”
Well gee, if we had made $16 million or so under the table in a fixed deal with a major banking concern, we could afford to take a week off to be with our newborn kids, too. But seeing as how those jobs only go to certain connected people, well, hopefully the watch commander doesn't restrict time due after the delivery.

Ha I just had a baby 11 weeks ago. I was rushed back to work by the medical section at 6 weeks.(I work the streets not a desk job) My husband had to burn 35 hours they won't even give him sickness in family leave.
Notice how busy the City Council was rubber stamping this proposal and echoing the call for a longer school day and a casino? I really think that 25 alderman could "rubber stamp" and "echo" just as well as 50 and for a lot less of my taxpayer money. Use the saving to keep the ordinary people employed!
Mayor Bloomberg from New York works for a dollar a year. Rham is also wealthy and should do the same. Lead by example Mr. Mayor...

The social left wants to stop usage of the words "mother", "father", and "parent"because they are loaded and represent traditional values, roles, and mores.

Rahm is a complete two faced hypocrite. He made more than 10 million dollars in 3 years in an industry that he had never been trained or educated for. Gee, he must really be a quick study. If the feds looked closely at what he did to acquire his fortune he would be in an orange jump suit.

I have 20 years and never have been on the medical longer than 4 days. I can count 5 visits in those years. Why doesn't the city go after the abusers and leave the system alone.

Rahm made some of those millions when he was on the board of Fannie Mae in Washington under Bill Clinton's regime. He was part of the corruption that brought us to this Depression we are suffering under right now. Another crook who is connected and will not suffer like the rest of us.

AND PAY TEACHERS MORE BECAUSE THEY DESERVE MORE. Rahm snatched away their very deserved 4% pay raise and now wants to bribe the teachers with just 2%. Say What? What a complete little Whore!
Rahm Majored in Liberal Arts & Speech. AS they would say on the Simpsons - "that is a phony degree." Yet somehow this guy was offered a job (suspiciously just after his years of working for Clinton) to broker a deal for (quasi-governmental) ComEd. That's right. They were lucky to have found such a qualified economist like Rahm. Rahm was paid $18M for about 1.5 years of work. Nice. Rahm took full advantage and took the gilded path of the American politician. Now he roots out the everyman as the evil one. Asshole.
Rahm's attitude is very much influenced by his wealth and power. As one who sees his office as a "public service" he really doesn't care about income. Problem is, that is a very easy posture to take when you have made tens of millions in the private sector. Most cops and city employees don't come from wealth or have prior careers which have earned them millions. Yes Rahm, most of us come from middle or working class backgrounds, in some cases we come from real poverty. This means that our employment with the city is not an experiment in public policy "change" but a career, a career that feeds our families and upon which we depend for health care and a stable retirement.
My sense is that Rahm's recent bullying of the CTU and his upcoming bullying of the FOP is informed by his rich boy attitude. He really can't imagine a household in which private school tuition costs, dental costs, a car payment and a mortgage payment could easily absorb 75% of a worker's income in a bad month. Throw a house repair in the mix and some school uniforms and the ratios are even bleaker.
When Rahm promoted his suggested changes to the school day as an effort to have the teachers "do right" by the people of Chicago, I had to laugh. When has the city ever cared about doing right by its workers in a contract modification. Like the Kennedys and Obama, Rahm is a very dangerous kind of liberal. Because of his background as a very privileged and incredibly wealthy person, he incorrectly thinks all of his policy dreams can easily be funded by hits to the middle class. He is probably cognitively unable to compute the difference an hour extra hour of work a day or a missing hundred dollars a week make to a middle class cop. problem is that if he dreams too big there won't be any middle class left in Chicago. They will all have been made poor through liberal patterns of taxation.

CTU president Karen Lewis found out first hand what a low life Emmanuel can be. She stated that in a private meeting with him the discussion got heated and he called her many vulgar names. No surprise here. This Mutt has no regard for anyone and will belittle you in a Nw York second. What the teachers should have done is when Rahm snatched away their 4% pay raise per their contract they should have WALKED! 90 more minutes a day...PAY ME! If you don't have a plan for those extra 90 minutes lets hold off until we do. Emmanuel has no repect for anyone under him. I have more than 20 years and have been on the medical 3 times for cancer surgery. I work out of a toxic station in one of the worst areas for pollution. The city said I am one of the FEW who are using the MOST of the medical resources! They want to change my lifestyle????? Just hope to God you don't get cancer...Thats when you'll need the medical!!!

you shouldn't expect anything above and beyond what's mandated by law when it comes to time off for a pregnancy. You knew what the rules were when you decided to start a family, now suck it up and abide by those rules just like the rest of us did.
I switched watches WHEN BIDS OPENED UP to accommodate my family. I didn't cry to be put on management on days because it worked out with my husband's job. This is just another example why this job is going to Hell in a hand basket. Also, it's another reason why women aren't taken seriously on this job.

Reading is a skill, 9/11/2011 @ 217am. And NO, there shouldnt be preferential treatment for ANYONE in any profession (ADA the only exception). You will find little to no sympathy in the REAL WORLD sweetheart. Consider yourself lucky to maybe have bosses that kiss your ass for whatever reasons and let you and hubby take more time off cuz you folks are the first coppers to ever have a child. REMEMBER THIS: nothing lasts forever - especially on CPD. Enjoy what little perks your overinflated sense of entitlement conjured up cuz it'll end soon enough. Hairgel + College + Generation Y = Death of the CPD.
I think these posts about pregnant women milking the system are disgusting. It is easy for persons to take a look at the situation and to make unfair presumptions about circumstances regarding women being "taken care of". This being said, when I was pregnant I never asked to be taken care of by anyone....I of course appreciated any way I could have stayed in my unit of assignment but had no expectations. When it was obvious that it wasn't working sitting at the desk (mainly because of people like you posters) I asked to be sent to call back. I did in fact go to 35th street. After i delivered my child, i took my 6 weeks and a leave of absence (unpaid) for an additional 8 weeks to be with my child. When I did in fact return to work, they sent me back to 35th street and wouldn't allow me to go back to the district. I worked in that miserable place until I finally personally met with the deputy requesting to return to the district. Pregnancy is an obviously temporary situation so bosses do try to keep there people because once they are gone it is uncertain as to when or if they will be able to return. Don't get me wrong I am sure there are women who exploit there pregnancy to their benefit. However, don't paint all women on this job with a broad brush based on the actions of a few. Those making these statements are obviously unhappy that they could never "get taken care of". Perhaps it is because of your miserable personality and the fact that you have never been able to maintain a partner or do an ounce of work. In closing, don't tell me that bosses don't take care of their people who have injuries that cause them to go temporarily light duty. It happens all the time. Maybe these people posting how they weren't "taken care of" should spend a little less time worrying about what everyone else is doing and more time worrying about themselves. A little more working and a little less bitching is a good start. Google yourself narcissism, it might be enlightening.
