Hiring Sheriffs

  • For the first time in three years, a new class of Cook County sheriff's police recruits will start training for open slots in a move that top officials hope will fill the department's depleted ranks.

The new class of 25 officers, which includes existing courtroom deputies and jail guards, is part of a plan by Sheriff Tom Dart to fill a hole of about 50 police officers. They begin their training today on the campus of Triton College in River Grove, sheriff's officials announced.

Dart's plan to allow his deputies and jail guards the chance to shift jobs arose from his inability to secure funding to hire.

So Dart is pulling a Rahm here - he's calling them "recruits" when in fact, they are existing courtroom deputies and jail guards being retreaded as street officers.

In other news, Rahm is counting these as "50 more officers on the street," bringing him within striking distance of his campaign promise of 1,000.

This is just a routine class for sheriffs police. The officers have always been pulled from the jail and courts.

All sheriffs police were either a deputy or correctional officer prior to being sheriffs police. You need a big phone call to get the spot. Its actually a sweet gig take home car, good pay, and the best is you don't even have to live in illinois to have the job. They have no residency requirement.

I used to work for Cook County as a Sheriff, you have to work either as Deputy or a Correctional officer first before you can work as a Sherrif's Police Officer. I'm not saying but im just saying maybe it's not all about smoke and mirrors with the county. Man I wish I would of stayed with them and applied for CCSPD. I could be living in St. John, Indiana right now! Instead I'm stuck with CPD for another 8 years till I make my 20.

No smoke and mirrors here, this is the way it is done in Cook County. One has to work the courts or jail before becoming a police officer. Although one does need a phone call (or at least used to), to some extent I like this system. It is like having to prove yourself to some extent before you become the police or working the menial job before getting the good job. Too bad we don't have a system like that here in shitcago. Instead, the clouted get hired on CPD and end up in a cushy job as soon as they get out of the academy, never having had to prove themselves.

SCC, all Cook County Sheriff's Police Officers come from the Jail or Courtrooms. The Cook County Sheriff's Police test is only offered to current Cook County Sheriff Court Deputies and Correctional Officers.

The Sheriff's Police is not open to the public to apply. You must be a court service deputy or correctional officer first. You DO need clout to get the position. Every county commishioner, strogers, daley, sheehan, dart, get their people in to the Sheriff's Police Department. No clout = no job.

a lot of sheriff's departments only hire police officers from the ranks of their existing corrections.

it is tough to get COs so they get people who want to be cops to become Cos this way.

I also read one time that it may have something to do with wanting the POs to have corrections experience in case they need to use them in that role.

You want to save some money in Cook County Gummint? Trim down the number of Sheriff's Flunkies (oh, no Deputies) assigned as bailiffs in our county's courts. They're everywhere, and unneeded.

Federal judges, whose egos are at least 50% larger, and who try actual terrorists and Blagovichists, do not have dedicated bailiffs. If they need security, they hit the panic button and they're covered in seconds.

Traffic court judges really don't needed dedicated judges. The Daley Center alone must have a corps of a couple hundred Sheriff's Flunkies. I bet it could be safely trimmed by 75%.

Ill remember that when ur getting ur face smashed in by some shithead on a traffic stop. Maybe if ur lucky ill just stop and call the "real police" to come help you out. Or would you like this "zero respect" deputy to get out and help you fight the bad guy so you can go home to your wife and kids? Be careful what you attitude is towards other LE agencies. Like it or not we are still the good guys. I have helped out countless numbers of CPD officers in my short 8 years on the job, and despite asshats like you i will continue to do so, cause its the right thing to do.

scc, the only way to become sheriffs police is to either first be a court deputy or in the jail. You cant just walk in off the street and take a sheriffs police test. So, really there is no smoke and mirrors its just how the process goes. And they are not retreading the academy as you claim. They went through an academy to become jail guards or court officers. Now they will actually go through a police academy which is different. Before, they didnt learn any police procedures etc... so its not what you make it out to be.

When you consider the fact that Most County Officers have to do CO time before they are allowed to become "Sheriffs Police" this is a start.

They can't just go from the Jail or Courtrooms to work the Street and we all know this.

It would be like giving a CPD badge to anyone that already knew how to write Parkers in Chicago.

And @ 9/27/2011 03:04:00 AM

Why don/t you go into the office at the Daley Center and talk your former F.O.P president Bill Nolan and give him that info. He is the A/C there. Make sure to go in with your baseball jersey and make CPD proud.

You know, there's a reason we use capitals at the beginning of sentences and periods and exclamation points at the end of them. It's called 'readability' and 'comprehension'.

Your post is a pain in the ass to read and, despite its point, it isn't worth someone's time to read and re-read and re-read it again, to try to understand it.

If your huge ego/being special is more important than conveying your meaning, then by all means continue with your incomprehensible posts. They're easy to skip over.
