Where Did We Go?

You can find almost anything you want on the internet via search engines. We don't understand all the dynamics behind it, but the big companies have specially designed "web crawlers" that scan billions of pages and categorize them according to popularity, providing users with wanted information.

Google is the biggest of these search engines, generating some $10 billion in revenue annually. The company and its founders are very liberal in their politics and donations. They've also run into criticisms, mostly from conservative sites, that they manipulate and hide data and have a decidedly anti-American bent to their main search page. Witness earlier this month on Labor Day where they placed a tiny American flag at the bottom of their site. All well and good except that they have huge interactive banners for all sorts of nonsense anniversaries (you can see them at this link here). They also caved into Chinese demands concerning their programming (The Great Firewall of China) and may have assisted in identifying "subversives" that Chinese authorities subsequently jailed.

Why do we bring this up?

Well, for some reason, if you type "Second City Cop" or "Second City Cop Blog" in a Google search box, guess what you don't get? If you said, "A link to this site," you'd be completely correct. In fact, we googled both phrases and couldn't find a direct link to this site in the first 50 results at all. Yes, there were mentions of the blog, but they were secondary links from other sites, like The Chicagoist, HillBuzz, Crimefile, Shaved, assorted news sites and pretty much anyone who has linked back to us over the past 6 years. Just last week, those first few pages were filled with direct links to SecondCityCop.

So what gives? This appears to be a concerted effort by someone to minimize the significance of the blog. We have no idea why a $10 billion-a-year company that purports to deliver information to the masses would take it upon themselves to blacklist a site that pulls in maybe 15,000 hits a day on a good day, but we can only assume that they have. Are we pissing off Rahm that much? Is Garry calling in favors? Has the wrath of J-Fled finally reached a peak that he can control the internet?

Backtracking a bit, it may have started around the time we supported Georgia's execution of a convicted cop killer - is this an example of Google's chilling effect on those of a more conservative bent? We support Second Amendment Rights and are avid fans of the NRA and like minded organizations. Could this have something to do with our political views?

We have no answers at this point, and no easy way to gather any. Maybe some of our readers want to poke around. We aren't going to hold our breath that the media might make something of this - they'd never lift a finger to help a blogger, let alone a conservative one. And Google is a private company that has caved in to Communist China. We don't particularly care as this doesn't affect us financially and our readers are smart enough to find us using competing search engines like Yahoo or Bing or something else. We still appear there in the top spots.

I don't get it. On, google, when I type in secondci - I don't even have to finish it - your site comes up at the top of the list.

And, when I type in second city cop bl - again, I don't have to finish it - second city cop blog comes up at the top of my list.

OK, call me a cynic, so I tried it myself. Using YAHOO, you were the second hit. Using EXCITE you were the fourth hit. Using GOOGLE, I went through eight pages and didn't see you at all!

So now I'm not a cynic, and also, I'm going back to YAHOO. I don't need their BS site.

I stopped using google a long time ago because of their liberal leanings. Even though Yahoo leads with liberal leaning stories on its front page, it still returns all searches relevant to your search request.

Google got in trouble for it's searches a while back when people were search for things related to religion. People would type 'Christianity is,' 'Judaism is,' and automated fill in responses were 'evil, fake, and the like.' However, when someone typed in 'Islam is,' there were no automated fill in responses.

I know it is small, but all those small things do add up. I believe that Google is trying to change the mindset of individuals and also change or tweak truths. As are a lot of other liberal companies out there.

Stick to Yahoo for now. It is still a decent search engine.

That's some weird shit.

On Yahoo and Bing it's the first hit if you type in "second city cop" with or without quotes.

I didn't utilize "safe search" during my Google search just in case it got filtered out because of naughty language. I mean the site is filled with four letter words such as "Weis", "Phil", etc.

Oh well. Hopefully, this will be brought to the attention of google and "fixed".

I'm not holding my breath.

SCC,

It could be truly a conspiracy, perhaps paid for by the $75K in vacation time that J-Fled cashed in to truly make you "insignificant" for a few weeks or...

Unfortunately, these search results may have a lot more to do with Google's latest round of adjustments to their top-secret algorithm and the fact that you never managed to secure the domain name (secondcitycop.com) for your blog.

I always get to your site via a Google search. Just last week I did a search for your site and before I could type in all of "Second City Cop" your site would automatically pop up. Like you said, tonight I could not find a direct link to your site anywhere on Google. I had to type in the whole link in the browser (www.secondcitycop.blogspot.com) and go here directly.

I noticed the change in "search preference" or order as it know in the world of website search consulting when your "organic search results" show a site lower in the results. Yes, Google has been under fire for manually recoding a page's natural rank. They often do it to competitors.

A page’s organic search result is normally determined by links to the page, number of searches, number of searches coupled with the occurrence of keywords, and other information. The whole search engine businesses is flooded with trade secrets and know body shares their exact methods. I have to search for second city cop using yahoo or bing (who use combined crawler data since late 2010).

The change where SCC dropped off the top of the search results took place a few days ago.

Why? That's easy. Daley + Rham + Quinn + Obama= Dirty Democratic, Liberal, Socialists which have the Power to do such things! Police see things for what they are. The Liberal Media, especially our Hometown Newspapers cater to these fucking crooked politicians by telling lies, and hiding crime (just to name a few) but this is the stuff that win elections, and crooked media is just another means by which our crooked Democratic Govt shares with the Public only those lies they wish the Sheople (Sheep) should hear & see. Google may not have until they were asked by some very powerful people to do so.

Rahm BELIEVES he is destined to become President in 2016. He is a micro-manager and has the ear of the current POTUS. Why wouldn't he try to silence people who will try to keep him out of the White House in the future, as we surely would on this blog? And why wouldn't Obama and other Dems help him, just with the POSSIBILITY that the Presidency could remain in Dems hands for another term?

Absolutely, I find this to be very plausible considering the personalities involved.

Did you find it surprising that members of his staff have said that their hero is Chairman Mao? What do you think this means for America? Personal freedoms will be attacked.

Free speech is a Constitutional right. But the liberals like "political correctness" when they hear you speak. They want to limit your freedom. Just like the communist Chinese limit the freedom of their citizen slaves.

Prohibition didnt work either. The simple message here is "make something illegal or not accessable and it will explode with demand", Prohibition acctually caused more drunkeness than it prevented. It made regular men criminals and shined the light on the crooked politicians. Before prohibition, women hardly ever took a drink and bars were largely for men. Prohibition turned on thousands and thousands of respectable women into bar hopping "criminals". SO NEEDLESS TO SAY , SCC is poised to become even more popular than ever. "they manipulate and hide data and have a decidedly anti-American bent to their main search page. Witness earlier this month on Labor Day where they placed a tiny American flag at the bottom of their site."

No, that was not anti-American. If you'd read anything about it, you would know that the huge "doodle" on September 5th was to honor Freddie Mercury's birthday. That's what ran in most of the world -- because MOST OF THE WORLD celebrates Labor Day on May 1st.

In the U.S., which celebrated Labor Day on September 5th, Google didn't want to offend us by running the Freddie Mercury doodle and ignoring our holiday. So it ran an American flag out of respect for us, and ran the Freddie Mercury doodle the next day, September 6th.

I think you're a little paranoid here, SCC. I think Google has better things to do thank tweak its code to ignore you. Try putting your blog name in your metadata a few more times, or registering with Google through Blogger, and you'll see your name rise through the filters.

I don't believe it's Google at the wheel. Though I'm sure the guilty party would love for you to assume so.

I have IT friends who have manipulated Google searches for years so I know for a fact it is fairly easy to intentionally manipulate someone out of a Google search just like SOMEONE has done to Second City Cop blog. My friends are also in a rock band so their reason is based on marketing principles, not corrupt city politics.

The same can be done for you SCC in reverse so it's a matter of you finding the right IT guy or gal who can get you back in there.

My guess is that this "Google Pseudo Blacklisting" is being led by our mayor Rahn Emmanuel who can't possibly like the taste of real news being served up by SCC.

Rahm and his "people" may be thinking ahead, thinking perhaps Daley would still have continued as mayor if not for SCC's constant pressure opposing city hall corruption.

Keep calling "Bullshit" on Rahm and others, SCC. We will all find a way to listen.

I binged my way to you this a.m.

Expect to have your blog taken down in short order. This is the opening salvo in Emanuel's attempt to shut you down. Now that he's told you google sucks on his pathetic ass, you can bet total shutdown is next if you can't make this issue public enough. I suggest contacting other major sites for coverage such as engadget and gizmodo among others such as huffington.

If you don't make this more public you'll be shut down at your current site in no time.

As I think of this situation, it reminds me of an Arizona Liberatarian woman who had a blog, "Just a Girl In Short Shorts Talking About Whatever".

The woman would put up brilliant conservative, right-minded posts.

In '08 when the Gov't started talking about bailing-out Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac because the politicians said people expected FM & FM investments to be backed by the U.S. Government she found and posted the web link and PDF of the terms and conditions of Fannie Mae Bonds that, at that time, was on the Fannie Mae web site.

On the first page of the PDF link on the FM web site, in bold black letters it said "THIS INVESTMENT IS NOT BACKED BY THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT"

I remember her posting in her blog how Google was censoring her.

I don't thing Google is really liberal. I think they are in to big gov't, power and money.

We need to make a stink about this with Drudge, FOX, Beck and anyone else who will listen.

It's weird. I noticed this years ago, before I'd gotten around to properly bookmarking SCC, and from friends I told to check out SCC - "I can't find it".

There's probably a good explanation - after all, Google has a huge stake in being seen as objective.

It may be that because so many cites link to SCC so vigorously that those look like the more prominent sites to Google? I dunno. Or have you, SCC, ever, ever tried to up your Google ratings with hidden words, or anything like that? Google comes down very hard on sites that do that.

Sure would be nice if Google itself would chime in here.

SCC, it's your fault. Change the configuration of robots.txt. Not sure how to do this in blogger, but I think there's a "Allow this blog to be indexed by search engines" setting somewhere.

See for yourself, http://secondcitycop.blogspot.com/robots.txt

I suspect the User-agent: * line supercedes the googlebot line allowing access further on.

I doubt it's a conspiracy.Remember that Blogspot, which hosts this site, is owned by Google. Also, this site is no longer listed in Bing either.

If you look at the site's robots.txt file (which instructs Google whether or not to include the site in its index), you'll see the text:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /search
Disallow: /

User-Agent: googlebot
Disallow: /search
Allow: /

You can see it here: http://secondcitycop.blogspot.com/robots.txt

This instructs Google and all other search engines not to index the site. There's a chance that you may have selected something in the Blogger profile to not allow search engines to access your site.

I'm not quite sure how you fix this in Blogger, but I'm sure a few Google searches will fix it. It seems to me that someone messed up the settings, but there's always the chance that someone hacked the login and made the change.

Nothing new here. Google censors things they don't like. Google has Google Trends. You can check it out. Those are the most popular searches.

I listen to Alex Jones. He has a talk show that deals with some wacky stuff. Ron Paul kinda guy. Has some good info from time to time. He has a HUGE following.

He was doing "Google Bombs". He would ask his followers to hammer google with search terms, that the MSM would not talk about. Jones would embaress Google with these search bombs.

Google eventaully changed the way their engine works. Now, when you go to Google and start typing, it trys to guess and fill in the search for you. However, if you start typing something it does not like, it won't fill in.

I suggest we do our own Google bomb. Everyone go to Google and type:

"second city cop blog and google"

Hit the button about A MILLION TIMES!

You won't get the blog, but Google will ge the message.

Tell your friends.

Long time lurker here. I'll concur with what others already agree upon: that Google did indeed remove the entry for Second City Cop. I visit at least weekly and ALWAYS get here by Googling "second city cop" (or "second city cop blog") ...

The only possible explanation for this being removed is Rahm Emmanuel's administration asked them to remove it. This guy is far worse than Daley when it comes to media cover ups.

The real issue here is if Rahm is having you removed from Google, will he also ask Google to shut down the blog itself, and remove the long history of reality as it actually happened, vs what the local media reports? (Blogger.com is owned by Google). Start backing everything up...now!

take off the paranoia hats, kids. There is no way *google* is doing daley's bidding or rahm's bidding or any of that. google *owns* blogger/blogspot, so if they wanted SCC down, it'd just be gone.

SCC, your best bet is to set up the blog in google's webmaster tools (https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/). You'll have to do something to prove you own the site (I chose the "drop a file on the site" method). Then you can see why it's not coming up. Also, make sure you don't have a robots.txt file on the site that is restricting access to the crawlers. google's crawler is better than others at following robots.txt, so it's possible that you inadvertently told it not to index the blog and it suddenly started following that.

One observation: lots and lots of the sites who link to you are just as right-leaning as you are. So if google wants to cleanse the internets of right-wing cop blogs, they're not doing a very good job of it. My understanding of how these search engine algorithms work is limited, but I do know they frequently adjust it, and as 12GA says above, if you didn't get the domain name, that could down-grade you.

And they are adjusting things in part because of pressure from the right. You think you have a google problem? At least you're not Rick Santorum.

Finding a link was important because the URL is not intuitive and I hadn't written it down or bookmarked it. Google would flash the results on the screen for a split second and then they would vanish and the page would be empty of results. By very fast mouse work I was finally able to click it before it went away. Later the problem cleared up.

"We have no idea why a $10 billion-a-year company that purports to deliver information to the masses would take it upon themselves to blacklist a site that pulls in maybe 15,000 hits a day on a good day..."

If they are doing this intentionally, it must be because SCC pulls no punches about the minute-by-minute reality of everyday life (and an excessive amount of death) on the streets and in the gangways and alleys of a real city, and is therefore proscribed as "racist" and Not Politically Correct.

Shows you how far left Google is -- even the Chicago Tribune lauds SCC as one of the best web sites in town, and their conglomerate very heavily censors its online comments sections and is really squeamish about even mentioning race in a description of a wanted criminal.

Want to see what Politically Correct means? Here is an example, right from Google. This business about SCC has nothing to do with Jews, I just present this to show how Google tries to deal with a "hot button" issue.

"If you recently used Google to search for the word “Jew,” you may have seen results that were very disturbing. We assure you that the views expressed by the sites in your results are not in any way endorsed by Google...

"So why is a search for “Jew” different? One reason is that the word “Jew” is often used in an anti-Semitic context..."

http://www.google.com/explanation.html

Oh, relax. There are lots of Jews who are NAMED "Ehud" or "Yehudi." That means "Jew," for G_d's sake. >pfft<

Now, I went to that link to get this point for us --

"Individual citizens and public interest groups do periodically urge us to remove particular links or otherwise adjust search results...Google reserves the right to address such requests individually...We will...remove pages from our results if we believe the page (or its site) violates our Webmaster Guidelines..."

Hmmmm...

I am no web genius, but I understand that search engines can be manipulated by web site operators to lift one web site up higher than another in the results. When you can't find a web site at all in over 400,000 results, though, something else might be going on.

Google's algorithm allows you to find what THEY want you to find. They tweak it fairly often so nobody can piggyback on a site, but if your blog isn't showing up immediately upon typing in second city cop (shouldn't even have to put "blog" at the end), then something's afoot.

Contact Google directly, explain your concerns and frustration that your site is being preempted, and see what happens.

If they're serious about bringing the world to everybody's fingertips, they should be able to fix it quickly. If nothing happens, then somebody is pulling some strings to ensure that you're not popping up right off the bat.

There is absolutely no reason your site shouldn't be front and center when you type in those search words, especially if you type them in order.

I don't get it. On, google, when I type in secondci - I don't even have to finish it - your site comes up at the top of the list.

And, when I type in second city cop bl - again, I don't have to finish it - second city cop blog comes up at the top of my list.

Check again, that is at the crux of the problem.

This site doesn't pop up, but Chicagoist and a couple of others do right away.

Hell, Shavedlongcock shows up third. If any site was to incur the wrath of google, I figure it would his.

Of course, maybe google has a stake in Folo's beef, who knows.

In my Yahoo search, a link to SCC was top of the list. On Google, you are nowhere to be found. No accident! "The powers that be" hate your blog.

SCC, there may be a time in the near future (national "emergency") when the Federal Government will take over the internet and cut you out completely, labeling you as anti-government and "subversive." The FBI has, in the recent past, already referred to Caucasian war veterans returning home as potential "right-wing terrorists"....after risking their lives to defend this country! To them, you and your blog are the same.

This Google black-out against SCC is only the beginning of what the elite can do. If Obama is re-elected, get ready for the economy to nose-dive completely, causing social chaos, a breakdown of order, and yes, even martial-law. Under martial-law, the internet will be taken over by the Federal Government (Obama's goons) "for our own good," in the interest of "homeland security."

WIFE OF MEXICAN DRUG LORD GIVES BIRTH IN CALIFORNIA

AP – 1 hr 53 mins ago

"LOS ANGELES (AP) — The young wife of Mexico's most wanted drug lord has given birth to twin girls at a hospital in northern Los Angeles County, according to a newspaper report.

"Emma Coronel, the 22-year-old wife of Joaquin Guzman, crossed the border in mid-July and delivered her daughters at Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster on Aug. 15, the Los Angeles Times reported on its website Monday (http://lat.ms/nyfqmn).

"Coronel, a former beauty queen who holds U.S. citizenship, returned to Mexico after they were born.

"Birth certificates listed Coronel as the mother of the girls, but the spaces for the father's name are blank. U.S. law enforcement officials, who tracked her movements even before she traveled to Lancaster, told the Times that Coronel was not arrested because there are no charges against her.

"Coronel is believed to be the third or fourth wife of Guzman, the 54-year-old multibillionaire head of Mexico's most powerful drug-trafficking gang, the Sinaloa cartel."

Dear Conspiracy Theorists:

It's Ben Bradley at Channel 7 writing. I checked with Google and a spokesperson promptly called me back after having their engineers look into it. She tells me that Mr. Second City Cop him/herself had a prviacy setting on the blog to keep it "invisible" and off the search results page. This didn't work for a long time because the blog was so often linked to; and therefore Google's results would still find the links and therefore the address.

However, in the last few days links dropped and it went "invisible" due to the setting.

The Google spokesperson said its engineers posted a comment on the board explaining how to fix the problem and make the site visible once again.

This post is just my little way of saying "thank you" for all of the information and entertainment over the years.

Noticed all the anti-coal-fired power plant posters on Chicago bus shelters lately? Just the tip of the iceberg. Obama and the enviros have a war going -- you know how they want you to get rid of your gasoline-powered lawn mower? Expect all radio communications to go out in a power outage, because they are even trying to eliminate emergency backup generators!

“Cross-state” air pollution regulations would force utilities in a few states to install billion-dollar retrofits on coal-fired power plants that EPA computer models say could (minimally) affect air quality hundreds of miles away. The EPA claims 20 states affect their downwind brethren during the May-through-September nitrogen oxide/ozone season but demands that Florida shoulder 79 percent of the responsibility nationwide. It also wants Florida to shoulder 94 percent of the responsibility for cleaning Houston’s air. The Texas city is located 800 miles away across the sultry, summertime Gulf of Mexico, and Florida utilities already have reduced their nitrogen oxide emissions by two-thirds since 2003. For its part, Texas must retrofit power plants that might affect Illinois communities 400 miles away.

"EPA’s “maximum achievable control technologies” (MACT) rules will impact power sources in factories and refineries. Its “reciprocating ignition compression engine” (RICE) rules will curtail the availability of thousands of backup, “peaking” and emergency generators at colleges, hospitals, malls, groceries and other facilities. When storms knock out power or heat waves strain overloaded grids, the dearth of electricity will cause brownouts, blackouts and widespread chaos.

"Coal-ash and water-quality rules will raise costs even further for nearly half of America’s power plants and electricity users."

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/sep/16/welcome-victory-in-long-regulatory-war/?page=all

No generators.

Hospitals? OEMC? You getting this?

Like the Greenpeace "activists" who were apparently allowed to get away with vandalizing the Com Ed plant here -- these people are all CRAZY.

Going to "clean things up" while forcing hundreds of millions more people in on top of us.

Right.

If it's not a techical issue due to the afore-mentioned configurations, I find it a pretty interesting coinky-dinky that it's happening after SCC is voted Best Blog. What, if anything, has changed with respect to the SCC & Google's technical configurations?

In regard to the post above that I cut and pasted above, if there are nefarious motives on Google's part (which I'm in clined to believe given Becky Chandlers post on her "Just A Girl In Short Shorts Talking About Whatever" concerning Google censoring), it's not about tripping-up loyal SCC followers. Scrubbing SCC search hits is about making it hard for newbies to find the blog.

In your browser, find "Tools - Clear Recent History," or whatever wipes clean the search history and "cookies" stored by your computer, and then try it again. Sounds like this might be an "auto-complete" from past searches you made. I think you can turn "auto-complete" off.
