Dig Deeper

As the revenue from red-light cameras continues to flatten and even decline, Rahm's looking to squeeze more money from drivers - or at least, car owners:
  • Bigger swathes of Chicago could wind up on video cameras under anti-speeding legislation that passed the Illinois Senate on Wednesday.

The proposal, which passed 32-24 and now moves to the House, is being sought by Mayor Rahm Emanuel to help nab speeders around city schools and parks. The measure applies only to Chicago.

“We have in Chicago a pedestrian fatality rate that’s 68 percent higher than in New York City, and we do lose a number of young children in these crashes in the city of Chicago,” said Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago), the bill’s chief Senate sponsor.

We'd really really like to see the statistical evidence for the speed cameras and the numbers floated around by politicians.

In a WBBM story, a reporter throws out this stat:
  • ...approximately 84 percent of all pedestrian accidents in Chicago happen within a quarter mile of parks and schools.
This covers something like 60% of the landmass of Chicago and just happens to be areas where kids congregate, so it's going to be skewed. This reminds us of the "within a 1,000 feet of school/church PCS charge that covers something like 80% of Chicago and makes it all but impossible to avoid enhanced charges in the city.

In the same story, they quote a doctor:
  • “We routinely see hundreds of kids a year hit by cars,” said Dr. Sally Reynolds, director of the emergency department at Children’s Memorial Hospital.

Sure you do - you're a hospital specializing in children. But Children's Memorial treats kids from the suburbs, downstate, and even out-of-state. Can we see the break down of Chicago kids treated who got hit in school zones? We're almost positive it will be a miniscule number. If we had hundreds of kids being struck by cars in school zones, we would have been redeployed there years ago and the headlines would have been screaming about the carnage in the streets. The media won't even cover the existing bloodbath in the minority communities of hundreds of gunfire deaths a year, but we're expected to believe hundred of kids are run over in school zones due to speeders?

Anyone want to bet the small number of kids hit by cars are as follows:
  • unattended children -
  • crossing away from designated crosswalks -
  • out of sight of crossing guards -
  • darting out from between parked vehicles -
  • or negligent parents running over kids while backing up
But Rahm needs his $100. It's all for the children you know.

"It's all for the children you know."

If you're not "for" the children, you must be "against" them, is how these idiots want to spin this.

If the tickets are only issued "on school days when children are present" (the only time the school speed limit is in effect), maybe it won't be so bad, but you know damn well this is a test bed and will soon be on other streets.

Most people don't realize that the speed limit on city streets is 30 mph, unless otherwise posted.

What the citizens supporting this measure don't realize is that it's the vehicle's owner that gets the ticket, not necessarily the speeder.

So when you lend Billy Bob the car and receive a ticket in the mail two months later, it's on you, not Billy Bob.

Even if you protest the ticket, you don't go before a real judge, you appear before some city-bought-and-paid-for "administrative law judge" or some such title.

This person isn't a judge at all but a city apparatchik who is on the city payroll and in whose best interest it is to find a majority liable (note that your "liable" and not "guilty") for these offenses.

So when you refuse to pay the ticket, Billy Bob's not getting his license suspended, you are.

Happy Motoring!

The speed cameras are coming. Welcome to the Communist, People's Republic of the City of Chicago. The only way to get around this is: BUDGET EXTRA TIME for any time you need to use your car to get around, and drive 2-3 miles UNDER the speed limit. That way, the cameras can't "get you." Change your driving habits to 27 mph (not in a school zone, otherwise, lower still), it will seem strange at first, life going in slow motion, but you WILL get used to it. If some antsy driver wants to tailgate you to get you to speed, let them hit you, then SUE the crap out of them.

Rahm needs to turn the Chicago City Budget from hundreds of millions of dollars in the red, into a surplus, in ONE TERM, so he can run for U.S. President in 2016. He will tell America, "I inherited a hudge fiscal crisis in Chicago in 2011, and performed miracles with my incredible genious, all in 4 short years...just IMAGINE what I can do to save America!" Rahm may very well be our NEXT PRESIDENT. May God help us!

As a suburban woman who drives Division, Chicago, and Augusta to/from Oak Park daytimes, I've witnessed numerous instances of pedestrians playing "chicken" with traffic - kids and adults delierately walking directly towards moving vehicles as if daring car to hit them. I don't see any speeders, probably because of high likelihood of random jay-walkers. Speed cameras aren't going to address this problem. These routes beat Eisenhower times, but require a degree of wariness.

Why is it that every Chicago intersection with red light cameras has it's yellow light set to the absolute IDOT minimum of 3 seconds, while everywhere else they are set to 5 seconds??? Why did the City reset those lights from 5 to 3 seconds? Could it be for safety, or for the cash they generate. The red light cameras have absolutely nothing to do with public safety and everything to do with generating income. If safety was the issue, they would be evenly distributed, but it seems they are disproportionately located in areas that are well to do or at least areas that well to do motorist are more likely to transit. Why is that? Because the City knows they aren't going to get dime one from some unlicensed undocumented driver or from the bottom feeding welfare leeches, but hang a red light ticket on some soccer mom and the cash flows in. It's total bullsh*t, just one more way to screw over those of us who pay. This city and the asshats that run it can suck it. 6 more years to retirement, and I'll be so far gone from this dump all you'll see is my ass as I fly through the redlight cameras...

I keep hearing the same message here about sticking together to vote. How many city employees skipped the mayor's election? A very high precentage of city employees ignored voting and who supported Rahm? The democrats. Teachers, fire and police union did not support Rahm and he won without them. We have no voting power.

--------------------------------------------The teachers union was the first in line to endorse twinkle toes tiny dancer. You do have a point with CPD and CFD though...

hey scc how about rahm make these cyclists start paying up. the city should make it mandatory for some form of registration to be affixed to the rear of the bicycle. these cyclists hardly adhere to the traffic code that us drivers have to abide by. i wonder if an idiot cyclist goes thru a red light and if the camera catches it, if the city sends the idiot cyclist a 100 dollar ticket. i highly doubt that

10/27/2011 06:41:00 PM

Actually, the city could generate a ton of $$$ by making those Critical Mass nutjobs fork over some cash for their insane rides.

Just when we thought Racoon Eyes revenue munchkins ran out of ideas on how to pick our pockets...guess what...they thought of a new one. Don't shovel your snow after a storm you get a TICKET. This one even caught me off guard. Now imagine this...78 year old Gustav doesn't want to get a ticket from the Dept. of Revenue Zombies so he goes out after a 7 inch snowfall at 11 pm. Gustav is from the Old School. Obey the laws, pay your taxes, and don't flush the toilet more than twice a day because he can't afford to pay the new fucking water rates. Gustav gets half way through shoveling and keels over with vapor lock on the old ticker. An hour later the Revenue Gremlin finds Gustav laying on the sidewalk so he gives him another ticket for blocking the sidewalk. What kind of Revenue Monster has been created by these selfish heartless greedy Bastards at City Hall. You won't be able to drive over 20 mph from 6am to 10pm on 50% of city streets. A gallon of water is going to cost more than a gallon of gas. You forgot to buy your doggie a license...You are getting a Ticket and Fido is going to County Jail. Your cab driver screaming about a Jihad in Chicago...He's pissed because he has to charge you another extra buck and he will probably get no tip. And tonight I see some of our cowardly Alderfools proposing giving drug offenders with small amounts of dope a....yes you guessed it...A FUCKING TICKET! Are Homicides next!

A lot of off duty cops are going to get dinged on this one. I wonder if the department will use it against on-duty cops??

Iwouldn't be surprised. Did you know that the CTA pays traffic tixs for it's drivers? It's in their contract.

Make sure you promptly pay any tickets you or anyone else gets in your personal car.

I happen to have the same last name as someone else in my small condo building. Common name and the other guy's unit is in a trust with only the last name evident. His water bill (less than $50) was about 60 days overdue so the city ran the name and address against a list of city employees and they decided I owned the unit because the last names and address matched up.

My captain raised hell and had to jump through hoops to prove I wasn't the owner of that unit and that the bill had been paid.

I told the other owner what was going on. He felt guilty and interceded on my behalf with the Revenue drones and they told him he had to give them a copy of his trust to prove I wasn't a beneficiary. He told them to stick it.

So if you think they aren't going to bust you for a speeding or red light ticket, you're dreaming.

Why is Rahm and McSpeed bump going to put speed camera's around schools and parks. Isn't that what the speed bumps that they put down years back do now, slow you down.It makes no sense(what does that these goofs do)to put up the cameras when every school and park is surrounded by speed bumps.Oh wait Rahm hasn't live here for several years so maybe McSpeedbump should inform him. Oh wait he never lived her. Hey how about LiL Tommy Byrne S&S man. Maybe he could yell up Rahm's ass and let him know about the bumps.Wake up you goofs.

First, I am totally against speed cameras whose validity can't be verified. This is all about generating revenue.

BUT, are you so unaware of your surroundings that you think all schools are bordered by side streets?

>Lasalle Magnet, Honore and DIVISION.
>Logandale, George and KEDZIE. >Nettlehorst, 3252 N. BROADWAY
>Stockton, Beacon and MONTROSE.
>Brunson, 932 N. CENTRAL

I don't, for a minute, believe these cameras are intended to 'save the children'. I don't think they are warranted. They will cause more accidents than they prevent. But, if you think all schools are on side streets, you either don't live or work in Chicago, or you're driving around in an oblivious bubble.

If nothing else, look around you at two pm at the intersections of Addison and Milwaukee, Addison and California, Addison and Western, Division and Western, Ashland and Irving Park. All of these schools are located at major intersections. Stop texting and look around you.

If the politicians were serious about wanting Chicago drivers to just 'slow down', which is what they publicly maintain, they should simply lower the speed limit to 25mph.

Instead of going 33-35 in a 30mph zone, people would be driving 28-30 in a 25mph zone. Voila! Problem resolved. But, drat - no extra income for the city.

The state law allowing chicago to put up speeding cameras ( law only applies to chicago, not the rest of the state) will have the cameras operating from 7 am to 10 pm 365 days a year, even when school is not in session. Look out!

"Why is this camera legislation ONLY for Chicago?"

Because we need "special" laws to cover the city; laws requiring city employees live within the confines (emphasis on CONFINES) of the city, laws that put the mayor in charge of appointing the pension boards, laws that specifically allow revenue cameras, etc.

Our crooked politicians can't be expected to do it all alone, can they??

Now that speed cameras are okay, will they finally remove all of the useless stop signs, circle jerks and pointless stoplights??

During my 18 mile commute to work, I'm averaging 17-18 mph during rush hour. No wonder it takes me an hour to get to work. That's ridiculous!

There are too many stop signs and traffic lights that need to flash yellow (during nighttime hours). It's little wonder that so many people ignore these stop signs.

One of Rahms arguments is that x% of accidents involve speeding-obvious proof that people are participating in civil disobedience! They're voting against these superfluous stop signs and traffic lights by voting with their right foot, and putting the pedal to the metal!

Wow the people of Chicago are real IDIOTS! You need to speak up NOW before this law gets passed and is implemented!People hate the police, so in their eyes this is a slap in our face. But this law will come back to bite them in the ass. See a police officer can show some compasion to the single mother with three kids, the mom running late to pick up the kid from school, rushing a loved one to the emergency room, and the many workers to drive for a living when they are caught speeding 6 mph the posted speed limit. But these cameras will not give a shit with the excuse you have for speeding and demand $100 per violation. With these cameras covering 48% of the city it will easy to assume some people will and can get caught 3 times a day,at $100 a piece, even a mid income family can face hardship will their monthly bills. Can you imagine a low income family, they wont be able to pay their bills or have their cars booted/impounded for payment? The city wants them installed near parks, guess what is on both sides of LSD? Miles and miles of park land, so expect these cameras on LSD $$$$$$$$$$!!!! These alderman should be opposing these cameras and fighting for low income people and businesses doing buisness in chicago, this law will do more harm than good! Call your alderman and demand they vote no to speed cameras in chicago. Dont let rham do a daley mistake like the parking meters!

They've had this garbage for years over in Europe. The locals hate them and destroy them often. A tire soaked in gas does a 100% job in completely destroying the camera and easily fits over the mounting.
