More Mass Arrests

Good and bad things at Saturday's downtown arrests. A couple of good things gleaned from e-mails, comments and observations:
  • Mass arrest kits seemed to be in plentiful supply;
  • Sheriff buses on scene instead of using CTA buses;
  • Holding those who were in violation of their Bail Bond restrictions from last week.
There was still a lot to be desired though:
  • Again, why are we waiting until 0100 AM to arrest people? The park closes at what? 1100? One announcement and then arrests. Pretty straightforward, it sends the message we mean business, and establishes precedent for future events like G-8 and NATO.
  • Provide the protesters with an out - an "escape route." Once we start arresting people, the people wavering will realize they really don't want to spend a night in jail and they'll leave. This frees up manpower for the dedicated protesters and empties the park anyway. Rahm obviously doesn't want arrests because then he becomes the focal point. We ended up doing 40 fewer arrests this time. Anyone want to bet there's even less next week?
  • One working printer in 001? For processing 130 arrests? Of this doesn't say worlds about the state of this Department, we don't know what does. How about either getting us the equipment we need or going to a truly paperless Department as we were promised 20 years ago?
And this last point is just insane. We didn't witness this, but it appeared a few times in the comment sections:
  • Wow! What a clusterfuck here at Grant Park. The Gold Stars decided to start arresting protesters at 0100 hrs after warning them at 2300 hrs. Then two Stars Stars were approaching the protesters, one at a time and politely asked them if they were sure that they wanted to go to jail. Then 2 PO's locked them up, escorted them by a Cook County prisoner bus, where they waited in line for 15-20 minutes! It has been 3 hours and they are still making arrest! There were less then 100 people! These bosses are so fucked up, it's ridiculous! This is totally humiliating and shameful, we are in trouble come May with these brainiacs!
Just a thought, but that isn't going to work in May 2012. We don't have nearly enough Deputy Chiefs or Assistant Superintendents or whatever they're called now to ask every single rioter if they wish to be arrested while the protesters are busy burning garbage cans, breaking windows and flipping over cars.

Its true about the printers in 001. The one in lock up has been broken for over a year now. On top of that, half of the computers are broken. On the upside though they are fixing the crumbling walls in the WC's office. That's to be expected though in such an old building....

I say we should get the word out that we, the police, are not going to do shit to the protesters unless they throw shit at us. That goes double for G8. The city doesn't give a shit about property crimes, so let them break windows, loot, whatever.

Let anarchy rule! It's what the libtards want, and you won't spend the next 2 years meeting with the corp counsel and then being sued civilly or smacked with punitive damages.

These clowns should be charged with Criminal Trespass To Land (state charge) ,instead of the city ordinace. Then when these slackers get arrested again, for playing games in the park there would be a conditions of bail bond charge added. I would imagine sitting in a bullpen at county jail with the best dregs of society Cook County has to offer would stop these idiots from wasting police resources. Then when the good old G-8 arrives in May, the department should get in touch with the CCSAO and discuss charging any anachists with FELONY mob action ,if appropriate. Again these college aged kids would probably shit their pants when they arrive in the receiving room of Cook County Jail. Time to stop playing games with these people. We are the police ,right???

The new Starz TV series 1st episode was great. I look forward to seeing more!

Kelsey Grammer plays Chicago 'Boss' on TV

"In the series, Kane rallies against his opponents while battling a degenerative neurological condition that he is trying to keep from hitting the headlines.

"We meet a man who's basically king," the actor said. "He's been elected king but he looks at Chicago as his ... property, basically, and the people of Chicago as his subjects but also, he has a loving, caretaker nature about it. But he is willing to hold onto power by any means necessary. He is given some very bad news right up front in the show and suddenly his legacy has a time limit on it."

Um, so you elected to be arrested along with a huge amount of other people and you expected to go to a country club, be fed your choice of filet or perhaps a lovely salmon, you know better than the bondsmen (we don't have any of those, by the way) what their job requires and you expected your release to be expedited according to your timetable, not the system's.

Welcome to the real world. It's a bitch, isn't it.

And tell the epileptic girl we aren't physicians and aren't allowed to administer medication or to hand it over to you. If she wants to voluntarily get herself arrested, she should think of the implications of her actions before she does so.

The only way someone gets meds is to be hauled to the hospital to be seen by a medical practitioner, which becomes logistically difficult, if not impossible, in a mass arrest situation.

Once they wait in the hospital until hospital staff can see them, only then is it determined IF she gets meds, WHAT meds she gets and WHEN she gets them. And then she goes back to lockup. And the next time she's due for meds, she goes through the same process again. And then she goes back to the lockup. But, that was her choice, and if she chooses to do so again, she will face the same reality.

New York cops defy order to arrest hundreds of ‘Occupy Albany’ protesters

Occupy Albany protesters in New York’s capital city received an unexpected ally over the week: The state and local authorities.

According to the Albany Times Union, New York state troopers and Albany police did not adhere to a curfew crackdown on protesters urged by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) and Albany mayor Gerald Jennings.

Mass arrests seemed to be in the cards once Jennings directed officers to enforce the curfew on roughly 700 protesters occupying the city owned park. But as state police joined the local cops, protesters moved past the property line dividing city and state land.

With protesters acting peacefully, local and state police agreed that low level arrests could cause a riot, so they decided instead to defy Cuomo and Jennings.

“We don’t have those resources, and these people were not causing trouble,” a state official said. “The bottom line is the police know policing, not the governor and not the mayor.”

How about Rahm swallowing his pride and accepting the fact that these are peaceful US CITIZENS protestors that are exercising their rights to free speech and assemble as guaranteed under the US CONSTITUTION.

It is no different that our rights to bear firearms.

Given the cities financial situation it's the prudent thing to do. The taxpayers should not pay for this silliness to boost someones ego.

State and local police in Albany, New York are siding with the protesters and against the Dem Gov. Cuomo trying to shut them down.

At the Capitol, in anticipation of possibly dozens of arrests, a State Police civil disturbance unit was quietly activated, according to officials briefed on the matter but not authorized to comment publicly. But as the curfew neared, the group of protesters estimated at several hundred moved across an invisible line in the park from state land onto city property.

"We were ready to make arrests if needed, but these people complied with our orders," a State Police official said. However, he added that State Police supported the defiant posture of Albany police leaders to hold off making arrests for the low-level offense of trespassing, in part because of concern it could incite a riot or draw thousands of protesters in a backlash that could endanger police and the public.

"We don't have those resources, and these people were not causing trouble," the official said. "The bottom line is the police know policing, not the governor and not the mayor."

The new nice police. And its the way society wants it. Little Johnny didn't mean to harm anyone. So why are you police being so mean?

Or it's OK to be here illegally. Or we know you need to be "helped" not jailed.

This is what happens when society goes "soft" on crime...and doesn't back the police actions.

Police stop arresting. Judges and juries don't convict. Prosecutors won't prosecute. And the media and politicians and leaders voice their "opinions" on things they don't know about. It's a damn shame.

there was no way chicago could have locked up 2000 of them.

ergo the strength in numbers was given up.

Dysfunctional.

Arbitrary.

Capricious.

Crazy.
